♪ Theeere we go, THAT'S more like it ♪!

Yes, Breath of Fire II; One of the most unique RPGs I've ever played, and one of the prettiest. It's traditional in structure, but the decisions made with its gameplay, balance, and pacing are fairly different. Sometimes different in a good way, sometimes in a bad way, and sometimes just... plain... weird.

I love it though. I love it so much, I got someone called Nitrodon to start hacking the game to pieces! His work is where I'll be getting a lot of my knowledge (in addition to BSiron's FAQ on GameFAQs)!

As for the translation... We're not touching it. Capcom decided they could do better than Woolsey, and Capcom was wrong. Instead, we're going with the Retranslation, with it's cleaned up UI and Dash feature.

So welcome, friends, to the most thorough, beginner-friendly, and informative walkthrough you will ever see! Strap in, cuz it's gonna be a wild ride!

Part 1: Breath of Fire II Walkthrough - The Darkness Stirs (Prologue)

NOTE:
We're using the Retranslation, not the official localization. I will still include the official terms, however, to clear up confusion. Also, you should read the descriptions; They will usually be used to cover details I didn't have time for in the episodes themselves.

THE ROUTE THUS FAR:

Gate:
Get the TreePole/Wood Pole from the closet in your bedroom
Talk to the lady who asks you where Yua is (next to the middle house)
Get a Healing Herb from the middle house
Go up to get beat by the Gunhead
– Attack yourself to end it quicker
Re-enter the Church and talk to Papa Hulk
Leave the village, enter the cave, and get smacked by Barubary/Barbaroi

Newhaven:
Get LifePL/Ammonia from the Chief's closet
Get 100z from Ryu & Bow/Bosch’s room
– Will not be available if you got the Healing Herb in the upper house
Get the Antidote from the upper room in the Inn
– SELL: TreePole/Wood Pole & LifePL/Ammonia
– TRADE: Bowie Dagger → Bronze Sword (Ryu)
– BUY: IronAR/Iron Band (Ryu) and Herbs

IF YOU'RE DOING THE MONEY GLITCH (I'm forgoing this for the Walkthrough):
Menu:
Put Ryu in Slot 2 and Bow/Bosch to slot 1

Item Shop:
– SELL: LifePL/Ammonia
– BUY: x6 of any fishing item (the shop description will tell you if it's used for fishing)
[DO NOT BUY 1 AT A TIME!! If you did, just Clean/Auto your inventory to put em in the same stack]

Weapon Shop:
Have Ryu trade for an IronAR/Iron Band or SaladBwl/Headband, then press A & B at the same time to glitch out the game. Do this as many times as you want (speedruns do this until they have about 17-18 million zenny)

After duplicating money:
Say Yes to equip the x6 fishing items over the NatureWP/Benadanti
Someone called "Sten" will get a bugged MoonDrop as a weapon; Said MoonDrop will be absurdly busted.

WHY THE MONEY GLITCH WORKS (don't need to read this, if you don't want to):
I'm not certain as to how A + B causes the game to start editing another character's inventory... But for some reason, it does.

In any case, the game's choice of character depends on which Slot Ryu is in. If Ryu is in Slot 1, the game will edit someone called "Nina". If Ryu is in Slot 2, it will edit "Sten". Slot 3 will edit "Jean/Tapeta", and Slot 4 will edit "Spar/Aspara".

It's important to edit Sten, as the game accidentally uses the character's starting Condition (more on that stat later) to determine what their equipped weapon is (since they're not supposed to be in your party yet). Most characters start with 96/255 Condition, which translates to a TreeST/Wooden Staff (only sells for 50z). Sten, however, starts with 160/255 Condition, which turns into the NatureWP/Benadanti. This sells for 90000z, so you can duplicate money much quicker.

WHY THE BUGGED WEAPONS WORK:
The game is trying to figure out what properties the "weapon" has; So if you transfer the x6 fishing items, the same sees it as having "06". Bit 0 says "this weapon is a Holy weapon", and Bit 6 says "this weapon makes you attack twice in a single turn".

x06 is also what the MoonDrop item is identified as in a normal playthrough, so the game twists itself into a knot assuming that the MoonDrop is what you just equipped into Sten's weapon slot.

Finally, a separate process (so the x06 doesn't enter into this) classifies all items as either weapons, armor, accessories, or consumables. Consumables are always classified as 0x00 or 0x40, so the MoonDrop also gets 64 Attack on top of everything else.

And yes, you can do this as many times as you like, with as many characters as you like.

WHY IT HAS TO BE RYU:
Ryu is the only one who can stack multiple copies of an item (the fishing items) into one Accessory slot. This is what allows us to put x6 of an item into another character's weapon slot. If we attempted this with anyone else, the game would just tell us that the character cannot equip the x6 fishing items.

Part 2: Breath of Fire II Walkthrough - We're Rangers! (Harpies, Pests, & Roach)

THUMBNAIL ART BY: 「せいはち」

Special thanks for giving me permission to use it!
[Pixiv is basically the Japanese version of Deviant Art]

HOW TO MANIPULATE CONDITION:
There are two timers at $CAA and $CAC (addresses found in RAM Search, if on emulator). They always freeze inside maps, always run in dungeons and the Overworld... And are bizarrely inconsistent everywhere else. Even textboxes aren't always safe!

$CAA starts at 0 frames, goes up to 7200 frames (1/60th of a second), then rolls back to 0. $CAC advances by 1 every time it does. $CAC itself goes up to 32 before rolling over to 0. So you can think of these as a clock. The $CAA hand (0-7199) affects the $CAC hand (0-31).

When $CAC reaches a multiple of 4, a value (out of 255) is added to each character's Luck, then multiplied by one of four multipliers. The exact numbers depend on the characters, and can be found in these tables:

Katt/Nina/Bleu:
0: 96
4: 48
8: 4
12: 48
16: 96
20: 96
24: 160
28: 96

Ryu/Bow/Spar:
0: 96
4: 96
8: 32
12: 96
16: 96
20: 176
24: 192
28: 176

Jean:
0: 48
4: 96
8: 160
12: 96
16: 48
20: 32
24: 32
28: 32

Rand/Sten:
0/8/16/24: 160
4/12/20/28: 32

Those numbers are added to the Luck stat of everyone in your Active Party. The sums are then multiplied by one of 4 factors...

-20% (17/32 chance)
+10% (7/32 chance)
+30% (5/32 chance)
+50% (3/32 chance)

Note that a character only needs to be at 192/255 to reach Super. So, even lower numbers like "96" are enough, if your Luck is high enough, and you reset for a 50% multiplier.

So, get to HomeTown/Newhaven, then stand on the Overworld for about 38 minutes (so $CAC is about to reach 20). Go back inside, save, wait for your Conditions to change, then reset till you see Great on both Ryu & Bosch. Then, make copies of this file throughout all three save files, and play as normal. This way, you will never have to do the 38 minute wait again!

COUNTERS, CRITICALS, & DODGES:
These run entirely on Condition. The tables are as follows...

