Collectors corner - Anyone else out there collect?

Post by neorichieb1971 »

Hi,

When I joined this forum after the turn of the century I used this site as a source of information for one of my preferred genres.

Since then I have collected a few systems and just a few games. I was wondering if there are any collectors on this forum.

I know there are a couple at least judging by the sales/wants forums. If you see this thread and its something you enjoy doing as well, might as well see who these people are and talk about playing/collecting/building game rooms/youtube channels/tips and trades.

So I will explain a bit about myself.

I am from the United Kingdom

I collect mostly 16 bit systems. This is what I collect -

Megadrive/Genesis - PAL/JP/USA
SNES - USA/JP
Saturn - JP
PS1 - JP/USA
PS2 - JP/USA
PS3 - PAL/USA
PS4 - PAL
3DO - JP/USA
Gamecube - USA
N64 - JP/USA
Dreamcast - JP/USA

I have some Famicom titles, 1 Master Sytem title. I do collect gaming steelbooks whenever they come about.

If anyone wants to chime in, we can do some pics/chat whatever. I'm in tier 4 lockdown and don't have any local folks to talk to.

Thanks.

Richie.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Ouch, collecting ! The OCD of mine for about the last 3 years.

I'm in France and have been doing JP Sega Saturn. Tried to gather fullsets of genre/categories like shmups, VS fighting, platformer and so on.

Lists and pictures are under spoilers for each category. Pictures may take some time to load.

I'm currently "done" on this collection with about 750 titles (not all pictures here). Only titles I'm still officially seeking are Ruriiro no Yuki T-19716G, and the Mobile Suit Gundam for the stupid collection.

*Stupid Collection : Gundam Side Story jewel case versions
Spoiler
This is the stupid collection : gather as many Gundam Side Story I, II and III in jewel case versions as possible. Codes are T-13307G, T-13311G and T-13313G.

Here we have a picture of its state as of april 2020 (Covid-19) : 10 x SSI, 6 x SSII, 1 x SSIII

Note that Side Story III T-13313G is definitely one of the rarest game in the system, the lack of its spine card on this picture kills me a bit more every day.

*RPG set : 96 titles
Spoiler
This one set was quite fun to gather, but not easy at all. The Saturn has lots of very good jRPG, a shame so few of them were localized (Working Designs made a great work in this domain). Obviously the langage barrier is very strong on many of them, though the fanbase has already translated major titles (modded system or AR required to play ) : SFIII series, Dragon Force II, Sakura Wars, Langrisser III and more.

Among the obscure hard to find versions here are Senken Kigyouden, Black/Matrix T-20118G, Next King ~Koi no Sennen Oukoku~ T-13328G, Farland Saga ~Toki no Michishirube~ T-32509G. The rarest one is Princess Quest T-24603G, a very good exemple as how standard versions may be rarer than limited versions.

*Perverts ! Red X18 Label set : 30 titles
Spoiler
Those are all the adult games which received the 'RedX18' label, meaning it is forbidden for under 18.

Now this one was hard, and I'm happy to have it done. When you start to fight Japanese people on buying adult games via auctions, you never know where it can end.

This spine variant of My Best Friends (the second one on the picture) I only saw once for sale, same for Super Real Mahjong PV P's Club.

I will definitely put you in the category of obsessive/goal driven and completionist.

I have owned/sold and traded a lot of those games in the past. Some on this very forum. My Saturn collection currently is so -

After Burner II (Sega Ages)
Astal
Baku Baku Animal
Batsugun
Bubble Symphony
Capcom Generations 1
Capcom Generations 2
Capcom Generations 3
Capcom Generations 4
Capcom Generations 5
Clockwork Knight
Columns
Darius Gaiden
Earthworm Jim 2
Elevator Action Returns
Fantasy Zone
Game Paradise (The)
Gokujyo Parodius-Da! Deluxe Pack
Gradius Deluxe Pack
Marvel Super Heroes
Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter
Outrun (P1K version)
Panzer Dragoon
Panzer Dragoon Zwei
Power Drift (Sega Ages)
Puzzle Bobble 2x
Saturn Bomberman
Sexy Parodius
Soukyugurentai
Street Fighter Zero
Street Fighter Zero 2
Street Fighter Zero 3 + 4MB ram cartridge
Super Dimension Fortress Macross (The)
Super Puzzle Fighter 2
Virtua Cop
Virtua Cop 2
Xmen Children of the Atom
Xmen vs Street Fighter + 4MB ram cartridge

My Saturn wants are Super Tempo and Chase HQ currently. But hardly a priority. The problem is I wait and it gets more expensive.
My Saturn is a Derby Stallion iteration. My Brown version started to show graphical glitches around 2003-4.

