Lord of War
One of the few movies the Nicolas Cage has done that he actually acts well in. A gun runner from the 80s to the early 2000s. Jared Leto is also good in this as well shockingly enough.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) - Peter Yates

A fine film with a great cast. Robert Mitchum at his absolute best.
Compared to other 70's crime films, say Dirty Harry (1971) with Eastwood's caricature of a tough guy, Mitchum, in The Friends of Eddie Coyle, is the real deal. Dark and gritty.
Highly recommended.

Atomic Blonde

A spy story set in Berlin during the last days of the Wall, with a particular abundance of traitors and double agents. The highly regarded Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is sent by the MI6 to deal with a particularly improbable instance of a traditional MacGuffin, a list of spies that must be recovered at all costs before it falls in the wrong hands, and more sound instances of two traditional problem characters, an untrustworthy and somewhat rogue colleague and a major traitor to find and capture. The three issues are of course related.

There are some difficulties with the plot: what are the KGB agents doing, and more importantly why? On a similar note, why are the CIA, represented only by a brief appearance of John Goodman and by SPOILER, the other NATO powers, and East Germany so uninvolved? Why is everyone at MI6 allergic to oversight and mission control, allowing Broughton to offer important news to her superiors in a debriefing that strongly reminds the viewer of The Usual Suspects?
Atmosphere and action scenes are evidently the top priority, and most fights and car chases fall between very good and impressive.

Entertaining, but the most serious and important theme it deals with is the importance of determined brutality and brave risk-taking when one has to kill people with improvised weapons.

Trainspotting 2:

The film does very well and describes the lives of Renton, Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie 20 years after Renton ditched his friends and ran away with the stolen drug money. If you watched the first film when it initially came out, you'll appreciate how the characters have changed with the times in this one. It's part "walking down memory lane" and one part "new scam". Those that have read the book "Porno" will see some similarities, but the film stands out on its own.

Choke (2008) - you can keep Fight Club, but not even off-screen narration was enough to ruin Choke for me. Found it strongly reminiscent of Nailed (2001 - the one starring Harvey Keitel), meaning - off-screen voice job and some straight-to-DVD faces in an otherwise competently put together feature film. Its ultimate saving grace, I think, is that the majority of cast (and - perhaps - the rest of the film crew) enjoyed working on it, which is not a thing money can buy. Not bad for one's directorial debut.

Pink Panther - I have seen this before, but barely remembered anything from it. Much of the stuff I thought was from this movie was actually from Return of Pink Panther. It's very different from the later movies with less focus on slapstick humor, but still a very nice movie. Clouseau is lacking is usual accent and Cato and Dreyfus are nowhere to be seen. Humor is more subtle, but still very much present. David Niven and Robert Wagner are also very enjoyable.

A Shot in the Dark - This is where more of what the Pink Panther series is known for is introduced. Clouseau's accent, Cato, and Dreyfus are all present and made good use of. The movie also makes excellent use of a nudist colony without going into R rated territory. Laugh out loud funny.

The Boss Baby: ☆☆☆1/2

This movie exceeded the low expectations I had for it going in. In spite of a plot that by all accounts should be a formula for an absolute trainwreck of a film (in particular I suspect Illumination would butcher something like this horribly), DreamWorks Animation seems to have a unique ability to take these kind of mediocre plots and actually make something halfway decent out of them. It's clear from early on that the animators had a lot of fun with making this one, and they crammed in a lot of references to other films (both subtle and obvious) along the way. It's no masterpiece, but it's better than you might expect.

I caught up and watched Lifeforce while I was away on vacation. You know, something to do on a rainy night!

Lifeforce. I don't know why Cannon Films thought it would be worth it to spend ~$40 million on a movie about a naked space vampire chick sucking people to death, but I can say the world is a better place for having so much money and talent poured into such a stupid, stupid idea. Thank you Tobe Hooper. Thank you Frank Finlay and Patrick Stewart for trying to take this seriously. And thank you Mathilda May, for flaunting your naked body across so much of the 2-hour run time.