Counters:
Ill: 0/16
Poor/Tired: 1/16
OK/Fine: 2/16
Good: 4/16
Super/Great: 8/16

Criticals:
All Else: 8/64
Good: 16/64
Super/Great: 24/64

Dodges:
Ill: 0/32
Poor/Tired: 2/32
OK/Fine: 3/32
Good: 4/32
Super/Great: 6/32

ENCOUNTER RATES (can be halved by Smokes):
Low encounter rate (Mainly Overworld areas when Ryu's Level is at, or above, the Area Level)
Steps 5-23: 1/64
Steps 24-31: 2/64
Steps 32-39: 8/64
Steps 40-47: 10/64
Steps 48-55: 24/64
Steps 56-63: 32/64

Medium encounter rate (Mainly Overworld areas when Ryu's Level is less than the Area Level)
Steps 5-7: 1/64
Steps 8-15: 2/64
Steps 16-23: 4/64
Steps 24-31: 8/64
Steps 32-39: 16/64
Steps 40-47: 24/64
Steps 48-55: 32/64

High encounter rate (most dungeons, including Infinity)
Steps 5-7: 2/64
Steps 8-15: 8/64
Steps 16-23: 16/64
Steps 24-31: 24/64
Steps 32-39: 32/64
Steps 40-47: 48/64
Steps 48-55: 56/64
Steps 56-63: 64/64

Very high encounter rate (area around HomeTown, below level 5)
Steps 5-7: 8/64
Steps 8-15: 16/64
Steps 16-23: 24/64
Steps 24-31: 32/64
Steps 32-39: 48/64
Steps 40-47: 56/64
Steps 48-63: 64/64

HOW THE SHOT/SNIPE COMMAND WORKS:
The base accuracy of Shot is based on the target's Luck. Multiply these by 1.2x if Bow is in Super/Excellent; Otherwise, multiply them by 1.3x (that's not a typo; the game reads the commands in the wrong order :| ...)

Enemy Luck:
1-8: 25/64
9-16: 23/64
17-24: 21/64
25-32: 19/64
33-40: 17/64
41-48: 15/64
49-56: 13/64
57-64: 11/64

HOW DEFEND WORKS:
This blocks both melee & magic damage down to one of four amounts...

50% (3/16 chance)
64% (6/16 chance)
75% (6/16 chance)
81% (1/16 chance)

FORMATION MULTIPLIERS (for now):
Normal: x1.0 Damage Dealt & Received, x1.0 Crits

Scramble/Scatter (1st Slot): x1.3 Damage Dealt & Received, x1.3 Crits
Scramble/Scatter (2nd Slot): x0.9 Damage Dealt, x0.85% Received, x0.85 Crits

COCKROACH REVIVAL CHANCES:
50% to die
30% to revive with 30 HP
12% to revive with 40 HP
6% to revive with 50 HP

THE ROUTE THUS FAR:[/b]

Overworld:
Get LVL 2 for both PCs before Futabi

Mt. Futabi:
PARTY FORMATION: Bosch in Slot 1, Ryu in Slot 2
Use Shot/Snipe on Widows & Corpses

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Three Harpies (70 HP for Parreux, 40 HP for others): Scatter
Turn 1: Bosch attacks Pijo or Putti, Ryu Defends
Turn 2: Ryu heals himself up
Turns Onward: Heal whenever Ryu is so much as scratched!
---------------------------------------------------------

Keep Scatter Formation
Get Headband in the right side of 1st cave room (equip on Ryu when healing)
Get Firecracker in the left side of 2nd room
LVL 6-7: Ryu Defends if no Gunheads, Leeches, or Goblins to kill

Nero’s House:

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Cockroaches: Normal
Auto small Cockroaches
Auto the big one as well (Ryu & Bosch outspeed it)
---------------------------------------------------------

Head back to Newhaven for scenes.

Part 3: Breath of Fire II Walkthrough - Gimme a Chance

THE RUN FORMULA:
Subtract enemy Vigor from your own, and you'll get the following run chances...

-33 or less: 8/64
-32 to -9: 10/64
-8 to -1: 16/64
0 to 7: 22/64
8 to 15: 28/64
16-31: 32/64
32-55: 36/64
56-95: 40/64
96-143: 44/64
144-199: 48/64
200-255: 52/64
256-511: 30/64 (Nitrodon can't begin to guess why)

Check your current HP, and see if it's more than 70% of your max HP:
more than 70% HP: +0%
70% or less: +40%

Finally, you will gain an additional multiplier (or penalty) depending on where the invisible clock is at (updates every 8 minutes).

0: -5%
1-63: +0%
64-127: +5%
128-191: +10%
192-255: +30%

Want to keep track of the above numbers? Take the values from the following table, and add them to your party's average Luck (the clock changes at the same time as your party Condition, so it's possible to keep track without RAM Watch... If you really want to):

0: 32
4: 32
8: 96
12: 96
16: 160
20: 224
24: 160
28: 96

This, of course, is a whole lot of words for "running is really hard, and should not be bothered with, except for when noted below" .

THE ROUTE THIS EPISODE:

Newhaven:
Walk outside and go up to the upper-left to talk to Kilgore
Talk to Bosch inside your room
– BUY: Up to x9 Herbs
– STORE: All your remaining Zenny.
Safety save; it's gonna get rough.
Take Bosch to Township

Township:
Avoid the statue; It's better to respawn at HomeTown/Newhaven

Overworld:
Force an encounter by the bridge
Fight one big enemy or any number of Tetsi Flies; run from two big enemies.
– Buy more Herbs if you die and respawn at Newhaven.

Colossea:
Go into the Pub and talk to bartender to make it night time
Talk to Rand (the big grey guy)
Go upstairs and get a Smoke from the bottom drawer
Go into the Inn just next door
– Skip the Inn; Herbs heal almost all your HP, and only cost 8z to the Inn's 20z
Snag Clothing & Herb from the drawers upstairs
– BUY: Up to x9 Herbs; Also an Antidote, if you used one on the way
– SELL: Clothing & Smoke
– RETRIEVE: All your stored Zenny, if the sum will be 855z or more. Otherwise, leave inside.
Go to the Church, and snag a 10th Herb from the top drawer
Try to Donate till your total Zenny (including what's in the bank) is 855z or more
Save your game (don’t need to reset upon death; this is just for respawning)
– TRADE: Ranger Suit & Bronze Helm

Part 4: Breath of Fire Walkthrough - Lethal Dose (Baba to Augus)

THUMBNAIL ART BY: 「せいはち」
せいはち's ART GALLERY: https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/3498832
Special thanks for giving me permission to use it!
[Pixiv is basically the Japanese version of Deviant Art]

NOTE:
Recording this episode was a mess, as a pretty large chunk of the original audio was unusable, due to terrible static leaking through. I stitched it all together as best I could in post-production, but I missed a spot at 3:35 & 9:01.

Still, it's also one of my favorites, in a way. It has some of my favorite jokes, I love the delivery of them with me & Skaizo, and it also has some incredibly interesting information about Augus' AI, for those of you familiar with this game.

ENEMY AI:
Docaden/Trent:
50% Defend, 50% Spark/Flare (even if out of AP)

Bugbear:
50% Miss, 50% Critical

Harpy:
All Enemies are over 75% HP: 1.5% to Defend; Otherwise, Attack (87.5%), Cure 1 (12.5%)
Someone is under 75% HP: Cure 1 the most injured one, with ties going to the latest slot. Attack once AP is drained.
BABA/BUNYAN AI (37.5% Counter-Attack rate):
Always Attack

KATT/LIN AI (50% Crit Rate):
62.5% Attack
37.5% Dare (Reduces Ryu's Offense to 1)

AUGUS/ARGUS AI (Attacks twice per round):
Attack #1:
50% Attack Slot 1, 50% BuildUp (2.5x Damage to the next attack)

Attack #2:
Always attack if BuildUp's active. Otherwise...
62.5% Attack Randomly, 25% Cure 1, 12.5% Buildup
HOW WAKE/ROUSE WORKS:
Wake/Rouse will never revive the same ally twice in the same fight (just as allies cannot revive themselves twice). Otherwise, its success rate relies mostly on Rand's Guts/Will stat. The table is as follows:

0 Flame(s): 128/256
1 Flame(s): 136/256
2 Flame(s): 144/256
3 Flame(s): 152/256
4 Flame(s): 160/256
5 Flame(s): 172/256
6 Flame(s): 184/256
7 Flame(s): 192/256

Add 3/256 for every Guts flame the target has.

