Models, not clay, and not really the cover of a game, but just a poster that comes with a guide for the game.. but still so awesome.

Makaimura Gaiden (GB/JP). A screaming demon wreathed in hellfire brandishing a good pair of fists and one helluva big mouth. Metal as fuck.

Image

Faxanadu (FC). Also pretty metal, albeit to a lesser degree! DragonForce to Makaimura Gaiden's Slayer.

Game's intro is claymation. Also semi claymation cover art. (And a darn game once you "get it")

Jesus, that's pretty grim. 3; I like its honesty. I wonder if it's a historical photo, or posed.

It's a good game, yeah, but that looks like just bad CG.

Sega Turbo flyer, 1981:

Incidentally among the first video games I can recall encountering, certainly the first coin-operated one. Was at a local pizza place with Vanguard and Pac-Man. Wish it'd gotten a decent port, I remember the last credits I played for old times' sake in the late 90s being pretty enjoyable.

Went looking for OutRun's AC flyers and was surprised they didn't take a similar approach. Guess Sega technology had outgrown the need for pretty girls by then. Image

Executive decision made long ago to include posed models - hopefully cicada's okay with my rule-bending. ;3

Whoa, Air Fortress's FC cover is a lot more unusual than I'd recalled. I'd remembered the character being in very utilitarian Alien-style overalls, which would've been cool in itself. But looking at his armour and weaponry, it's got a nice balance of gritty purpose to space fantasy.

Image

Good cover scans seem hard to find unfortunately. Here's a bigger one, but it's very sunfaded.

Those MSX Fan covers are sick. Love that.

Kyuukyoku no Soukoban - 3D Puzzle & Cinema has a lot of charming low budget claymation.
youtube auto-translate subtitles isn't quite cutting it. I'd love to know the story is. Somewhere in there youtube translated "Halle Berry" ..that's a name I've not heard in eons.

Don't think Beast Warriors was posted yet. Rather metal as fuck! Always loved RIOT's logo, and it's particularly apropos here.

Wikipedia article wrote:The game's cover art was created by Yasushi Nirasawa, in his position as a model-builder for Hobby Japan magazine.
IIRC the game's rep is middling/poor, but I'd almost snap up a nice cheap copy for the sleeve alone.

Nice bump! That is a pretty insane cover.

I was just thinking about this thread a couple weeks ago--I had found some covers I don't think were put in here, but I forget what they were.

What's even more surprising is that the US version, Beast Wrestler, actually retains the original box art. No riot logo and green bars at the top and bottom, though.

I watched a video of the game itself, as well. Dat hit detection. A couple times, monsters were hitting other monsters from the other side of the ring.

Apologies for necro-ing a thread! I'm a new user here and instead of lurking, I thought I'd contribute to this thread, since I love this kind of stuff.

I know Faxanadu has popped up in here already, but Xanadu also utilized model building. All by the artist Kow Yokoyama. Same goes for some promo stuff for Ashguine.

Because it was so badass, I tried to isolate the Byrd from Bydo from the magazine cover that Squire Grooktook posted.

Never a big deal here tbh, especially not with highly specific threads like this one. In any case you merely knocked the topsoil off, it's me that exhumed the bugger with a JCB a few weeks back.

Beautiful picks, too. :o Love the perspective effect on the first. Interesting that Famicom Xanadu was far from the series' first use of the technique.

Nice job - on a stark black BG, PlayDohbkeratops suddenly looks significantly more fleshy and biohorrific!

Also re: Hudon on FC, a small offering from my recent gaming pickups. Didn't know until now that the titular model from Milon's Secret Castle (NES) is actually on Meikyuu Kumikyoku (FC)'s cover too. Shame they went and divorced it from the hand-drawn stuff, it's a nice little pairing.

Just kidding! The game doesn't exist.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"
