7. If you watch porn, it must be hentai. No disgusting 3d pig girls. Only pure 2d waifus.

In all seriousness, I think random artists/writers have put it best: Fuck inspiration/motivation, at least if that's all you've got. I do agree with the /r/eddit people here - you do need motivation; in fact you need dedication/work ethic to keep up your motivation. You should ask whether "I want to learn Japanese for Famicom games" means you'll take this seriously enough. I don't want to oversell the difficulty of learning a language - you can certainly pick up this or that if you just keep looking at things long-term, but you won't understand enough to get dialogue unless people are only using stilted catch phrases, and doing it halfassed will quickly leave you too old to learn quickly. Goodness knows I've only figured out a few things by sheer repetition, but I'm nowhere near fluency...and I actually had some formal training.
I'd personally agree with many who say that learning Japanese for Famicom RPGs is really setting one's sights low and you'll probably miss some cultural reference or other that you'd be better placed to understand if you were more widely read. Still, you have to start somewhere, and it's not bad to have a goal.

Two problems with that:
1. They're not official.
2. How am I supposed to play those on an actual Famicom?

Re: Need to learn Japanese ASAP for Famicom games
Depending on the games in question, multicarts may not be "official" either. And believe me, there isn't much value in doing things the "official" way for the sake of it, nobody's checking you for your gamer cred. You'll probably come closer to the intended experience if you play a translated rom than if you struggle through the original language version with a cursory understanding of the language.

Yeah, but the multicarts have the game code in their unmodified glory, while these fan translations are hacked versions.Shepardus wrote:Depending on the games in question, multicarts may not be "official" either. There is absolutely no reason to care if a hacked version is "not official" if the only thing changed is text and it's an accurate translation.
You probably won't be able to afford the "real deal" anyway for these super duper niche rare games.

Alright there. Well multicarts are not that "official" compared to the actual releases, but hey, feel free to do things the hard way. (like learning a whole other language just to play the "official" way )atheistgod1999 wrote:Yeah, but the multicarts have the game code in their unmodified glory, while these fan translations are hacked versions.Shepardus wrote:Depending on the games in question, multicarts may not be "official" either. Changing text is not the same as changing the game.
And why are you so concerned about playing the official way if you're considering using an Analogue NT?
Your conviction to the official way is flawed.

There are people who make custom carts.
Otherwise play it on an emulator, and hook up the emulator display to your tv while full screened.
The experience of the game will be 100% the same, and you will not have wasted ten billion dollars and 10 years of your life learning Japanese and tracking down the games.

Re: Need to learn Japanese ASAP for Famicom games
There are cycle-accurate NES/Famicom emulators now aren't there? You're unlikely to ever notice any difference from the original hardware, save the satisfaction and/or trouble of dealing with physical carts.
Re: Need to learn Japanese ASAP for Famicom games
Bzzt, wrong. Many pirate carts have done some modifications to the game, like sprite replacements or added lives. The worst offender is SMB2jp. Most pirate carts lack the title logo, or Luigi plays the same as Mario, or the winds in later stages don't work correctly.atheistgod1999 wrote:Yeah, but the multicarts have the game code in their unmodified glory
Also the build quality of pirate carts is generally shit. The plastic feels like it can crack under peer pressure.
So yes, there absolutely is value in going the official route. I would only touch cheap pirate carts like this with a hammer.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

This sentiment is always so irritating. Why does one reason have more merit than the other?mvsfan wrote:i think if you just want to learn a language to play games its kind of a waste. there should be some other reason to learn it. if you just want to play games, learn how to use an Ips patch.
Regarding translations: Maybe if you only look at major console games, but there's still plenty of stuff that is never going to get a fan translation. Oh boy, another mediocre Famicom RPG. Great.

Re: Need to learn Japanese ASAP for Famicom games
I'm almost done with my 1-month beginner's Japanese course and decided to see how much I've learned so far by watching an anime undubbed and unsubbed.
I watched the first episode of Fairy Tail for the first time (no, don't have anything better) and was actually able to understand a few things, like asking the price of the card, the purple-haired guy mentioning friends, "fairy tail's key", the cat saying " Yes!", and a few other words.
Another thing is that before, it sounded like a bunch of random sounds at a rate too fast to keep up with. Now, I can actually tell which words are which, but I just don't know what they mean. I can also now keep up with all the different sounds.

I miss drauch, hope he's doing ok out there. I chuckle every time I notice his current sig in old threads. Were I to glance down and notice that furry hedgehog gagging on my cockerel, I'd look away and pay no mind as he took a one-way trip to flavour town, indeed. I care that little about Sanic. Come at me Chris-Chans.

Re: Need to learn Japanese ASAP for Famicom games
I'm done with the Japanese course. My Japanese teacher (who, by the way, grew up in Japan and speaks perfect, accent-less English (and learned English just to understand American pop music, so my reason for learning Japanese seemed pretty legit to her )) said that this would work, but I want other opinions:
I was thinking of watching anime undubbed and unsubbed, and looking up the words they are saying now that I know proper structure and it doesn't sound like everyone's on crack anymore. Over time, I might start memorizing more and more words as I hear them over and over again. Eventually, I might know a good amount of Japanese.
Will this work?

Yes. That sort of thing is a good way of extending a language once you have the basics nailed down. You won't learn squat without frequent exposure.

Watch Naruto unsubbed and undubbed and practice the jutsu hand signs while repeating the phrases from the anime, it increases your inner chi and allows you to absorb the language fasteratheistgod1999 wrote:I'm done with the Japanese course.