DAMAGE FORMULAS FOR MELEE ATTACKS:
Check BSiron's FAQ for player character attacks ("AttackbyPlayerCharacter"): https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/snes/5635 ... /faqs/5436
Enemy attacks are the same, except their final Damage is modified like so (after all other steps):
Final Damage = Pwr + (Luck * (1/8, 2/8, 3/8, or 4/8)) + (0 or 1)
This formula, along with BSiron's Damage tables, are how I knew Katt/Lin's critical hits could do 10-30 Damage.

THE ROUTE:

Coursair/Colossea:
Make sure you have at least x10 Herbs, x1 Antidote, and all the best gear
Save your game at the Church, so you can deathwarp back.

Overworld:
Go up to Tagzi Woods.

Tagzi Woods:
Head straight to Bunyan
Auto everything except for Bugbear encounters with a Maneater or Harpy. Run from those.
– You can also attempt to crit & counter Harpies, if you're in Great Condition.

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Bunyan (169 HP):
He can counter, and can also do up to 14 Damage with each hit. He's also slower, however, so plan accordingly.
---------------------------------------------------------

Deathwarp (re-equip the Bandana inside a battle to lower Defense)

Colossea:
Talk to Rand again, inside the pub
– BUY: Up to x9 Herbs and x5 Antidotes (x6 Herbs & x2 Antidotes is sufficient)
Go up to the Colosseum, go into the right room, then take the left door

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. HR Director (160 HP):
Auto
---------------------------------------------------------

Heal with Herbs, then Sort your inventory
Talk to Argus, then SAVE YOUR GAME
IGNORE THE CHEST until Rand tells you to give him your money
Snag the 1000z now that Rand’s not taking it, then fight Lin!

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Lin (220 HP):
Heal whenever you’re hurt; She has a 50% chance to crit each turn, and can do up to 30 Damage
---------------------------------------------------------

– BUY: Hexa Staff, Catsuit, Iron Band, & Bronze Helm
Fully equip Lin (you’re keeping all her original stuff)

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Argus (680 HP): Scatter
Equip the Bronze Helm on Rand
Ryu & Lin attack every turn, while Rand preemptively heals Ryu

Argus charging on his 2nd Action means BOTH attacks next turn will be boosted. Switch to Normal, then Defend with Ryu if this happens.

IF RYU DIES: Rand uses Wake/Rouse on him immediately
IF KATT/LIN DIES: Let her stay down till Augus is two attacks away from death. After that, you can decide whether or not to revive her.

Wake/Rouse has a little more than a 50% chance of working when totaling Rand's current Guts stat with Lin's, so it's likely to work. Still, Augus could always do something nasty with Crits + Buildup. It's your choice.

IF YOU WIPE: Just try again. It's only a short walk, and you should've spent everything on Katt's equipment beforehand.
---------------------------------------------------------

Remove Rand’s Bronze Helm IMMEDIATELY!!

[Pixiv is basically the Japanese version of Deviant Art]

ENEMY AI:

Solo Hood/Thug:
Always attack

P.Spider/Black Widow:
1/64 defend
Otherwise: 193/256 Poison Attack, 63/256 Attack

x4 HOODS/THUGS AI:
If x1-2 are dead, there's a 25% chance of calling for another Thug, after the 1st action of the turn.
If x3 are dead, this increases to a 37.5% chance.
Either way, this can be done up to 16 times (which is why the Firecracker is so desirable)

[Hoods are supposed to be able to heal themselves and each other with Herb, and also gang up on whichever party member has less HP. Two bugs make this impossible.]

JOKER AI
1/64 defend
Otherwise: 65/256 Psn.Chop/Miasma, 191/256 Attack
[Psn.Chop/Miasma is the same as a regular Attack, except it targets everyone, and has a chance of poisoning each person it hits]

THE ROUTE:

Overworld:
Remove Rand’s Bronze Helm IMMEDIATELY!!
Roll on to Nero’s House for sequence triggers!

Township
SAVE YOUR GAME!!
– This is for deathwarping later.
Head back to Newhaven

Newhaven:
Do cutscenes at magic school, then go to Mt. Rocco

Mt. Rocco:
Auto the Thug
Answer anything but "Payne" to the guy that quizzes you, then Auto
Switch Ryu to the front before checking the hole
Auto the battle until Lin’s in danger; she’s more fragile than Ryu
Take 4 steps in the next room, then heal Ryu
Skip the treasure for now, and keep going up
Auto the lone Thug
Firecracker the x4 Thug group!
– You'll enjoy a full party heal right before...

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Joker (580 HP): Scatter
Herbs with everyone when he uses Psn.Chop/Miasma (~25% Chance to do so)
– Miasma does normal melee Damage, just to everyone in the party, while attempting to poison. Ryu may be able to delay healing, since he's bulky
– Everyone outspeeds, so you'll be fine.
Spam Frost with Nina, since he’s weak to it
---------------------------------------------------------

Get all the treasure you skipped before on the way out (100z, Silver Knife, Lucky Charm, & 1000z)
Only Ryu should attack the Will o’ Wisps & Ghouls, once he has the Silver Knife
Nina should more-or-less just Defend, since none of her spells are quite strong enough to OHKO.

It has rough edges, but it also had a lot of heart and passion put behind it. If you enjoy JRPGs, I think you'll enjoy this one. Just know it can be a bit janky at times.

Also, if you meet a guy called Sten, make sure to raise him, along with Rand. It'd be a spoiler to say why, but... Trust me, you'll understand why later.

せいはち's ART GALLERY: https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/3498832
Special thanks for giving me permission to use it!
[Pixiv is basically the Japanese version of Deviant Art]

IMPORTANT NOTE:
The Defensive Formation is our default Formation for most of the game, for reasons I'll go into next episode. For now, just know that we need more Defense, not more Offense.

