I love these. It's always the music for me. I love these old art styles too.

Cool thread

ImageImageSEAR-CHIN 4 ROOOVEImageImage Trap Gunner aka Trap Runner, a seriously underloved game. Plays like a head-to-head update of SEGA's Crack Down (a title the emcee growls to kick off each match ), running on MGS1's engine. Badass tactical topdown VS action with lovable style, as expected of Racdym. Memorable even in the VS CPU story mode.

Clicked with this one in mind Image Vivid powerhouse energy, more than worthy of the landmark game itself. BGM easily worthy of SNK's Arrange Sound Trax series - actually, it wouldn't surprise me if they handled it in-house. Fun fact, the NTSCU Dreamcast version edited King's spot due to the presence of... ARUCOHOR :o The Devil's Pepsi, being all but chucked down the throats of the impressionable yoof!

EDIT: You, too, timestamped ahead of the company logos (`w´メ) I thought I'd mistakenly clicked my own link! I rove you, you know that? (;`w´;)

Im so glad I made this thread. The Evil Zone one reminds me of Tenchi and Slayers. I used to watch those with my cousins as a kid when I would visit them for holidays.

God damn! How'd I forget GHOST IN THE SHELL (PS1). Not just the intro - it's got lots of Oshii-calibre goodies scattered throughout. Another genuinely excellent game, too - expertly consolised arcadey 3D tank action, with classic lockon/vulcan blasting and a killer antigrav climbing mechanic. OST is god calibre through and through.

For sure. Once we got into the 00s the loli/moe boom happened and things started going kinda pedo and all those teenage girls suddenly started looking 6 years old. And all those teenage boys who looked 24 suddenly looked 12. The best was probably that late 80s/early 90s era.

My next console purchase this holiday is probably going to be a PC Engine, which is a treasure trove of that stuff. (And/or getting a Dreamcast back, wish I'd never sold mine back in the day).

The homogenous, squeaky clean, figurine bait of today gets on my nerves.
And I can't fault them for moving on, but I used to really adore lighting and glimmer effects of that era. Or how they'd partially cloak a character in shadow. There was always something so gorgeous and deliberate with really good mood.

Anyway...

Were there any space/aircraft focused FMV's from any STG's of that time?

The bit near the middle where Iori takes a punch and then just kinda pauses the fight to yell into the air always cracked me up; I always picture him whining "Heeeey! No faaaair! That's cheeeating!"

Iori was on Extra mode for those Red HP SDMs

Might be fun to edit a couple cuts that are nothing but Iori or Kyo getting their asses beat throughout the whole intro.

Basically the anime version of this. Image

I kind of hate how Falcom both does and doesn't keep this trend intact.

If you took a shot for every time you saw "animated still that kind of has motion and moving hair!" in a Falcom OP, you'd be unconscious in a minute.

How'd I not share this?

https://youtu.be/30VhRsLapt0

Also what happened to logo intros like that? Everyone's just some flat, boring, simple text that appears on a black or white screen in silence now.

Is that the PAL version? Not a fan of the Laguna Video Games splash inserted in the middle, but I love the Capcom logo and the intro music (though the JP intro has much better music).

I don't know. I don't remember the Laguna splash as a kid, but I definitely remember seeing this intro and logo growing up.

We entered an era where technology allowed things like lighting, audio mixing or scenery elements such as trees to become so detailed they became very labour intensive. So it made much more financial sense for studios to license engines and middleware designed to do these things for them efficiently.

Trouble is, those licensing deals will often necessitate a logo bump at the beginning when the software boots up (as well as a spot in the credits). There was a transitionary period in late PS2/early PS3 where you'd just be watching logo after logo for 2 minutes straight for some big studio titles. Companies wised up and dialled things back for the most part to avoid that.

I have the US PS1 version and it doesn't have the Leguna Games splash. It does have that awesome Capcom logo, though.

You know something, I wasnt expecting an actual informative answer but that makes such an extreme amount of sense that I forgot my question was somewhat rhetorical.

Damn...

(Still at least for the main publisher, it would be charming.)

Didn't one of the Wip3out games have an intro where they showed some of the shady handling behind the scenes of the organization of these races?
