Yeah I played the shit out of SF IV, but V blows for many reasons. Like the main mechanics.

Hopefully 6 fixes the crush counter system, by getting rid of it. Also half the cast is shit.

I dunno, MK11 at least looks like it has a decent story mode. Given that most of my FTG playing would either be single-player, or a bunch of buds dicking around after a few beers, it might fit the bill for me.

I've been enjoying Guilty Gear Strive.

They're definitely doing something, uhhhhhh, different with the damage. Basic hit confirms can deal like 60-80% damage, though due to the ranges and abare involved a lot of pokes and stray hits don't lead into that damage while still doing heavy chunks. It's like they took the damage scaling of a 3 person marvel style fighter and applied it to a 1 on 1 game, but without Marvels easy abare/confirm-full-combos-from-anything style.

Time will tell whether it ultimately ends up being a dumb fucking party game or something truly lasting. Notably I'm having a good time learning it and a lot of my friends (even non-fighter friends) are getting into it (though that's partially due to the GGPO support).

Guilty Gear is good and not weird at all you normie!!!!

Most recent game I've enjoyed besides that is Granblue Fantasy Versus (fantasy themed weapon fighter with an oldschool grounded footsies driven approach). Sadly hampered by lack of netcode. Blazblue Cross Tag is a good answer to Marvels brand of silliness and jank. Under Night is also great, as is a few of the more obscure poverty games like Nitroplus Blasters and Arcana Heart.

I still also play ye old fighters on netplay too every now and then. Vampire Savior, Marvel 2, etc.

AW HECK YEAH

SNK entering into partnership with exA-Arcadia. Samurai Shodown V Perfect will be the first official Arcade port (and its first time in arcades). exA to publish many other SNK games on their Arcade system:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHolyKXAmZc

If exA could find a way to get that hardware down to consumer pricing, that would be pretty cool. KoF XV seems like it would be a shoo-in for an arcade release, if the platform can do it justice.

But other post-Neo Geo, post-Atomiswave SNK titles which never saw the arcade like KoF XI, KoF XIII, the two Ultimate Match titles ('98 & 2002), SNK Heroines & SamSho 2019 would fit the bill.

I like how ASW buffed everyone in Strive. Yeah, there were a few things nerfed [man, I already miss May's far slash, that was a nice "man, thinking is hard, let me just space this the tiniest bit and bam, done, ez, maybe I'll dolphin or 6P if I'm feeling feisty" button], but every balance decision seems to have been made to encourage players to have more options, make more decisions, and be more aggressive.

I really can't wait until I can get my main computer fixed so I can play properly, bleh.
I can't really go online because of performance issues on my laptop -- nothing like a fight starting at full speed, and then thermal throttling dropping things down to sub-50fps [providing a miserable experience for both players].
This thing is ancient, and has no business running Strive, so I can't blame it for running badly [this is with the potato mod installed], but it comes so tantalizingly close to playable.

Guess I'll go play 02UM or something in the meantime, haha.
Playing Xrd against a friend a week ago reminded me that delay netcode is trash -- yeah, rollback is a pain to implement because no one designs their game to be able to jump to arbitrary states unless they know they're implementing rollback [or the game is running in an emulator, which supports that just by virtue of emulators usually being designed to take savestates, which makes 80% or so of the work be already done], but being unable to actually react to things because you suddenly had the delay go from 2f to 6f [or worse!] is unfathomably awful. I'll take 10 frames "oh, he teleported" rollback over that any day of the week.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Game Newton did another one of those Special FT10 events except this time for ST.

https://youtu.be/wLgRumXPNKI

This set in particular is really tense. Totally unbalanced match up in Dhalsim v. Ken. Poor Ken player has about as much chance against Dhalsim as a Zangief would. Yet Japan is full of those crazy character specialists who can even make a weaker character like Ken have a fighting chance, since they've been playing these bad matchups for 30 years lol.

I wonder just how meta they might go, considering he seems to have hired Alba's stylist. Glad to see him back at any rate. Always had a soft spot for his bludgeoning rushdown and mutually abusive MAX moves, like that bullshit [BFBFBFBF] Orochi-lite fullscreener you've gotta jerk off your arcade stick for. Just the notion of a blatant Tetsuo lift popping up out of nowhere is charmingly emblematic of the whole, uh, situation surrounding KOF01, as well... I still recall the "Wait what? They couldn't have" moment, seeing Power Is Losing Control in a 240p Quicktime clip from MMcafe. Image

SNKP: "Yeah and we hired Tetsuo's VA as well, suck on that you motherfuckers." *stood on desk waving hog madly* And then the crank wore off. (Jesus, twenty years on. Time... to die yeah fuck that shit, let's go for forty. Image)

That tormented "MOEROOO!!!" scream on "Moon" (can't recall what it was renamed to for 2002UM) sounds so good. Image Love how they kept his enraged mannerisms, the unhinged yelling and twisted footing as he mutilates himself and the enemy alike. They should dirty the arm up a little though, bit too clean.