ENEMY AI:
Dethpedes/Poison Movers
1/64 defend
Otherwise, 65/256 Poison Breath, 191/256 attack

Killer Goblins:
If any monster is dead, 50% run away
Otherwise, 1/64 defend
Otherwise, 65/256 Def-Down/Weaken, 191/256 attack

Kimoto/Lizardmen
1/64 defend
Otherwise, 65/256 cast spell, 191/256 attack

Spell list: Def-Up/Protect (50%), Atk-Up/Might (50%)

Stooly/Handy Fungusi
1/64 defend
Otherwise, 129/256 cast spell, 127/256 attack

Spell list: Ag-Down/Slow (25%), Pwr.Down/Blunt (25%), Def-Down/Weaken (50%)

THE ROUTE:

Overworld:
Head to Wyndia and split up attacks while Ryu and Lin split attacks

Wyndia:
Snag the Wooden Staff & 100z in the Inn
– SELL: SuedeAR/Tanned Armor, Bronze Sword, & Wooden Staves
– BUY: Long Sword, Chain Mail, GlassRG/Glass Helm, & x2 BronzeSH/Escutcheons
Spend the leftovers on Herbs
Equip the party like so:
--------------------------------
Ryu: Long Sword, BronzeSH/Escutcheon, Ranger Suit, Bronze Helm
Sten: Silver Knife, BronzeSH/Escutcheon, Chain Mail, Bronze Helm
Lin: Hexa Staff, IronAR/Iron Band, LeotardCL/Catsuit, GlassRG/Glass Helm
Nina: Ring, IronAR/Iron Band, Clothing, SaladBwl/Headband
--------------------------------

– CHANGE FORMATION: Auto the party as Ryu/Sten/Lin/Nina in Defensive

Overworld:
Heal every 15 steps, if you get poisoned and have no Antidotes left.
Get a HelpBL/Vitamin from the house on the way
You can usually just coast on Auto, except for these encounters:
– X3 Killer Goblins: Use Defensive Formation and split attacks while using Jolt
– x2 Poison Movers: Ryu attacks one, Sten & Lin attack the other. Nina uses Jolt in Turn 1, and Defends in Turn 2.
– x3 Handy Fungusi: Defensive Formation. Ryu and Sten use Attack + Flare on one, while Lin and Nina do that on another.
– X2-3 Lizardmen: Defensive Formation. Ryu & Sten split their attacks (with Sten using Flare), Lin Defends, and Nina uses Jolt. Then Lin finishes the last in Turn 2, if x3

Capitan:
Rest at the Inn
Go to the building next to the Inn, and get a Wisdom Seed from the top dresser
SELL: Antidotes (if applicable)
BUY: Up to x45 Herbs

Part 7: Breath of Fire II Walkthrough—There's Something Here (Terapin)

THUMBNAIL ART BY: Merinid-DE
MERINID-DE's ART GALLERY: https://www.deviantart.com/merinid-de

ENEMY AI:
Creons/Godius:
1/256 Defend
75% chance of scoring a 2nd hit in the same round

Villagers:
Do Nothing

Chirorus/Tyrols:
Always Attack

TERAPIN/GONCHARO AI:
Attack All (12.5%)
Attack One (25%)
Fire Breath (25%)
Brainwave (37.5%)

FORMATION MULTIPLIERS (with 4 characters):

NORMAL:
1st Slot—130% Damage Dealt & Taken, 130% Critical Hit Rate
2nd Slot—95% Damage Dealt, 90% Damage Taken, 90% Critical Hit Rate
3rd Slot—90% Damage Dealt, 85% Damage Taken, 85% Critical Hit Rate
4th Slot—75% Damage Dealt, 75% Damage Taken, 80% Critical Hit Rate

SCRAMBLE/SCATTER:
1st Slot—120% Damage Dealt & Taken, 115% Critical Hit Rate
2nd Slot—120% Damage Dealt & Taken, 115% Critical Hit Rate
3rd Slot—100% Damage Dealt & Taken, 100% Critical Hit Rate
4th Slot—95% Damage Dealt, 90% Damage Taken, 90% Critical Hit Rate

DEFENSIVE:
1st Slot—100% Damage Dealt & Taken, 100% Critical Hit Rate
2nd Slot—83% Damage Dealt, 80% Damage Taken, 85% Critical Hit Rate
3rd Slot—83% Damage Dealt, 80% Damage Taken, 85% Critical Hit Rate
4th Slot—75% Damage Dealt & Taken, 80% Critical Hit Rate

PARALLEL:
1st Slot—120% Damage Dealt & Taken, 115% Critical Hit Rate
2nd Slot—100% Damage Dealt & Taken, 100% Critical Hit Rate
3rd Slot—90% Damage Dealt, 85% Damage Taken, 85% Critical Hit Rate
4th Slot—83% Damage Dealt, 80% Damage Taken, 85% Critical Hit Rate

CURE 2/REJUVINATE VS. RENEW/RAISE DEAD (Summary):
Raise Dead is inconsistent in its chances, redundant due to Rand's Wake command, and obsoleted once you're able to buy LifePLs/Ammonias.

Cure 2 is always useful, in comparison. Plus, Nina can regenerate AP via her Will command.

THE ROUTE:

Capitan:
Walk into the Well with full HP & AP, as well as x45 Herbs
Use Defensive Formation against Godius, and have Nina Defend. Heal Ryu if he’s 40 HP or less, Sten if 34 HP or less, and Lin & Nina if they’re so much as scratched

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Goncharo (1300 HP): Normal (Defensive when healing)
Everyone either attacks, or heals when necessary. Have Sten Herb if only one needs it; otherwise, have him use Spark while Nina uses Cyclone.
Nina’s slower than Goncharo, so don’t go out of your way to keep her alive. Have her heal herself, and just hope Goncharo never does x2 AoEs
—Goncharo can kill with crits, but never fear; They only have a 1.5% chance of happening, and you can still win even with just two attackers.
---------------------------------------------------------

Get the Vitalizer and Amulet on the way out
Lie to Ray about saving everyone, so you can get Rejuvenate on Nina
SELL: Amulet
BUY: x6 Smoke Bombs and as many Wisdom Seeds as possible
Equip a bunch of weak armor to Ryu & Sten, then deathwarp back to Township.

Township:
Walk in and out to finish renovations
Give Rejuvinate to Nina
Make a Ryu/Rand/Nina/Sten party

Whew! That's pretty impressive. I really like the fact that You are talking about the calculations and game mechanics, which is not easy to find out, and I haven't seen any BOF guide so far, with so much details about technical stuff.
Now that I am digging through your walk-through, I feel like starting BoFII from beginning again, using your guide :)

Thank you very much, Guut. Tell me if you ever need any help, ok :) ?

EDIT: Oh yeah, one other thing. The GBA version gives you x2 EXP & x3 Gold from all monsters, so that's where you'd wanna start, if you're worried the SNES might be a little difficult. There's a patch to fix the graphics & sound too, if I recall.

Part 8: Breath of Fire II—Awakening (Shamans & Dragons)

THUMBNAIL ART BY: Chiakimi
TWITTER: https://twitter.com/chiakimi_

CORRECTION ON BOMB SEEDS:
The Pollen/Bomb Seeds' chance of using Flame/Flameblast is actually less than 1%. I forgot to account for it's 75% chance to use BuildUp in the episode itself.

EQUIPMENT BEFORE NYMPHO'S TOWER:
Ryu: Longsword, Ranger Suit, BronzeSH/Escutcheon, & Bronze Helm
Sten: Silver Knife, Chain Mail, BronzeSH/Escutcheon, & Bronze Helm
Rand: Bare Knuckle, SuedeAR/Tanned Armor, IronAR/Iron Band, & Bandana
Nina: FalseRG/Ring, Bum'sCL/Clothes, IronAR/Iron Band, & GlassRG/Glass Helm

ITEMS BEFORE NYMPHO'S TOWER:
x6 Smoke Bombs
x3+ Wisdom Seeds (more is preferred)

ABOUT THE CARPENTERS:
You may choose only one of the following:

1) The cooking carpenter (always available)
2) The treehouse carpenter (requires you to save 3-4 villagers last episode)
3) The Arabian carpenter (requires you to save 5-6 villagers last episode)

CHOICE OF CARPENTER:
The cooking carpenter (far-right house)

ENEMY AI:
S.Idol/Stone Faces (Weak to fire)
65/128 defend
Otherwise, 129/256 ColdBrth, 127/256 attack

