Not FM synth, but still an awesome collection of Alexander Brandon's MOD compositions from his Demoscene days. For those who don't recognize the name, he composed the soundtracks for Deus Ex, Unreal, and Jazz Jackrabbit 2, among other great works.

Damn, the Super Fantasy Zone version of the FZ boss music is one of the most bangin' MegaDrive tracks I have heard! It's like a mix between Doom's E1M1 music and Germaniac by Die Krupps

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-I-WkPkdqTY

Why isn't FM EBM a genre?

I need an audio-only site to stream vgm from at work. Anyone has any suggestion?

Can't go on YouTube (gonna miss Dustin O'Dell channel here), not because of bandwith usage, but because since it's video it could open the door to "he's watching videos on YouTube all day! Instead of working!" bullshit.
I listen mostly to FM synth music, so if the site only has FM synth stuff then I should be covered. I'd like for it to have like ALL FM synth OST on there, ideally. But if I have to resort to using 2-3 sites in tandem to cover everything FM than that could be manageable too I guess.

I sometime listen to other soundchips/Redbook Audio vgm OST so if it has that on there that's a plus

By the way I had a great time listening to Gleylancer OST yesterday.

Mainly PC-88 and PC-98 music, I believe. Recommended by KAI.

Awesome, thanks soprano1 :D

Now I just need one that has an extensive GEN/MD Library with good sound, and I'll pretty much be covered!

I forgot who linked this on the Shmups Discord. Maybe Squire?

Either way, it deserves to be in this thread:

Good stuff, sounds like the missing link between Raiden's melancholy rock and Raiden Fighters' much harder-edged electronic sound.

Rad flyer too! Image

One sweep of MD/Genesis tracks I like or find remarkable for one reason or another; I've taken into account different directions and hope that there are also some lesser known ones among them. A good amount of them was penned by western composers too.
I took the liberty of simply listing them tacitly in no intentional or particular order for your own interpretation and/or listening pleasure, the composers are indicated by parenthesis. :)

Gods — Highscore Tune (John Foxx aka Nation 12)
The Ooze — Stage 5-A/B / Plague Factory (Howard Drossin)
Alien 3 — Main Title Part 2 (Matt Furniss)
Alien 3 — Stage 2 (")
Star Cruiser — Main Theme (Toshiya Yamanaka)
Batman — Streets of Gotham City (Naoki Kodaka)
Batman — Sky over Gotham City (")
Superman — Round 4 (Kenji Yamazaki, Junichi Ueda, Hiroshi Tsukamoto)
Superman — Round 2 (")
Battle Mania: Daiginjō — Hachimaki Please (Shigenori Masuko, Yoko Suzuki, Fumito Tamayama)
Sol-Deace — Cilius Moon / Stage 2 (Motoi Sakuraba)
Adventures Of Batman and Robin — Space Boss (Jesper Kyd)
Panorama Cotton — The Great Gallery / Stage 3 (Kenichi Hirata)
Sparkster — Stage 2 (Michiru Yamane, Akira Yamaoka)
Time Trax (unreleased game) — Stages 1, 3, 8 (Tim Follin)
Devilish (AKA Bad Omen) — Stage 2 - Clock Tower (Hitoshi Sakimoto)
Ristar — Greedy Game (Theme of Kaiser) (Tomoko Sasaki)

Being aware that Midnight Resistance was already mentioned in this thread, I'm going to repost it with the excuse that the old link by LordHypnos expired in the meantime (and because it's wicked good!)
Midnight Resistance — Flood of Power (Azusa Hara et al., Genesis/MD conversion: Hitoshi Sakimoto, Shōgo Sakai)
Midnight Resistance — Home, Disappointment and Counterattack (")

Last but not least, one outlier (but still FM synth!):
Mouryou Senki Madara (FC) — MA·DA·RA (Map 2 Main BGM) (Konami Kukeiha Club)

Thanks, I forgot this thread existed. For those truly serious about vgm, MSX is KING. This OPNB cart has a super clean DAC and design. Sounds much cleaner then my real NeoGeos. My MSX VGM setup is only half finished as this shit is real expensive. But so worth it.

yeah just saw that you got an OPNB card. cool! where was this one used again? some MSX games? and optional PC-88 soundcard too?

MSX looks so versatile, it has a YM2151 card too IIRC. are you playing VGM files from your PC to the card, or directly from an MSX to the card?

OPNB is the NeoGeo sound chip. VGMPlay is able to make it backwards compatible with standard OPN. MSX hardware is like nothing else, it can handle up to 8 external cartridges at once.

I have an SD interface, Fat16 is supported, so 2gb partitions and simple drag and drop files from modern pc. You do need a lot of RAM though. 256kb is enough for OPL2 DOS games, but you really need at least 1mb for OPL3. NeoGeo files are huge, 4mb is recommended.

Take a look at the page here to see just how versatile MSX is. My dream is to get a Makoto (OPNA), but only about a dozen were made. Hopefully a new clone will come soon, as OPNA and OPNB grants OPNBB support. Which means Darius 2, Ninja Warriors, and Warrior Blade....

This thread needs more TAITO!
Anyway, more tunes played via real deal Yamaha chips on my MSX.
If you aren't a big fan of Taito, I still highly recommend Night Striker.
Really kickass music for a game very few have ever seen in person.

Fillmore from Actraiser but on PC-88. Apparently Koshiro composed it there first.

IIRC, the Yuzo Koshiro Best Of collections have full PC-88 sound source versions of not just Actraiser, but Revenge of Shinobi too. Lemme refresh my memory...

Oh right, PC-98. Here's the album if it's of any interest.

Oh hey, didn't know about this one. I'm guessing those are the same Actraiser tracks. I could swear at least the first Bare Knuckle's PC-88 ver is in his discography somewhere too. EDIT: Yep, here we go.

Great collections, got 'em somewhere on an HDD. Sleeve art by Buichi Terasawa (Cobra), no less.

My AudioWave (MSX-Audio) cartridge came in today.
It uses the Yamaha Y8950 chip, which is OPL+ADPCM in one chip.
Tested it out with some classic badass SNK.
Victory Road is truly one of the most badass games ever made.

Even post-internet, Dogosoken's OST is one I'd call underrated - I was stunned at its quality, I'd never seen it mentioned anywhere. Any fans of fiery miitant hard rock ala Yuge-Uemura & GamaDelic will love this stuff.

> Cruel Killers (power chord barrage reminds me of Bloody Wolf's opening motorcycle rampage - also, one for the Evocative VGM Titles thread!)
> Run To The Field (fiery! IKARI, even! traversing the hellish battlefield, cutting down fiends left and right! Image)
> Count Down (the only stage BGM used twice, in succession at that, classy pick for the tough final stretch)

Testing out my new Taito B17Z2016B (YM2610B) OPNB-B chips.
Special chips made specifically for Taito, they are the same as normal YM2610 (OPNB)
chips, but have 2 extra FM channels, so 6 instead of 4.

Direct comparison of Puzzle Bobble tunes for the common NeoGeo (OPNB) version and the original Taito B-System (OPNB-B) version. The B-System version was only released in Japan and has much richer audio thanks to the OPNB-B chip having 6 FM channels. (NeoGeo only has 4) Though the Neo did add some stereo effects. Recorded from real chips as always!

Really interesting stuff. I was reading up on the Taito/SNK version differences just the other day. Love how they translated that characteristically warbly ZTT sound to Neo.

I keep forgetting Chopper I exists, haha. Seems superunknown even around these parts, and just like Datsugoku, I was blown away by its OST's quality. SNK's mastery of the 80s commando action aesthetic is rivalled only by DECO and Konami. Image