Do you have a good setup for all these Saturn games?
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I think the only thing I have that could be considered a full set is every fighting game released on the Dreamcast.

I collect a lot of crap. DVD/Blurays -mostly anime, I have a pre-order of multiple BD every month with Rightstuf if that tells you anything. Mostly BD now, I basically never buy new DVD anymore. Figures - wish I had more space for the boxes... Video games - tons of Dreamcast, recently focused on re-acquiring top shelf PS1 stuff and almost done, lots of PS2 and then of course loads of PS3, 360 and PS4 almost just by accident... I would say that gen 5/6 are my favorite for quite a bit of things. Certainly the heydey of the JRPG, and this year I went back and played a fair number of that genre on PS1. Books as well, I read a lot. Mostly fantasy and sci-fi. Earlier this year I got rid of some extra books I had acquired due to buying lots or buy accident, it was like 50 books lmao.

I collect, mostly loose carts for the 8 and 16 bit consoles, have gotten a few boxed games over the years, also collect for the Gameboy as well. PS1 and Saturn I try to get what I can too, but I'm nowhere near in number what I have for the 8 and 16 bit consoles. Currently own 1,271 games, somehow I have found room for them, though my storage in such a small space isn't exactly the ideal way I'd like.

the last several years, i've been doing a lot of thinking about collecting, so i'm going to make a big post -

i tend to think of 'collecting' as mostly pernicious and something that tends to frequently get terribly out of hand. curation, however, is pretty dang cool. if you're submitting yourself to arbitrary collection of things - distributor, franchise, console, even limiting to just one medium like video games - i feel like you often wind up accumulating so much detritus that your identity is slowly replaced by a much-lower-than-animal impetus to fill a catalogue and an addiction to the weak dopamine trickle that grants you. one's exterior emptiness ultimately begins to reflect an interior one, and you stop being curious, stop pursuing, stop living, and just fill your world with monuments to your stasis. it's unsurprising many people collect things that meant something to them during (or reflect) their childhood, because that's the last time anything ever meant anything at all to many of them.

i own over 2,000 physical games at this point, but what matters more to me are the experiences and opportunities to share them with others or personally reflect on them. i started my youtube channel to have more to talk about with people on here, and it's become a personal thing i refine that is akin to a travelogue or little journal. i'm happy to do it for myself, and i'm happy when even one single other person gleans something meaningful from 'em. i only started a few years ago, so there's much both forward and backward in my history to look forward to doing more of. i sometimes watch 'em with friends and have a blast talking about them.

anyone with a rom folder of favorites and some good clears under their belt are having just as much joy curating what they're doing, tbh, minus maybe a hampered aesthetic experience without a crt (there's risks to immaterial collection, too! perfunctory, soulless play for quick clears or trophies/achievements is as bad as a wall of unopened amiibo). i do have some fun lookin' shelves for all my conceit, though! glad to take some pictures if there's interest, i try to meaningfully decorate & arrange them to make them an inviting library to my interiority. i tend to get a bit of personal enjoyment out of the physical because it places arbitrary limitations i have power to negotiate with and makes pursuit a bit more engaging. manga, anime, movies, figures, cards, toys, albums, whatever. sometimes i go more digital for a variety of reasons, but i love having things someone can pull off a shelf and have a conversation about or experience with.

i also tend to enjoy the ritual of maintenance! scrubbing the contacts on a cart and sticking it into the machine is an experience that helps me exercise some mindfulness. it reminds me a lot of how much i've come to enjoy making coffee for a loved one - picking the beans, hand-grinding them at the correct coarseness, folding the filter and placing it in the beaker while the water boils, adding a pinch of sugar from between my finger-tips and a bit of cream... and then the aroma, the smiles, the relaxation. ah, geez. you know, i get a bit mushy watching a big filter box empty out, because i get to think of how that was one-hundred times i made someone happy. i don't even drink coffee, myself lol. sometimes the best collections are the ones you have nothing material to show for.

never put the cart(ridge) before the horse - curate first and then let a collection be the side-effect.

I collect a lot of video games. Retro home console games in particular. Some modern games (mostly digital for modern stuff). I've also got a decent video game poster collection.

I mainly focus on the 8 and 16-bit era and always aim for complete items (game, box and manual). Mostly NES, Turbografx-16, Sega Genesis, and SNES. With a spattering of Sega Master System, Sony Playstation, and Sega Saturn. I have a healthy collection now, but always looking to expand upon it. If I had the money I'd get an arcade cabinet collection going. For now arcade collections and other means of emulation will have to suffice to scratch that itch.

In addition I collect random Japanese robot/mecha toys like the new Genesis Climber Mospeada line from the company called Sentinel and the near impossible to get Bandai DX SDF Macross line. Thankfully these releases aren't that numerous.