Pollens/Bomb Seeds (Weak to ice)
If used BuildUp last turn, attack
Otherwise, 3/4 Buildup
Otherwise, 1/64 defend
Otherwise, 33/256 cast spell, 223/256 attack

Spell list: 75% Spark, 25% Flame

Stamen/Androeciums (Weak to fire)
1/64 defend
Otherwise, 129/256 SwtBrth, 127/256 attack

H.Fly/Beezlebubs (Weak to wind)
1/64 defend
Otherwise, 129/256 cast spell, 127/256 attack

Spell list: 75% Psn.Atck, 25% Curse

DRAGON DAMAGE (EXACT):
Fract = [ ([current AP/2]*256) / [max AP/2] ]

Squared = [ fract^2 / 256 ]

If squared is less than 1, squared = 1

Damage = [ squared * (base power) / 256 ]
[Base power of all Puppy/Whelp spells is 256]

DRAGON DAMAGE (SIMPLIFIED):
Damage = Base Power * (Current AP / Max AP) ²

THE ROUTE:

Overworld:
Run & Roll on back to Capitan

Capitan:
Save your game (YAY!! You can save your game again!)
Talk to Sanamo to head to hut
Snag the Ammonia from the closet before entering the circle
Walk back to Capitan...or die on the way
Get the Wisdom Seed
Talk to the first guy you see to instantly head back to Township.

Township:
Perform ANOTHER death warp.
Kill Rand with the three melee guys (including himself), while Nina Defends. Kill Nina. Kill Ryu next, then Sten.

Capitan:
Choose the carpenter in the far right house!
Snag the Guts Pill in said carpenter’s cabinet while you’re at it
—Keep these; They're incredible for cooking Gold Nuggets later.
Head on over to the forest and talk to Tapeta

Overworld: (Defensive Formation)
Auto, then make the party Ryu/Sten/Rand/Nina
Auto your items, Sort Smoke Bombs to the top
Roll on down to the campground to safety save
—Bomb Seeds, and the boss of Nympho's Tower, can troll you with obscenely bad luck. x2 Stone Faces can also troll, if you don't have enough Wisdom Seeds to splurge on OHKOing either one with a Fire Whelp.
Roll on up to Nympho’s Tower
—Flare on Androceiums and Frost on Bomb Seeds (Bomb Seeds are a OHKO)
—Use Fire Whelps and spells on x2 Stone Faces, if you have more than x3 Wisdom Seeds (or are close to camp). Otherwise, just Flee, as they have only 1 Vigor

What perils await in the Witch's Tower? Stay tuned and find out!

Image

Part 9: Breath of Fire II Walkthrough—Cold and Dark (Witch's Tower)

PARTY:
Ryu/Sten/Rand/Nina

EQUIPMENT BEFORE NYMPHO'S TOWER:
Ryu: Longsword, Ranger Suit, BronzeSH/Escutcheon, & Bronze Helm
Sten: Silver Knife, Chain Mail, BronzeSH/Escutcheon, & Bronze Helm
Rand: Bare Knuckle, SuedeAR/Tanned Armor, IronAR/Iron Band, & Bandana
Nina: FalseRG/Ring, Bum'sCL/Clothes, IronAR/Iron Band, & GlassRG/Glass Helm

ITEMS BEFORE NYMPHO'S TOWER:
x2-6 Smoke Bombs (save at least two for the top floor)
x3+ Wisdom Seeds (more is preferred)

ENEMY AI:
H.Fly/Beezlebubs (Weak to wind)
1/64 defend
Otherwise, 129/256 cast spell, 127/256 attack

Spell list: 75% Poison Attack, 25% Curse

Magician Mummies (Weak to fire & holy)
1/64 defend
Otherwise, 129/256 cast spell, 127/256 attack

Spell list: Spark/Flare, Cold/Frost

Like many spellcaster enemies, M.Mummy is intended to just attack when its AP is 12.5% or lower. However, this check is bugged, so this will never happen.

Monopeds/Fachens (Weak to cold; No resistance to status ailments)
1/64 defend, 63/64 attack

These have a 50% critical hit rate.

Ogres/Orcs
1/64 defend
Otherwise, 65/256 Cure 1/Heal, 191/256 attack

These have a 3/8 chance to Counter-Attack

Seenates/Acorn Knights
1/256 defend, 63/256 attack once, 3/4 attack twice

WHY SESSO THE WATER SHAMAN ISN'T USEFUL:
The target's Wisdom mostly decides its resistance to status ailments (including death). The caster's Wisdom simply modifies that chance, and there are steep diminishing returns from where Nina & Spar start.

In addition, there are multiple pieces of armor that give immunity to status ailments by the enemies, as all of these spells (except Death) fall under the Holy element. The Breath & Life Armor are the two most prominent examples of this. So, in the rare cases that they're a threat, we'll be prepared.

On a side-note, there's also a character named Spar/Aspara who gets more out of Sesso than almost anyone. She boosts ALL of his stats (besides HP) by 30%... However, he's not going to be used often enough to make Sesso worth it.

THE ROUTE:

Nympho’s Tower:
Keep stepping on Nympho's iron plate with Ryu.

--------------------------------
ENEMY ENCOUNTERS (Defensive)
Magician Mummies:
Can do 30-40 Damage with spells, but only once, and you can blunt damage with Defend. Sten OHKO, so just have him attack. Alternatively, you let one blow its load, then Nina regenerate MP.

X1-3 Beezlebubs:
Nina Defends, while the others attack

x4-5 Beezlebubs:
Nina or Rand use Thunder/Jolt, while the others Defend

Fachens:
Nina Frosts while the others Defend. Can also land Blunt and stall for MP, since they have no resistance to status ailments.

Ogres:
You can land Blunt on one and stall for MP, if you like (~71% accurate)

X1 Acorn Knight:
Save your Whelp spell for x2 Acorn Knights or the boss, but otherwise, use your strongest attacks.

x2 Acorn Knights:
Have Ryu OHKO one of them with a Whelp spell in Round 1, and use your strongest attacks on the other.
--------------------------------

2nd Floor:
Use Smoke Bomb after 4 steps

3rd Floor:
Use Smoke Bomb when about to emerge from narrow passage, then take the 4th platform from the right

2nd Floor:
Snag all chests, except the far middle-left one, the far middle-bottom one, the far middle-top one, and the one just below the far-middle top one

3rd Floor:
Take the far left platform

4th Floor:
Use Smoke Bomb after going STRAIGHT down from stairs, step on the middle of three plates, step on plate directly upper-right from the lower-left chest, then step on the middle of three plates. Snag the Silk Glove, use a Smoke Bomb shortly after, then snag the Warlock Ring & Sage’s Robe (equip Silk Glove & Sage's Robe to Nina when convenient). Step on the nearest plate to proceed.

5th Floor:
Use Smoke Bomb, then ride the left platform for a Wisdom Brace,

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Nympho (550 HP): Defensive

Turn 1:
Ryu uses Whelp, Sten Simoons, Rand uses Wisdom Seed on Ryu, then Nina uses Slow

Turn 2:
Ryu uses another Whelp
---------------------------------------------------------

5th Floor:
Use Smoke Bomb, take right platform for Wisdom Fruit, and drop off!

Overworld:
Walk back to Tapeta and kiss him with Nina
CHANGE PARTY: Ryu/Sten/Nina/Tapeta party

Tbh I did not read the whole story here, but I can recognize love and dedication to a game when I see them. And this is a awesome testimony of such things for BoFII. I’m sending many congratulations to you, keep up the good work.

