Pulseman. It can be hard to see on the front cover but looking at the back cover you can tell. It appears to be the same model they are using.

Both not clay but models/real stuff  .
Two of my favourites.

Obiwanshinobi, I think you're not understanding what this thread is supposed to be about.

Don't post covers with CGI, please.

Yeah it's ok if it is some other type of physical model or even some digital technique that mimics the style very closely (I think some of the Pikmin ones are actually CG).

But in general I'm talking about 1980s, made out of clay. paper or plastic models and photographed.

Really? Try searching for Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3 in google image search. There are quite a few promotional images in this style as well. I'm certain they are the real deal.

First time really seeing them, but thats the vibe I got. That last one "Eledees", looks like CG to me, but I'm definitely not 100% sure one way or the other.

I thought the same, but if you look real close you can see the clay 'imperfections'. Still possibly CG, but I think it might be real clay.

How'd I forget Solbrain? Here's another Angel-published, Natsume-developed Sentai-themed sidescroller for FC, Choujin Sentai Jetman. Unfortunately the game is dishwater dull by Natsume standards but at least the cover is nice and loud:

^That's a great one, but was already posted. ;)

I'm a bit surprised how many covers like this there actually are.

Early games like this are pretty easy to tell because CG couldn't do anything remotely realistic then.

I can't tell either, but even if they're CG they're still superimposed over a photograph (of a pizza?), meaning their intention was the evoke the idea of toys interacting with real-life objects.

So it still fits the thread in spirit, I guess.

I'd say Bonanza Brothers looks like plastic or rubber models if anything. Same with SD Snatcher, or so it looks.

Probably my all-time favourite in this style, Ganbare Neo Poke Kun. Unfortunately I can't find a larger image, which is a shame because the detail is really superb.

Haha, I never looked at Senjou no Okami's FC box closely enough to realise it was models! Only ever glanced at it while browsing. Ever so slightly tempted to pick it up now, it looks awesome.

Just recalled this one from Macaw's FC action game thread over at gamengai. No idea about the game itself but the dude's monstrous wanking arm is memorable at the very least.