Maniacal setup is rad though. Doubled over in agony and all set to go Class Of 1999 on some poor prick's dome. Image

It's been like twenty years.
Admittedly though, no one I know IRL plays K9999 though, and I never saw him that much online when I went on Fightcade more in OG KOF02. I've also seen like two Nameless players in 02UM. Ever.
But hell, he looks so cool, and I'm so glad they brought him back [or at least, someone who looks enough like him without still just being Tetsuo -- the name change has me feeling like they want him to be legally distinct in some way even if it's blatantly the same guy] and not that way lamer Nameless fellow.

On an unrelated note, I'm really wishing I picked up BlazBlue Central Fiction on PC back when it was $6 or so during the autumn sale.
I doubt it's going to go back to being quite so cheap for a while now that they're adding rollback to it [it's $20 now though], but here's hoping. I really wish they'd give Xrd this treatment, but something tells me that it'd be more work, and ASW also definitely wants to remind people that the BlazBlue brand is still a thing.

It's been interesting seeing beloved 80s/90s IPs approaching thirty/forty year marks - even if that's small beans compared to Golden Age comics and toons reaching centenaries (or passing them, like good ol' Felix Teh Cat), it's still novel territory for our little corner of the world.

On one hand, gettin' older. 3; On the other, feels kinda quaint seeing people freak out over Shermie.

I half-wonder if the "SILBER" decal on Krohnen's arm is an Easter egg for the infamous Buriki One badman and KOFXI alum... Krohnen's name even sounds Germanic, too. Then again, silver bullets, gun arm, maybe just a little nod. Gonna bust a cap in Jon Talbain, clearly.

At any rate, I'd love to see Silber return to 3D after his sharp XI sprites. Br00tal chap, even by Buriki's rather hardcore standard. Man, this is taking me back... no Baos or Hinakos, or quite frankly, Mais. Wait! Don't shoot! I main Saigado Team! Image (Bao/Mai/Andy >_>) But when a Mas Oyama motherfucker punches you full-blast in the jaw or solar plexus, you better not be a little kid or a loli or a broad! Is be physics yo Image)

(RIP Rob Python's whole career 3;)

I'd have brought back the bandit spirit of '01, and stuck a big fat "R.I.P. YAMAGATA" on there.

Actually, damn... the leather n' decals aesthetic is 100% bosozoku, arguably putting him even nearer Tetsuo than K9999 was. :o Maybe they're cheekier than I'm givin' 'em credit for.  Pre-crash SNK always knowing how to get close without getting burnt - #18/Mary, Polnareff/Beni, Soujiro/Chris... the last even paid back via Shishio/Genjuro. It does my heart good, seeing 'em going strong with KOF and Sam Sho. Just wish we could get a decent STG/run-gun now and then. Although, pretty much all of the Neo's greatest were by third parties (ADK, Nazca, Saurus, Aicom/Yumekobo, Video System, Psikyo, the ex-IREM Last Resort dudes... who also worked on KOF '94, hm).

As much as I dislike modern KOFs, Krohnen hype. Love how they referenced the Kusanagiiii intro from vanilla 02, as Kusanagi's VA was the same who voiced Kaneda on Akira

To this day, I still find myself wondering how they got away with Benimaru looking that much like Polnareff.
Yeah, he's way different as a character [decidedly unlike K9999 vs Tetsuo], but good lord, it seemed a bit on the nose.
The other two pairs there didn't feel that on the nose.

True, Brocken is nearer Benimaru's bracket for lifts - about as blatant as Beni (and Capcom's Stroheim/Guile), but he even has the same name as the Kinnikuman robo-Nazi dudes! Like if Beni had been a French guy called Jaques-Pepin Polnareff.

(speaking of Robo Nazis! Dude's name is friggin Swastika, bahaha)

Incidentally, I remember Rurouni Kenshin's (unfortunately disgraced) Watsuki wondering if Sam Sho 3's Shizumaru was a Kenshin nod, at the time, but SNK said he was modeled on Kurama from YuYu Hakusho. I thought it was odd, since I don't believe Watanabe ever commented on Soujiro/Chris, who share a general aesthetic and some key characteristics (the "smiling empty killer" persona, and an emphasis on blinding speed).

I'd never have assumed Shizumaru was Rurouni-inspired, he seems to have as much in common with Kenshin as both do with Adol from Ys.

I used to think Japan was just somewhat less litigious. Either that or nobody cared about World Heroes and/or Robo Nazis. IIRC, the Fighter's History lawsuit (which I guess was more about systems/mechanics, but still) was Capcom USA's idea, to the extent they actually sued DECO in Japan as well. I need to read up on that, but it gave me the impression Capcom's home branch didn't give a shit, a bit like Yuge/Uemura being all "Nope!" when asked if they were worried Konami would come after them for lifting Gradius's powerup bar for Slap Fight.