Also, each time I read the thred title too fast, methinks : new Twin Peaks spinoff ? Fire, walk, with.

Post by Fionordequester »

Alright!  Here's a Bonus episode, on all the plethora of ways you can crack the game wide open, as well as the ground rules for which of these I am, and am not, allowing myself!

Image

Bonus #2: Breath of Fire II Walkthrough—How to Break the Game, Part 1

LOW% BAN LIST:
1) 2nd Tier Dragons (Requires a Strategy Guide)
2) All Tenants (Permanently Missable)
3) The Secret Character (Requires either a Strategy Guide, or Watts the Quizmaster—a tenant you have almost no chance of ever getting)
4) The Water, Earth, Holy, & Devil Shamans (Optional; Will still collect and show off, however)
5) Chop-Chop/Slice & Boombada (Optional... Though I never use 'em anyway)

STILL ALLOWED:
1) Kaiser Dragon (Required to progress the plot)
2) The Fire & Wind Shamans (Required to progress the plot)
3) Cooking Carpenter (The only carpenter who's always available)

TENANTS RECRUITED:
1) Remington (Capitan Inn)
2) Beretta (Windia Armory)
3) Heckler (Leftmost house in HomeTown/Newhaven, *before* expansion; Replaces Watts)
4) Hans (Leftmost house in HomeTown/Nehaven, *after* expansion)

HOW TO EXPAND TOWNSHIP:
1) Fill up all three houses
2) Ask the carpenter to expand your town for 1000z
3) Enter, exit, and re-enter Township 8 times.

HOW TO COOK GOLD BRICKS:
1) Three stat-boosters (Guts Pills & Cond.Ups/Turbocharges count)
2) One of the following: Wisdom Seed, LifePL/Ammonia, Extract/Restorative, and almost any fish (except for Unagi/Garfish & Bait/Crappie).

CHANCE OF GETTING CHARCOAL INSTEAD (applies to all recipes):
(Ryu LVL / 6) /64
[Why does the game penalize you for having a higher leveled Ryu? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ]

CHANCE TO GET DOUBLE ITEMS:
(floor(total size / result size) * (16 if result size = 1, 8 if 2, 4 if 4 or 8, 2 if 16 or 32)) / 64
[Gold Bricks have a value of "1", which is why they're guaranteed doubles with the above recipe)

RECIPE COMPENDIUM (contains the "size" and "type" of all items, for plugging into the above formula and figuring out what makes what):
http://pkhack.fobby.net/misc/txt/bof2_cooking.txt
[GoldBars/Gold Bricks don't technically have sizes programmed in, so they default to "1"; The same size as Herbs)

"PLOT POINTS" THUS FAR (Beretta upgrades her wares for every 8 plot points you get, up to a max of 24):
1. Breaking Nimufu's curse on Jean.
2. Recruiting Seso.
3. Acquire the dragon powers from the old man behind the waterfall.
4. Recruiting three residents and expanding Township.

HANS' SHOP RECOMMENDATION:
x7 Iron Braces (empty inventory slot for Ryu)
x2 Dream Jewels (For the "dragon shotgun" trick with Ryu & Rand)
x4 Cond.Ups/Turbocharges (in case your Condition rolls around back to what it was)

THE EMPTY SLOT INITIATIVE GLITCH:
The FastShoe/Speed Shoes were supposed to set your preemptive attack rate to 25%, when equipped to your 1st Slot character...

But the programmers accidentally used LDA $40 instead of LDA #$40.  In programming language, that's the difference between asking for Address $40 (for whatever value is stored in there), and asking for byte 40 (which represents the actual item).  And at Address $40 is... a blank space.  00.  Hence, "00" is what the looks looks for.  If you have one blank space in the 1st Slot's accessory spaces, you've got the 25% pre-emptive.

THE INTENDED PRE-EMPTIVE RATE FOR PARTIES WITH NO SPEED SHOES:
It was primarily based off the same timer that governed run chances & party condition.  ($5010; the one that advances every 8 minutes).  Add these values to the party's Average Luck...

0: 32
1: 32
2: 96
3: 96
4: 160
5: 224
6: 160
7: 96

...then adjust by one of four multipliers...

-20% (17/32 chance)
+10% (7/32 chance)
+30% (5/32 chance)
+50% (3/32 chance)

These numbers are added to your average party Luck, then adjusted by 1 of 4 multipliers (Note that the result caps at 255).  Then look at the following tables for your final pre-emptive chance (where N is a value from 0-3, depending on the enemy group... though I don't know exactly which enemies are which):

Ill: never
0-63: (2+N)/64
64-127: (2+N)/64
128-191: (4+N)/64
192-255: (8+N)/64

...Fortunately, this is moot by the above glitch, so... Don't worry about it!

AVAILABLE NORMAL FUSIONS:
Sanamo (25% Offense): Rand & Nina
Sesso (25% Wisdom): Rand, Nina, Sten, & Jean/Tapeta

AVAILABLE COLOR CHANGE FUSIONS:
Sanamo (50% Offense): Sten

Re: Walkthrough the Fire & Flames, with Breath of Fire II!

Post by Fionordequester »

Alright everyone, here's a question: Up till now, I've been doing a lot of post-production work... Perhaps too much. Basically, I've been editing out every instance of me and Skaizo stumbling over our words, or talking over each other. That seemed like a good idea at the time...

But the cost of that is that I have to re-sync all our dialogue every time, usually by "filling in the holes" with more words. Then from there comes me pining over whether or not the new stuff is the same volume as the old stuff, or whether the new delivery matches with the old delivery, and etc...

So here's an experiment—The next episode with little editing! What you hear in this episode is basically our commentary STRAIGHT out of the recording booth. Tell me what you think; If you notice a difference in quality. Thanks so much!

1/64 defend
Otherwise: 129/256 spell, 127/256 attack
Spell list: SwtBrth/Dream Breath, Cure 1/Heal, Spark/Flare, Thunder/Jolt

SLICE (given to 1 PC) vs. +16 HP BOOST (given to the entire party):
Slice is a great early to mid-game move (especially for Sten) that does 50-81 DMG, pierces defense, and costs 0 AP... However, it eventually gets obsoleted by other attacks. The +16 HP boost, however, never stops being useful; In fact, it turns some OHKOs in the end-game to two-hit KOs, given how low my levels are going to be.

HOW TO GET THE +16 BOOST?:
It all depends on the Wild Cat's Mood gauge, which lowers depending on...

1) How many instructions you obeyed

2) How many times you say "No" before you finally forgive him

If you obeyed all the instructions, you have to say "No" three times. If you obeyed all but one of them, you only have to say "No" once. Disobey any more than that, and you get it automatically!

CORRECTION ON NIMUFU:
The game DOES actually follow upon her via a throwaway line from a Township tenant called "Whoopi"! She actually starts having feelings for Jean!

Will display this in Part 12!

THE ROUTE:

Overworld:
Get SokletAR/Circlet & KmikzeBL/Void Sphere
Un-equip Nina & Tapeta
Go STRAIGHT to Fort Nageur, going right when horizontal to the lone tree!

Fort Nageur:
Get Deluxe Pole after waking in bed
BUY: Copper Baton & Buckler (Lin), Iron Knuckle (Rand)
SELL: SuedeAR/Tanned Armor, Iron Band, Sage’s Robe, Warlock Ring, SaladBwl/Headband, BronzeSH/Escutcheon, Wisdom Brace, & Deluxe Rod
TRADE: IronML/Iron Plate (Sten), IronAR/Iron Armor (Ryu)
Swim left to the campfire and make a Rand/Sten/Lin/Ryu party
Equip them all properly (Circlet to Ryu)!
Save, then go left to the Wild Cat Restaurant

Wild Cat Restaurant:
Follow all the orders except for turning in your weapons.

