Sega Genesis must haves

Post by Super Mega C »

I started playing a lot of my old games again this weekend as is my wont when the new stuff seems to lose it's luster, and I've come to the conclusion that my genesis collection is lacking so I'd like some suggestions for fleshing it out. Please no popular or overly expensive stuff. I'm sure we would all like to have copies of musha. I'm looking for fun but cheap games that I can find fairly easy.

Here's what I have so far:
sega 6-pak: golden axe, sonic 1, columns, revenge of shinobi, super hang on, streets of rage
sonic 2
sonic 3
Two Crude Dudes
El Viento
Elemental Master
Fatal Labyrinth
Contra hard corps
Traysia
Streets of rage 2
Raiden Trad
Ranger X
mazin saga mutant fighter
Rocket Knight
Steel Empire
Gaiares
Lightning force
Ecco tides of time
insector x
arcus odyssey
mega turrican
last battle
kid chameleon
storm lord
phantasy star 2,3, & 4
Flashback
Gunstar Heros
Shining in the darkness
Target Earth
Splatter house 3
Button masher extrordinaire

Shooters:
Thunder Force II/III
Bio-Hazard Battle
Burning Force (on-rails)
Forgotten Worlds (not totally accurate, but great anyways)
Phelios

Platformer:
Sparkster (if you like RKA, somewhat different style, more emphasis on rocket pack)
Castle of Illusion (simple, but nice graphics/music)
RISTAR
Decapattack (underrated, I swear)
Chiki Chiki Boys (lesser known Sega/Capcom conversion, kind of like Willow)

Action:
Shinobi III (the slickest)
Castlevania: Bloodlines (also excellent, underrated)
Strider
Alisia Dragoon
Gain Ground
Rolling Thunder 3

Strategy/Action/RPG:
Beyond Oasis (best looking Genesis game)
Landstalker
Shining Force 1/2 (not sure if the price is right on these)

You have to get Gleylancer if at all possible. It is one of best Genesis shmups ever made.

Okay you won't find Gleylancer or MUSHA cheaply or easily but THEY ARE WORTH IT. I actually found a new copy of MUSHA for 2.50 at an EB though. The glory days of Genesis collecting taking a backseat to the expensive hobby of SNES collecting are over for the most part.

Good job getting Target Earth though.

Target Earth was one of the most difficult games I played on the Genesis. Very fun though.

I recommend Trouble Shooter. The US version sells for cheap at places like Ebgames. It's not a very well known game and it's extremely good.

Other games I recommend:
Flicky
Strider (can be found for cheap at EBgames)
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Dynamite Headdy (Ebgames.com is selling it for $4.99)
Championship Pro Am (sweet port of RC Pro Am NES with 6 cars)
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Aladdin
Samurai Shodown (very good port from the arcade, despite missing Earthquake)
Shadow Dancer
Space Harrier 2
Whip Rush

For those unaware, Target Earth is more commonly known as Assault Suit Leynos. Fantastic game, I don't have a genesis anymore, but I kept that cart.

Most good games have already been mentioned, but here's a few more:

Warsong (AKA Langrisser 1)
Hellfire
Decap Attack (Pseudo-sequel to Psycho Fox on the SMS)
Granada
Crusader of Centy (Zelda knockoff)

And I can't recommend MUSHA enough. One of the best vertical shooters ever. I believe I got my copy at a used CD store for 4 dollars, best 4 bucks I ever spent. You might also want to consider getting a Sega CD addon. Robo Aleste and Bari Arm make it worth getting one alone. If you like RPGs, there's a ton of good ones for it like Vay, Popful Mail, Shining Force CD, Dark Wizard, Lunar 1 and 2, and so on.

There's also Herzog Zwei, one of Tecnosoft brightest moments.

And, since you have Flashback, you could consider Another World too.

Sword of Vermillion: I thought this one was sort of dull for an RPG, but I didn't play it too much.

Alien Soldier: Expect to pay between $150 and $200 dollars for this one.

Alisia Dragoon: I like this one, but I don't know if the average gamer would. It's sort of like the Valis games, except the weapon system is more interesting. Speaking of which, Valis II and III are pretty good.

Light Crusader: This one gets mixed reviews. It's sort of like Landstalker, but not quite as good. I'll tell you one thing, it's a damn ugly looking game!

Sorcerian: Did this one get a US release on the Genesis? I don't if you'll be able to fully enjoy the game if you get the Japanese version. The only US version I've seen was on the PC.

Underrated game, but yeah... definitely look for Landstalker first.

I think Atomic Runner, Fantasia and Marvel Land are all pretty bad. I'd also avoid Vectorman 2 unless you really like the first one.

Forget about Outrun 2019 and go for the original Outrun. 2019 really really sucked bad. The genesis just could not handle the gameplay concepts the creators were trying to get across.

Also this is my opinion but Herzog Zwei is not really worth it if you don't have someone around to play it with. The singleplayer was completely average while the multi was excellent.

What? Nobody recommended Zombies Ate My Neighbors?

Also, excellent strategy titles: Powermonger and Master of Monsters.

Ranger-X (Ex-Ranza)
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and or Knuckles (very popular and Super Mega C has Sonic 3)
Gunstar Heroes (Super Mega C has this game)
Gleylancer (rare and EXTREMELY expensive)
Eliminate Down (ditto)
Gaiares
Alien Soldier (ditto)
Shining Force 1 and 2 (the first one should be cheap if you're lucky, but 2 definatly goes close to the 50 dollar range)
Out of this World (Another World)
Ecco 1 and 2
Streets of Rage 2
Super Mega C specifically asked for games that aren't rare. How come every time someone asks not to list something, people post it anyway?

Here are some more I recommend:
The Lost Vikings
Desert Strike
Jungle Strike

Eh, a good chunk of those games aren't rare at all.

Still, this question gets asked a lot. Silly really. Just go to the Xenocide files, then open another window to EBgames and go through their list of Genesis titles. You should be able to pick up most of the Toaplan games, Thunderforce IV (Lightening Force), Gaiares (Gaiarse), Steel Empire, BioHazard Battle and a ton of others for $3 a piece or less. Of coruse, they won't be in beautiful condition, but you'll have a ton of games for little or no cash.

Yes, you'll still need Musha, but that can wait.

Some games like Sagaia are 6 dollars and some are 5 dollars, but I agree that a ton of good games can be found for cheap at EB. Heck, last time I checked, they had Dynamite Headdy for $4.99. They have Trouble Shooter for $4.99 too.

I think Light Crusader gets exactly as much credit as it deserves. Landstalker (which is good, but not great) is roughly one zillion times better.

As for Chiki Chiki Boys... fun game, but ridiculously easy. I prefer playing it in MAME since it's more challenging.

I 2nd the above games. Decapattack is definitely underrated - one of the best platformers in the Genesis library.

Also, don't forget Lightening Force, aka ThunderForce 4. Best shooter on the genny, period.
