Honestly, I think I pushed that a tad far. I should have said you "invited the comparison," but you definitely have a rather extreme style of rhetoric. Mind you, I'm not "calling you out on it," but glass houses and all that.

RE the article. I simply don't see quite what you're seeing. It looks to me more like a description of a volatile situation.

I think also there are things that are harped on too much, and there are other important things are not said at all. It's certainly not a "great" article, but I don't believe that the failing is one of malice, rather one of eloquence and subtlety.

What should have been said plainly is that is it a description of a volatile situation. It also should have gone into the terrible real estate practices in the US that created the ghettos. They used maps that real estate brokers had to follow, forbidding them to sell houses to non-whites. This continued officially through the 90's in some places, and continues still in unofficial ways. It was especially bad in Baltimore where I live. Check this out: https://www.pbs.org/independentlens/films/rat-film/

I think you'll like the movie either way, it follows rat hunting in baltimore (and rat fishing).

This link might be better out of the US https://memory.is/rat-film

Also, it has a Dan Deacon soundtrack, which is killer.

Well, you mentioned a few posts up being squeamish re: human horror.
Yeah, I'm not into it. My parents love to watch dark shit like that on TV, but it gives me nightmares. I can watch horror movies or anything that isn't real, but I get freaked out by the real stuff, especially when it's dramatized. I know lot's of people love that stuff though. I have friends who like the surgery channel.

I can't tell though if you're just posting that to tease me, or you're just trying to make a point? I guess I get what you're saying, but I don't think you can say it's the same thing. I think everyone is capable of terrible shit given the right circumstances though. History is filled with examples.

fyi that English schoolteacher has been suspended or fired I think.

An RE teacher, right? Well... that whole experience has given any of his perceptive students the best lesson on religion one could hope to impart.

Oh no, I don't think she's being wilfully malicious, either. I think her response is gravely mistaken, and potentially very dangerous - to her own community above all - but malicious, no. (what happens when one of these kids' disciplinary records gets brought up, denying them opportunities years down the line? and surely productive adulthood will force them to engage with other racial "presences" constantly? even in the most amoral, pragmatic terms, what she describes, sans any inkling of a solution, is a recipe for failure at best)

By total coincidence, I've been reading up on the Station Nightclub fire of 2003 (interesting breakdown). The matrix of failure behind that thing is staggering - it goes way beyond the "dumbass rockers use pyro in a tiny club" I'd assumed. But you won't find one iota of malice, just people who thought they'd found easy solutions to wickedly unforgiving problems.

Thanks, I'll give it a watch. It's a horrendous situation you have in the US, I'll never deny that. As I say, I'm sorry if I come off as absolutist here.

I've never enjoyed the slasher/giallo/torture porn subgenres of horror, tbh. Phantasmagoria I dig, things that can't exist in reality. Pseudo-snuff just makes me want to read case reports, or history books, or medical treatises. At least their mundanity is useful.

(another total coincidence, Berberian Sound Studio is an interesting film about this intersection. film about a film, the hellaciously cruel fictional giallo THE EQUESTRIAN VORTEX - and yet not)

Nope, no ulterior motives on my part. I grew up with stories of the Eastern Front, and reports on the Rwandan genocide and Yugoslav wars. Talk of "the abyss" and the ubiquitous "How could it have come to this" made me wonder how, indeed. Christopher Browning's "Ordinary Men" is a good clinical breakdown I was pointed to early on. It always starts with target designation, and rationalisation - sometimes very oblique, even apologetic. Whatever the perpetrator's indiscretion, the victim cannot be blameless, because their kind did something to you and yours. This most definitely includes offending you with their "presence."

So I can't help seeing a glaring red flag in that response. History is exactly why. If it were arguing for a majority population, I'd call it unconscionable. Arguing for an outnumbered, impoverished, systemically disadvantaged one? Still unacceptable, but moreover, pitiably foolish and self-sabotaging.

Personally, I grew up with some real damage cases - broken homes, dirt poor, mad as hell and navigating adolescence - who managed to turn themselves around by graduation, and it was by rejecting such mindsets. I saw other, less disadvantaged kids buy into nihilism, and spiral off into disaster. A decade ago I'd have been shocked to see this in a mainstream American publication, but at this point it seems to be some unfortunate zeitgeist. I hope not too many are falling for it. As bad as things are in US ghettos, this is how to keep it that way and worse.

Suspended and under police guard, AFAIK. Going to give our government the benefit of the doubt, and assume it's to head off "anything silly" (as the lovely "Should I slay or should I go" chap on TalkyBollocks referred to Patyfication), but I guess we'll see.

I swear to Jesus I didn't write "head off" deliberately, but I'm leaving it motherfucker. 3;

I'm not sure my RE teacher quite had the energy to show controversial drawings as part of their curriculum.

The most I remember from RE was being taught about 3 religions (Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism), an assignment where we had to design our own religion (including making our own model houses of worship, seriously) and an entire class spent watching and discussing that episode of the Simpsons where Bart sells his soul.

I think selling your soul for some Alf pogs is a pretty good trade.

Not for Urkel pogs, though.