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Garcon (250 HP): Defensive; Scatter if it goes to Turn 3
Turn 1: Auto
Turn 2: Defend with Rand, if he got hit (Defend lets him survive another blow)
Turn 3: Scatter formation and finish him off!
---------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Wild Cat Chef (610 HP): Normal, then Scatter once Lin is hit
Sten spams Simoon, Ryu uses Whelp, then you just hope & pray from there
Switch to Scatter once Lin gets hit
---------------------------------------------------------

Get +16 HP boost from Wild Cat Chef by saying "No" once, before saying Yes!

Fort Nageur:
Swap Ryu to the front and Rand to the back
Beat up guard

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Jailer (460 HP): Defensive, then Scatter
Turn 1: Ryu uses Whelp, Sten uses Simoon, Lin Defends, and Rand Attacks
Turn 2: Normal, and Lin either heals or Defends. Ryu & Rand attack, Sten Simoons
Turn 3: Auto (if the guy didn’t heal. If he did, be careful with Lin)
---------------------------------------------------------

Get Ring back
Rest up & save

Re: Walkthrough the Fire & Flames, with Breath of Fire II!

Post by Fionordequester »

Alright, so here's some party chat! From here on, I'll be releasing these a day or two after the main updates, as they're being updated. Will also upload them as videos, but, there's no need for you to go that far, I'm thinking... Anyway, characters have different dialogue inside their rooms than they do in the living room. I will be captioning BOTH instances of their dialogue, as needed!

...Also note that THIS is where the game tells you that this is where the thief is... Not Simafort itself :cripes: ...

PARTY CHAT (Sanamo & Granny join you):

Image Bosch: You owe me for this, Ryu... Whatever that old biddy's hawking better be worth giving away my room!

Image Rand: Remodeling? Fusion? I dunno from nothin' about those things... You might wanna leave this one to a professional carpenter...

Image Lin: A pretty face with a sexy pair of legs shows up and you forget all about us. Some friend you are!

Image Nina: Hmm? You don't look quite as baby-faced as you did the last time I saw you...

Image Sten (in the lobby): So, now you too know the joys and perils of dealing with the feminine persuasion... Isn't it fantastic?

Image Sten (in his room): Master, I've been watching you for a while now, and I've been wondering something... Not that I'm prying, but I'm dying to know... Who's more your type? Lin, or Nina? [choice doesn't matter] Ah, I see... I suspected as much... Oho, you sly devil, you!...

PARTY CHAT (Granny's lab is built):

Image Bosch: [Same as the last time]

Image Rand: You must have done the carpenter a good turn or two for him to go to this much trouble! This place is like a palace!

Image Lin (in the lobby): Hey, Ryu! Our little village is getting bigger and bigger! Maybe one day it'll be a major megalopolis! ...Did I really just say that?

Image Lin (in her room): Can I come with you this time? Can I? Can I? Can I?

Image Nina: If this town get's big enough, everybody in the world's gonna know about it. Maybe even your dad might come here?...

Image Sten: I'm not sure what I'm supposed to think about this 'fusion' business... But if it means I get to be combined with a cute chick like Sanamo, I think I'll take the risks!

Image Tapeta (in the lobby): Your town, it is tres bien! Is it possible that it might rival my own palace?

Image Tapeta (in his room): Are you leaving me behind? Oh, non, non, non! If I do not accompany you, you cannot cross the many rivers and lakes in your path! Take me with you, si'l vous plait!

PARTY CHAT (Tapeta is arrested):

Image Bosch: You say there's a thief holed up in the frog palace? That's gotta be the thief who framed me! I knew you'd pull it off, partner!

Image Rand: That Petape girl pisses the hell outta me! Where does she get off, ordering us around like that? ...Tapeta I don't mind so much, but doesn't he strike you as a bit...goofy?

Image Lin (in the lobby): Such a cold, damp place this castle is... Even the upper floors make me think of a dungeon... I can't wait to find that thief and get out of here!
[Context error; She's in Township when she says this]

Image Lin (in her room): That Tapeta guy freaks me out with the way he talks... Where the heck does all that 'merci' and 'si'l vous plait' moonspeak come from?

Image Nina: Being royalty is often more curse than blessing...even pretenders to the throne are a common occurrence.

Image Sten (in the lobby): From my experience, there are two kinds of princess in this world... The elegant, refined type, like our own Nina...and the boisterous, self-centered variety, like that Petape character.

Image Sten (in his room): Something smells about this 'Prince', and I doubt it's the worms on his breath...

PARTY CHAT (Nympho Fetch Quest):

Image Bosch: [Same as the last time]

Image Rand: Tapeta must've been really crazy over that witch to give her the Royal Signet...gives me the creeps, frankly...

Image Lin: I don't see how any normal person could go head-over-heels over a sicko like that witch Nympho... I guess that says something about Tapeta, doesn't it?

Image Nina: Sometimes I see the makings of a true leader in Tapeta... But I suppose it's just my imagination.

Image Sten: It's not strange at all to want to give everything you have to the woman you love. Believe me, I know...

Well, at least we can say goodbye to Simafort, right guys?

Part 12: Breath of Fire II Walkthrough—No Way Out! (Kuwadora)

PLOT POINTS (Gone forever, if done before recruiting Beretta.  She upgrades her wares for every 8 you get, up to a max of 24):
1. Breaking Nimufu's curse on Jean.
2. Recruiting Seso.
3. Acquire the dragon powers from the old man behind the waterfall.
4. Recruiting three residents and expanding Township.
5. Defeating Jailer.
6. Finishing the cooking contest in SimaFort.
7. Defeating Kuwadora/Quadra

KUWADORA/QUADRA AI (Weak to Ice; Cannot score critical hits; Always has 65535 Vigor when attacking):

Phase 1: Attack (62.5%), Attack All (12.5%), Wheee/Haaaa! [x3 DMG] (25%)
Phase 2-3: Attack (25%), Attack All (37.5%), Wheee/Haaaa! [x3 DMG] (37.5%)

If Quadra is in phase 1 and reaches 50% HP or less (850 HP), but more than 25% HP (412 HP), he will immediately end the turn and move to phase 2.
If Quadra is in phase 1 or 2 and reaches 25% HP or less (412 HP), he will immediately end the turn and move to phase 3.

Due to a bug, the intended phase 3 AI is never reached, and he uses his phase 2 AI instead.  His intended AI in phase 3 is:

Wheee/Haaaa! (37.5%)
Death (25%)
Attack All (12.5%)
Zombie Breath (12.5%)
Curse (12.5%)

QUADRA'S BUGS, AS EXPLAINED BY NITRODON (more technical):

The current phase is stored at $1460.  0 default, 6 at 25%-50%, and 128 under 25%.  That's supposed to feed into this section of code, which should decide which action list to choose based on the current phase:
C2/66C3: A2 1A 00     LDX #$001A
C2/66C6: AD 60 14     LDA $1460
C2/66C9: F0 04        BEQ $66CF
C2/66CB: E8           INX
C2/66CC: 10 01        BPL $66CF
C2/66CE: E8           INX
This sets the Z flag if $1460 is zero (i.e., in phase 1), and sets the N flag if $1460 is negative (i.e., in phase 3).  Then it skips both increment instructions if the Z flag is set.  Then (if in phase 2 or 3), it increments the value of X, then skips the following increment instruction if N is clear.

