Status of Treasure

Post by Zeether »

Sometime last year or so, there was a rumor according to a guy from 8-4 that Treasure was done making new games and basically only exists to keep their IPs in check and not much else. Was this ever confirmed? Are they just under contract work or something? I vaguely recall hearing about them doing work on something minor but ever since their Steam port of Ikaruga and the news that they had a PC title in mind they just went silent.

No need for rumors, just look at their list of developed games: nothing new since S&P2, almost 7 years without creation.
We didn't wait all that time to declare Cave dead as a developer, so...

Treasure's last game is Gaist Crusher, released in Dec. 2013.

Even so, it's a contract for a Capcom IP, and that's OP's point.
I too haven't seen any real Treasure 'house' games other than ports since then (S&P2)

OP's question was if they've been doing anything period, not if they've been making stuff that's non-contract.

To be fair, Cave has been declared dead numerous times since the early 2000's :P Pretty much every time they revealed a new shmup. "People instead of Spaceships? Cave are dead!" "Selling games using sexy ads? Cave are dead!" "HORIZONTAL!? CAVE ARE DEAD!"
I bet people miss those days now.

Well that's not how I understood something 'new' that's not managing their IPs nor subcontracting.

Anyway.
Frankly I don't consider a company that hasn't released a game of their own in something like 5 year or even longer to be alive as a developer.
Okay for Cave people will tell about Hello Kitty Puzzle, Don Paccin, Mahou Otome, blah blah yay.
To me they'll be alive again when I see a new console, or arcade, or pc game. Last time was almost 5 years ago in 2012.
Or do people need to see the skeleton cleaned of all its rotting flesh to finally admit it's dead ? I wonder...

I thought Cave died of renal failure, judging by that extremely dark urine they put out towards the end. 3;

I'm pretty sure if you extract one of the patties from a Big Mac and cut it open a bunch of polygons will in fact spill out while creepy music plays.

Haha, yes. That's the only conceivable outcome.

Maegawa does the occassional interview, seems slightly optimistic albeit very quiet about the future (such as the last questions in this interview https://venturebeat.com/2018/06/08/inte ... l-forever/). There is also the twitter account that have occasional live streams. But it's a bit sad they only have the license to Ikaruga and RSG and maybe one or two more games.

And apparently their heads are in the clouds about the licensing fees those 20+ year old games should warrant. At least I read that somewhere. Take it w/ a grain of salt.

Interesting. Do you or anyone else here know the status of Hideyuki Suganami?
It's over 10 years since he had a role in a Treasure game iirc, planning for Sin & Punishment: Star Successor.
I've read he left Treasure, but has he appeared in any interview or is there any info what he's doing? He seems to keep a really low profile for making such popular and eccentric games as Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier.
The brief stories I read about him and Alien Soldier made it seem he's quite a funny, passionate character. Feels a little bit like a raw talent that we didn't see enough of.

'head in the clouds' tracks with my limited knowledge of Japanese licensing demands.

Maybe it's for the best. Any sequels with limited involvement of the original teams would likely not live up to expectations. Treasure have already gone on to influence so much in modern games. Also doesn't preclude the (unlikely) possibility of a future Treasure shooter,

I read that S&P2 was basically developed because Nintendo reached out and specifically contracted them to do it. Likewise Microsoft with the 360 HD version of Radiant Silvergun. I know this has been the case throughout Treasure's history (aka I imagine Mcdonalds and Steep Slope Sliders were each contract jobs) but that makes it that much longer since Treasure decided to develop and release something of their own volition along the lines of the original releases of Dynamite Heady/Alien Soldier/Radiant Silvergun/Ikaruga etc... basically all their legendary titles.

I think Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga are the only IPs Treasure actually owns themselves.

McDonald's Treasure Adventure was SEGAs request. The story goes that the founding Treasure members were tired of making sequels for Konami and impressed by the Mega drive processor, so Treasure joined SEGA to create Gunstar Heroes. SEGA then asked them to do McDonald's. Treasure actually finished McDonald's first but delayed the release because they wanted their first game to be original and SEGA even let them put the Treasure logo on the title screen of the first game. Repeatedly Treasure stated the purpose was to make original innovative games. Ironic how their last string of games were all licensed job-for-hire, sequels, and re-releases. A final Burger King game would have been the fitting finale. Love them though.

I thought the same at the time. I don't remember where I heard it, but I heard the same story probably around the very early 00s, how Treasure wanted to focus on original IPs rather than licenses and sequels, and it really stuck with me. But at the end of the day they've made as many of those as other companies, if not even more. Some of their sequels are pretty neat though.

Makes sense though, that they probably weren't too keen on making that McDonald's game. It's a really awful game, so they probably didn't put much effort into it. It's probably the Japanese game to feel the most like a European Amiga platformer with almost all of the quirks that comes with.

I think when Treasure said that, they meant that they wanted to avoid copy-and-paste sequels. Not that Konami really had many of those, so I have no idea what they might have been referring to. Even Gradius III is substantially different from the previous game, to say nothing of the games before that.

They were doing Castlevania and Contra games for Konami and were offered to do a Turtles game at the time when they were coming up with ideas for Gunstar Heroes. So even if you don't copy-paste, you are still limited in what you can do if you do a Castlevania or Contra game, at least if you do it for another company. Reading up on the English interviews I got the impression Maegawa was fed up with the sequels trend seemingly going on in the late 80s, early 90s so he had quite strong feelings against it back then, even when the possibility of sequels to Gunstar Heroes and such were brought up, and then in late 90s he softened his view a bit and said if a sequel is to be made it has to have the original staff crew (such as bringing back Suganami to make Gunstar Super Heroes).

Surprised to still see these "treasure worked on all of these games before forming treasure" speculations, yet it's not too long ago I last time saw someone claiming both Hard Corps and Rocket Knight came from Treasure people, even though both of those games were developed after Treasure was formed.

I've seen no signs of any Treasure employees filling any major roles in any Castlevania or Contra games. Honestly, the only Konami game that seems to feature any relevant constellation of future Treasure people would be Bucky O'Hare (the NES one), but you can easily see how that game would segue into Gunstar Heroes, too.
