Reasons for a physical collector to own a JP PS1

Post by o.pwuaioc »

I know the title sounds weird, but I'm trying to exclude digital games from factoring in here (so no PSN).

I have a region-modded PS1 and three games for it: Shienryu (JP), Gradius Gaiden, and Raiden Project. The only real reason I've held onto it for so long is to play Gradius Gaiden (though Raiden Project is a bonus; longboxes are a pain), as I also own Shienryu on the Saturn, so lately I've considered dumping it. Is there a reason to keep it? Are there enough games to fill up the library that make it worth having? I can think of one more JP-only game I want—In the Hunt, which is supposed to be much better on the PS1 than the Saturn—but I'm not sure 3 games are enough to keep it, especially since technically In the Hunt was released on the Saturn.

Besides DonPachi/DoDonPachi, what action games (so those that require no Japanese language knowledge) would be worth considering before deciding to sell a JP PS1? (Also, is Saturn In the Hunt really that bad?)

I bring up JP PS1 games in particular, because I also have a US PS2, and my goal is to have less, not more, so I don't really want to buy a JP PS2 just to play JP PS1 games.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't let go a modded and working Jap PS1 at this point but the truth is that with your US PS2 you could play your PS1 games if you don't mind venturing deep into hack land (keyword: mechapwn).

There're many PS1 action games worth playing - it complements the Saturn quite well, and it even has some essential titles you won't find on any other system. The problem is that they're super expensive now, so again, hack land might be your answer. Check Gunners Heaven, Little Ralph, R-Type Delta, Raystorm, Harmful Park, Gussun Paradise, Namco Anthology 2, G Gundam The Battle & Gundam W The Battle, the Rockman X's, Panzer Bandit. Many, many more if you're open to silly or weird stuff, but I'll stop.

Edit -
Gradius Gaiden is one of those few not running properly on PS2. One more reason to keep your console, though that was already known, right?

If your a collector of videogames that are opened.

Thats as simple as it gets.

Or you could get a ps2 and be able to play more games like above. Or you can modchip an existing ps1/ps2.

PS1 emulation is 100% and from what I've seen on youtube a PS1 mini can be made to play every single game in existance.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

There's a few reasons to keep a JPN PS1 around if you're a physical game collector. Sure you can get some of these on other platforms. As a whole; and considering the peripherals some of these games employ, and the color manuals, Playstation came from behind to become one of my favorite platforms to collect for.

Re: Reasons for a physical collector to own a JP PS1

Post by BareKnuckleRoo »

This topic is highly relevant to my interests. I have a US PS2 with a modchip so I could import and play a number of Japanese PS2 games (the "Tales of" PS2 exclusives, Hokuto no Ken, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, etc, thanks Play-Asia <3).

I also recently purchased a copy of Wizardry Llylgamyn Saga, the collection of the first three games for PS1 JP that has English language in the options, making it fully playable in English aside from the bestiary and item collection list. Didn't do my research and was very unpleasantly surprised to discover a modded PS2 can't play PS1 JP game discs. Even more annoyingly, while my modded PS2 won't let me play legitimate copies of PS1 JP games (US ones work fine), if I dump the game and and burn it to a blank CD-R, it'll play just fine. :/

So yeah, if you want to be able to play your actual copies of games, there's plenty of worthwhile JP imports to play. If you own a modchipped PS2 for the sake of being able to play legitimately owned import copies, the only work around is to reburn a CD-R for each one which is extremely annoying, but is a workaround if you're short on space and want to only have one console taking up space...

PS2 doesn't play PS1 games exactly the same as a real PS1, despite the constant claims it's 100% backwards compatible.

Example: Play Strikers 1945 II on PS1 vs PS2, the PS2 removes all of the slowdown in stage 7. This is all on real hardware btw. Also there are bugs in games like Gradius Gaiden when played on certain PS2 models.

I always play PS1 games on a real PS1, never on a PS2. Also it's way, way fucking easier to mod a PS1 to play imports, etc than it is a PS2.

Right, there are a lot more PS1 played on PS2 issues than are documented.

Any favorites in that list? I tend to be a bit pickier that most with my games, limited time and all. And my general trend is fewer but better, not more and mediocre. Zanac X Zanac of course is on my list. I tend to forget about it, because it's price is hardly worth justifying!

You mean issues, right?

I thought you don't played MAME? But point taken.

I suppose I'll keep this console then, although I'd love to see a full compatibility list. Strikers II I own on the Saturn, so I'm not concerned about that, but Gradius Gaiden is a bit more concerning.

I'm not always worried about 100% fidelity, but if it makes the experience worse, than that's a problem.

I knew Free McBoot didn't allow JP games, didn't realize the same was true for chipped PS2s.

Between this and the issues with Gradius Gaiden, I guess I'll stick with the PS1 for now, although if it's only really GG that has problems (of the games I own/want to own), giving it up for a chipped PS2 isn't odious to me.

As mentioned earlier, you might be able to softmod your NTSC-U PS2 via MechaPwn to play NTSC-J imports:
On SCPH-500xx and SCPH-700xx:
NTSC-U and ASIA (non NTSC-J) consoles: BOOT PS1 disc originals from all regions

On SCPH-7500X and later models (also known as Deckard consoles):
BOOT PS1 disc originals from all regions
I would recommend everyone to stay away from PS2 modchips at this point.

Just how bad is the slowdown in Gradius Gaiden on the PS2? Is it Gradius III level stuttering that just makes it easier, or does it completely ruin the experience?