Female movie reviewer/analyzer/youtuber Lindsay Ellis has released a video addressing her recent cancellation from the left, a sequel to her XOXO talk on her cancellation by the alt-right, and the ugly willingness by the dum-dum portion of the online left to join forces with the alt-right for clout.

The very same kind of "bipartisan" clout they sneer at liberals for chasing.

Ah, Hotdog-chan. She kinda dumb, but so cute. And even with her sometimes addled aim, taking a three-pointer at this particular gaping arsehole of Western culture ensures nothin' but net! Image "The Beast," hmm. I prefer to think of it as a machine. "Beast" implies fur, fat and feelings, perhaps some tenuous concept of loyalty. What society is dealing with (and in many cases celebrating) is more accurately likened to an unattended woodchipper.

TBF, it's a fairly recent (though veddy British) phenomenon, the mainstream embrace of "Well of course Mick had to saw Ms. Twanky's head off with a Stanley knife - she drew an offensive cartoon!"

Even the most articulate prof would've been laughed out of the staff room, had he claimed this shit would be entertained one day. 3;

I remember being taught about the Salman Rushdie fiasco at the time, but back then it wasn't really considered acceptable, let alone moral to butcher people in cold blood because they dissed your favourite superhero.

re: Lindsay I recommend ignoring all the angry graffiti wall stuff and listening to her essay on the film Bright instead. At the very least, it includes the 80's kid friendly hip hop promotional movie song that Will Smith so meanly denied us. (Where's the song for I Am Legend, Will? Huh?!?!?! I've been waiting twenty years!!!)

I think that's the problem with a lot of nerds when it comes to wrestling drama: it's not about a rational weighing of sins or whatever, it's about who's likable. If you're not putting forward what's likable about your guy, you're not even participating in the game.

I liked my brain better when I was happily oblivious of Bright. What the fuck. :[ That wasn't very Big Willy Style, the way that fairy crumpled and died with its legs splayed out as Will Smith bludgeoned it with his broom! Maybe that was the point of the scene? But the movie apparently ends in "LMAO BIG WILLY STYLE MIRITE" mode, which made me grimace while mowing down thousands of Virtual Communists in my super patriotic videogame.

Seems to end that way, anyhow. I don't watch this lame shit. That's Hotdog's job. Image

Speaking of things, RE: Hotdog's avowed commitment to "shamelessness" - she has it backwards. Shameless would be the transparently cynical actors she spends the video (understandably) railing at. Shame's a useful thing to have, in moderation. If someone's trying to turn it against you, the solution isn't to abandon it but to tell them to fuck off.

...I'm trying to imagine a scenario where someone attempts to stoke anti-Asian hatred by pointing out the Disney dragon movie is a bit cookie-cutter, and all I'm getting is my concept art for Rice Buster 2: Revenge Uncle Ben's Brother, which now that I look back, was pretty insensitive. TO UNCLE BEN

Trigger warning: upscaling
Spoiler: show

I knew that article was old as fuck - they posted that three years ago.

Spin always annoys the shit out of me, much worse than calling someone an asshole or whatever. It's a massive insult against one's intelligence and autonomy. They use the line "400 rockets" (now ~800?) because it sounds way scarier than "three people died." Or what someone living in Afghanistan would consider a calm, sunny day.

The retaliation will have thousands and thousands of munitions and missiles fired, but we don't mention those in as spoooOooOooky and angry tones because reasons.

What does Spin have anything to do with it?

AFAI can tell, they are not owned by or own the onion or any of the parent companies or vice versa.

I understand the concept. I thought you were talking about Spin Magazine.

I also don't often hear people use the word spin in that context much anymore. It was big in the 90's, but it kind of fell out of usage (in my experience).

For reference, I actually specifically went to school to study media, but I didn't have the stomach for it. Many of my fellow students in grad school went onto careers as spin doctors and media commentators. I just went into media management and sound design (and then abandoned that entirely but that's another story).

So I agree with you. It creeps me the hell out. Sufficiently competent misdirection is functionally equivalent to lying. It's dishonest at best and people should be held more accountable for their lies.

The muddying of the term 'antisemitism' around the gaza issue is one of the most intellectually cynical and infuriating things about the news and just, generally.

It's such a hot button topic- we'll reach the stage where no one with an ounce of self-preservation will say anything, and leave all the discourse to nutjobs.
One can probably apply that statement to many things.

If nothing else, it's not particularly useful to frame things as L and R. You will just end up trying to force your argument into a box.
That's just us "bottoms" (as Bryan says) arguing over whether L or R got hurt more because of it and that's pretty much meaningless.

It's just a bunch of soap opera Jersey Shore BS designed to keep us occupied so we don't complain about the minimum wage and stuff.

The left's own medicine? The right were the original inventors of "cancel culture", and they've never stopped doing what they've always done. The only difference now is that their numbers have dwindled considerably over the decades (and for good reason), so we don't hear about it quite as often as before.

These two stories I linked recently aren't the very first time a leftist has ever been fired from their job and blacklisted by a right-wing hate mob, they're just two of the most recent stories that I posted here on a whim.

Sit at my knee, child, and let me tell you the tale of a man named Joseph McCarthy.