Great special effects, too. This movie was definitely not boring.

Police Story 2

Better writing, right pacing, has more suspense and balanced humor. Which I have complained in the first film as too many filler and misplaced jokes. Fight scenes are fun but not as brutal as the first film.

The Glen Gary Glenn Ross joke was clearly aimed at the parents... I found it quite clever.

Which version did you watch? The uncut has too much detective stuff in it that thankfully isn't in the more widely released version.

Shin Godzilla really has captured the feel of the original 1954 movie. As expected from the creator of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise.

I loved it in the 1954 film when the American Japanese girl that can't string an English sentence together popped up and asked where the closest Zara was. I think it's more accurate to say it has captured the feel of current day Japanese cinema, which I also capture in my toilet most mornings after a nice coffee.

I just watched 4 of the Hell Raiser films from earliest on up. This was my first time watching them as suprising as that sounds. Ive seen quite a few of the older horror movies. Definitely different and enjoyable. I think the 1st one is my favorite closely followed by 2 then the others are a toss up.

I have never seen a Godzilla movie from start to finish. Which would you recommend and why?
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

The first one (Japanese version, 1954) is a great movie, and probably the only "great" Godzilla. Most others are varying shades of fun, though there are some very low points. From the ones I have seen, I have enjoyed these the most:

Godzilla (aka Gojira)
Godzilla vs. Mothra (original and remake; original is a little bit better)
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla

The first is rightly regarded as a classic, and probably the only "meaningful" Godzilla movie. Good characters and imagery. It's actually quite a downer movie. After that, it more or less devolves into monster mash silliness, but these have their own charm. Vs. Mothra is a fun, goofy movie that combines a lot of 60s silliness into a fun adventure, with fairies, sleazy executives, environmentalism, and monster fights. Vs. Mechagodzilla is probably the best of the silly monster movies, with lots of fights, monsters, and a plot so insane that it is quite enjoyable.

Godzilla 1984
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla vs. Destroyah

Godzilla 1984 is a good reboot, imo, that brings the monster back to its roots. The attempt at Cold War commentary falls a little flat, but it is an enjoyable backdrop to the rampage. Godzilla is restored to a mean-spirited asshole, which he will remain throughout the 80s revival series. King Ghidorah is where they just stopped giving a shit and started going as bonkers as possible. It is incredibly fun. There are space people from the future, time travel, monsters, cyborgs, and all sorts of wacky shit that makes you laugh the entire way. It is incredibly entertaining and probably my favorite of the revival. Vs. Destoroyah is an awesome cataclysmic finish of the whole series, with a multi-phased monster that is pure heavy metal in terms of devilish looks and asshole-behavior. It also manages to have a more exciting human plot thanks to the juvenile form of the monster which is as big as a person (plus the requisite "send the military to deal with the monsters" stuff).

In terms of similar movies, the 90s Gamera trilogy is also highly recommended. A better "story" than most of the Godzilla movies, and does a good job of following and building off itself through three movies.

Pet Sematary (1989)
Rather cheesy, but horrifying at the end. The effects, i mean.
Doc went full retard at the end, too, even with the poor ghost warning him.

Not to be too cliched, but the book is so much better - absolutely none of the movie's bizarre attempts at levity, just black despair and the release of oblivion. I wonder if they were trying to rein it in? King himself found the book a bit much IIRC. The movie also glosses over the second trip to "the real cemetary," it's formidably scary on page.

Is there any movie that is better than the source material? Visual candy aside, of course.

It usually seems as if a Stephen King movie will be better than a Stephen King novel (with some notable exceptions, like The Dark Tower). Carrie, The Shining, Misery, Creepshow, and of course... The Running Man!

Some of those are opinions of course. Except for Carrie, The Shining, and... The Running Man!