The programmer clearly thought this would work with the value of $1460, but incrementing the value of X will set the N flag if the new value of X is negative, and clear it otherwise, so the INX at 66CE is never run.

WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE INSTEAD:
C2/66C3: A2 1A 00     LDX #$001A
C2/66C6: AD 60 14     LDA $1460
C2/66C9: F0 04        BEQ $66CF
C2/66CB: E8           BPL $66CE
C2/66CC: 10 01        INX
C2/66CE: E8           INX

THE ROUTE:

Fort Nageur:
BUY: Up to x9 Vitamins, x9 Wisdom Seeds, & x19 Smoke Bombs
Rest up
Swap Rand & Ryu

---------------------------------------------------------
VS. Quadra (1650 HP): Defensive
Turn 1: Rand uses Wisdom Seed on Ryu, Sten Simoons, Lin attacks, Ryu uses Ice Whelp
Turn 2: Rand Defends, Sten & Lin gets their total damage up to 114 (but not too far over), Ryu uses Ice Whelp
Turn 3: Rand pre-emptively heals Ryu, Sten & Lin do what’s needed, Ryu uses Wisdom Seed on himself
Turn 4: Finish off Quadra
---------------------------------------------------------

Snag Solblade
Make a Ryu/Tapeta/Rand/Lin party
Snag Patty, Royal Crown, Breath Armor, & Iron Shield
Equip Solblade & weak armor to Ryu, and weak armor to Lin
Head near Capitan with Tapeta (enter forest from both sides to clear step counter).  Roll back to Newhaven from there (using Sten when needed).

Now then, time for more Party Chat! Note that Bosch says what he says regardless of if you remembered Patty or not.

PARTY CHAT (Simafort's done! The early-game is almost over!):

Image Bosch: So, now that you've found that bat-winged lady thief, we can get my name cleared, right? ...You...you didn't forget now, did you? Heh heh... I mean, you wouldn't forget your friend like this, right? Right?

Image Rand: Worms? Flies? Cockroaches? Bleah! What kind of warped people are these? If someone tried to feed me that crap, I'd call it torture, not a banquet!

Image Lin: Not a word outta you, Ryu! I'm gonna throw up if I catch a whiff of roach on your breath...*hoolp*

Image Nina (in the lobby): I've never been a picky eater, but I think I'll give anything calling itself 'gourmet' a pass from now on. I still feel slightly ill...

Image Nina (in her room): This strange, wonderful world of ours is full of different people with different tastes... I like to think I'm fairly open-minded, but to tell you the truth, the thought of eating cockroaches makes me want to puke!

Image Sten: What I don't understand is why anyone would want to pretend to be the prince of such a castle. The food is terrible, the women are all warts and no charm whatsoever... I really can't say I see the attraction.

Image Tapeta: By pretending to be my illustrious self, the foul imposter invited his own peril... For by being me, he opened himself up to the wrath of Fort Nageur's own enfant terrible, my dear sister Petape!

TRANSLATION MISHAPS:

Very liberal use of the word "kill", as well as the mention of demons... On the SNES.

Image

English and Japanese terms carelessly mashed together. "Kujira Manju" (くじらまんじゅう) are "whale buns", a type of Japanese delicacy. Of course, the translators changed "buns" to "cakes"... So this is like calling something "whale cake cakes", or "whale bun buns".

More ellipses than your typical fanfiction.

5. Defeating Jailer.
6. Finishing the cooking contest in SimaFort.
7. Defeating Kuwadora.
8. Finding out about the Gate incident at the Rangers' Guild.
9. Defeating Munmar.

ENEMY AI:
H.Crabs/Scissor Hermits:
65/128 defend
Otherwise, 33/256 Freeze/Iceblast, 223/256 attack
[This translates to about a 6.5% chance of Iceblast]

J.Fish/Sea Jellies:
Run away with probability 3/8 (turn 1-4) or 100% (turn 5-7)
Otherwise, 1/64 defend, 63/64 attack

[The probability of running away is intended to be 1/16 (turn 1), 1/8 (turn 2), 1/4 (turn 3), or 3/8 (turn 4+). But, the turn number was capped in the wrong direction before looking this value up. They're also intended to have a 65/256 chance of casting Cure 1 on turns where they're not running or defending. However, the upper byte of the Y register is cleared before this probability and spell can be read, so the probability is read as zero.]

Cuttlecbs/Hermit Squids:
1/64 defend
Otherwise, cast Def-Up/Protect with probability 100% (turn 1), 5/8 (turn 2), 1/4 (turn 3), or 0 (turn 4+)
[If you get the initiative, the first enemy action occurs on turn 2. If the intended target of Protect is dead, the squids will instead attack a random party member.]

Fastmen/Hustlers (50% crit rate; Lacks the AP to cast anything but Lightning):
1/64 defend
Otherwise, 33/256 to cast a spell, 223/256 attack

Spell list: Fireblast, Bolt X/Valhalla, Blizzard, S.Boom/Lightning

G.Shaker/Earth Shaker:
1/64 defend
Otherwise, cast 8.0/Quake with probability 17/256 (if over 50% HP), 33/256 (if over 25% and at most 50%), 65/256 (if over 12.5% and at most 25%), or 129/256 (if 12.5% HP or under)
Otherwise attack
[These always come alone. Quake will not OHKO anyone, and you'll kill it with Auto before a 2nd comes]

V.Heads/Shotgun Heads:
If any monster is under 75% HP, Cure 2 on whichever monster is missing the most HP. If tied, choose the last monster slot. Attack, if no AP.
Otherwise, 1/64 defend, 63/64 attack

MUNMAR AI:
Turn 4n+1: Horror (puts everyone to sleep)
All other turns: attack

THE ROUTE:

Overworld:
Hop to Whale Cape (pop into beach to reset encounters)
—x2 H.Crabs/Scissor Hermits: You outspeed, so use Whelp + Bomb/Simoon + Thunder/Jolt, so you don't face more than one Iceblast.

Sten: Silver Knife, Iron Band, Breath Armor, Bronze Helm
--------------------------------

Whale Tunnel:
Auto everything, except for...

--------------------------------
Scissor Hermit & x2 Hermit Squids: Jolt + Simoon the Scissor Hermit while whacking the squids

X3 Land Lizards: Defensive Formation. Ryu Whelps one, Lin hits another, Sten Simoons the last one, and Rand Jolts.

X2 Shotgun Heads: Hit one once, so both Rejuvinate that one on the next round. Attack the OTHER one in 2nd round, so they Rejuvinate him in the 3rd round. Then, for that 3rd Round, use Jolt + Ryu & Lin attack while Sten either heals or Defends. The two Shotgun Heads will run out of AP, and one will be injured by Ryu & Rand. 4th Round, finish off the injured one with Lin & Flare. That will leave just one more!

X2 Shotgun Heads & Scissor Hermit: Jolt + Ryu & Lin melee on the Hermit. Then, do regular strat.

X2 Shotgun Heads & Land Lizard: Defensive Formation. Melee on Land Lizard while Rand Jolts. Then, do regular strat.
--------------------------------

1st Room: Use Smoke Bomb
3rd Room: Use Smoke Bomb
5th Room: Go left into, then out of, bottom room to reset encounters, Use Smoke Bomb, go into the left room, and snag Gold Armor (Ryu)