Expectations remain intact, but boy, he looks kickass. They nailed it with him.

Except for his vapour cannon quote. Back in the Neo Geo days it sounded like he was yelling "BASEBALL COLOGNE!!" and that was perfect.

Daww. TFW realise mah boi JEIDERN's trailer uses an arrangement of "In Spite Of One's Age" (KOF98 Oyaji Team). His ridiculously lanky JEIDERN ASSASSINATION TECHNIQUES look as idiosyncratically lethal as ever. Flying neckbreaker redux looks legit terrifying, not as rad as the ol' swingy-dingy w/spraying blood, just clinical ASSASSINATIONS

Image

It's good to see the Japanese continue to recover from that cringefest a few years back (witness an avowed pedo get mad at FTG boobs - wait. what am I saying? of course a pedo would hiss in rage at the sight of grown women).

^ Jeidern instructing his adopted daughter on how to deal with Nicholas "Srhbutts" Nyberg

Fuck those creeps. *ptoo* Happy JP fightin vibes are back again. My mans is lookin' FUCKIN BUFF! Mary not bad either!

Related, goddamn I wish Xiaohai and co would disable that shitty graphic filter. Killer KOF95 set with JEIDERN in all his busted-tier glory. Yeah the whole thing is a Kyo/Iori/Heidern mirror match, but when were Neo KOFs and balance ever on better than nodding terms? Image Blistering intensity with that sidestep strike, perhaps the series' best BG art overall (only 94's staggeringly good Japan stage contests it imo - Korea 95 and Yagami 95 are all-timers)... and mayo overlay. Lol that nasty sidestep robbery. Reminds me of a player I used to come across in the arcade CVS2 days called Dr. B. This guy used S Groove and was always sidestepping like a madman. You just didn't see that much and it could be really frustrating and disorienting to deal with.

I found without universal gatling routes it's annoyingly hard to just pick up

but following a 'character basics' guide unlocks the fun. And it is fun, very fun.

I like Strive [and have put in a truly stunning amount of time into it over the last few months because good lord the netcode is good and I can get matches at any hour of the day, all day], but it's really different from old GG in ways that are definitely unappealing at first glance and I still stand by my post some time ago stating that I probably wouldn't be quite as big of a GG fan if previous games handled more like Strive -- contrast how the first time I ever got my hands on GGX all those years ago, I found myself wondering why more games didn't have such amazing movement and such a free-flowing feeling. Strive definitely feels much, much, much more restrained by GG standards.

Blinge is also 100% right, you basically need to go to Dustloop or whatever and read up to get started with it, or else it's just going to be miserable. For a game that's been simplified to be easier, getting started out is not a nice, organic sort of thing.
Characters are definitely designed to have one specific playstyle above all else, and don't have enough options to effectively ignore their archetype, unlike older GGs. You don't have terribly much leeway to carve out your own style and fumble your way ahead with a bit of prior knowledge about older games.
There's still a bit of variation in terms of play, although it ends up revolving heavily around universal mechanics like Roman Cancels, what your preferences are around approach and dashing, bursts, etc.

At least Strive's RC is a great mechanic. In fact, I'm really tempted to say that it's my favorite mechanic in fighting games.
It's a movement tool to approach, it's a combo starter for things you wouldn't usually get reward off of, it's a combo extender to give yourself some additional guaranteed damage, it's a defensive option to slow down an enemy attack or get away, it's an offensive option to force your way into a gap or continue pressure, it lets you correct your mistakes for a reasonable price, etc, etc. Also, it launches, which makes using it far more free-form vs older GG games.
It's just a remarkably good way to spend 50% meter and I love it. Very versatile, very cool.
Blinge wrote: This is assuming online play. I've barely touched it as a single player experience
Strive's single-player experience is awful. The AI is particularly lame even by fighting game standards, there aren't really any extra modes like M.O.M. or anything beyond arcade/training/survival.
I guess you could try and fight the TLB version of Nagoriyuki [who is entirely obnoxious -- I beat his first form after like 20 attempts, but then I was like 60 attempts into his second and decided that I wasn't having any fun trying to lame him out while dealing with the truly awful damage scaling applied to my combos].
You also get a "free" movie attached to this fighting game [which I enjoyed quite a bit despite it being a bit dumb and often poorly animated, but I also watched it on Youtube because that gives me all the advantages that an actual video player provides vs just in-engine cutscenes], and that's it.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Aesthetically, Iori's oldschool throw was always a guilty pleasure of mine. Appears to seize the opponent's torso/belly in his doubtlessly terrifying, steel-rending grip, before hauling back with all his weight and rrripping out, as they inexplicably go flying in the other direction. Physics pls? Ehh. Feels rad, and the animation's satisfying as fuck.

Hit me this morning that Bloodborne's Visceral Attack goes into precisely the same mental cubbyhole. Just, uh, CERO Z ver, y'know >_>
