To me, what makes the game so enjoyable is exactly overcoming overcoming those random moments.

I trust your judgement, maybe I'd re-phrase as 'it gives not one shit about the player'.
I just find it a bit odd that the start of ST2 can either be absolutely maddening, or over within a matter of seconds.

I like to think of st2-1 as The Real D-Day Landing Simulator.

Alright, that made me chuckle on a crappy Wednesday.

Also, anything that thinks the Game Spot review is bad.... check this out:

https://metro.co.uk/2021/02/23/ghosts-n-goblins-resurrection-review-arthurian-legend-14132201/

Not just whiny and entitled, but flat out incorrect in places.

you can slow down the game, play it in Japanese, make Arthur invulnerable (you will be amazed at how difficult the game is even then), or select which level to begin at. Given that the game is essentially impossible without these cheats, this is easily the best version of the game

This is how arcade gaming is seen nowadays... I feel like the entire reason people even bother with titles of this vintage anymore is to poke fun at how "outdated" they are and pat themselves on the back for "knowing better". It's weird how badly they want to label these games as broken or having bad game design when they're just trying to do something different.

I mean, the way things are in this world, I guess it's not implausible that people would gravitate toward cheating simulators. Life's tough.

Alright, halfway through round 3 last night. Start of 2 can still be an absolute clusterfuck, but it's surprisingly manageable after that, and the first half of 3 seems reasonable enough. Hey, I can get double-teamed by Ghouls AND Resurrection tonight!

From that LA Times review:
Quote:
Sadly, one other thing that hasn’t changed is the game’s sexist, out-of-date design stereotypes. The story launches once again with a damsel-in-distress plotline: A princess is kidnapped, and Arthur must spring into side-scrolling action.

This plot choice is often an indication of stubbornness, a staunch belief that the story is just an excuse for gameplay. That seems to be true for the run-and-jump approach of “Ghosts ’n Goblins.” But why bother to update pretty much every other facet of the game except the event that launches it?

Maybe because...

Quote:
Especially when that event carries so little relevance to the actual adventure?

Ok, nevermind.

Oh heck no! No matter how doughty the game might be, if the PS4 version is CANCELLED IN TEH CRIB, I will be SOL! :o

Here I come to save the day, with a TRVE & HONEST rewrite for our TOTES REFINED modern sensibilities. Image It is 25% Less Problematic! Image

AFTER GOKUMAKAIMURA, IN A TIME OF PEACE

While Prin-Prin and ARTHUR JR are away one weekend, King Arthur nails some crazy broad - who turns out to be Red Arremer in drag! With MAKAIMURA at civil war, and invasion by a unified NINGENKAIMURA looming, General Arremer undertook an unsanctioned suicide mission. His goal: to assassinate Makai's most ardent foe, via the dread DEVILS CLAP

"JESUS FUCK, MY ASS" groans a sweaty, exhausted Arremer, sprawled prone on the chateau's plush carpet. "BUT AT LAST, MAKAI'S FUTURE IS ASSURED! DIE, ARTHUR!"

"No, my old friend of war" mutters the king. "I will not die, this night."

"WHAT THE FU-" Arremer's rumbling baritone cracks, the hellborn pox biting down hard. In the torchlight, Arthur looks every inch a Warrior King: chiselled, rippling and admirably hung, his physique radiating hard prowess.

"You must have truly thought us monsters, to go this far."

Arthur's regal solemnity chills Arremer's bones. He can only stare in mute anguish, beaten tears welling, as his unwitting lover regales him of TENGOKU NO PENICILLIN. An elixir thought mythic in Makai, said to spring from the blood of the Maddest Shagger - a bearded crusader of iron will and iron hog, one who traversed heaven, earth and hell itself, seeking the horniest Nymphs - those immortal slappers, whose voracious appetites and staggering body-counts leave men and demons alike crumbling with pox. Slowly, painfully, gaining mastery of every venereal affliction known to the realms, the Shagger's return would bring his people relief, and hardcore bareback fucking - were he to exist.

"You..." Arremer's bitter laugh scarcely overcomes the whispering night breeze. King Arthur allows himself a rare half-smile.

"DEVILS CLAP is not what it was in our day. 'Socialised Medicine,' I think they call it. You know I never had the patience for these things. Always off somewhere, running and jumping around. How long has it been, since we last met in battle? I miss those..." The king trails off, silenced by the piteous, beseeching aspect overcoming his dying rival - as disarming on the visage of the Arremer as snowfall in the searing southern wastes.

"My... army pension... wife, kids... they'll be... don't tell - " The collapse is sudden. A legend dies. Only dust remains.

"I won't. I swear it." Arthur wonders where his queen and ARTHUR JR are now, suddenly ashamed of his nakedness.

"DAAAMN BRO, THAT SHIT WAS HELLA GAY" A familiar, pestilent buzzing fills the air. "CANT BELIEVE MY BOY RED WENT OUT LIKE THAT"

"You saw." King Arthur is terrifying in his restraint. Even Beelzebub's foul heart skips a beat, before he nervously swallows and raises the Remembering Frame once more.

"HELL YEAH MOTHERFUCKER! GON RUN THEM ARREMERS CLEAN OUTTA TOWN WITH THIS SHIT, BIG CHANGES COMIN FOR THE BUB-BUB CLAN! BTW HOW'S WIFEY AND JUN-"

Only the lightning reflex of a Makai Insect saves Beelzebub from the dagger flung at his thorax - the blade now quivering hilt-deep in solid brick, the fiend's cackle merging with the night.

The Warrior King who never sought the crown reaches for his boxers, bonds of ancient valour burning in his heart.

Capcom was actually planning to open the game in a very similar way. They were determined to push the RE Engine to its limits, but the whole thing was called off when Nintendo found out somebody had leaked the plot of Breath of the Wild 2, as this was word for word stolen from that game's script with the only difference being Arthur, the Red Arremer and Prin Prin replacing Link, Ganon and Zelda, respectively. It seems, BIL, great minds think alike.

Blimey :o Seems Capcom, by electing to regress to their usual SEXISM (Right And Proper Morality Code c1.s4a.01: Gender Reversal NOT FOUND, product is MOST HARAAM), merely to avoid a little litigation from THE BIG N, have just become the most problematic Nihonjin on the block! They are offending The Modern Moral Gaming Majority on both mechanical AND thematic levels. I approve - or rather, I will approve, once they sort out their dogshit Arcade Stadium situation

Newest one might be the hardest yet. Spent an hour or so last night flicking between both games and getting absolutely slaughtered. Not sure I would describe it as 'fun' :)

I'm feeling very Trouserplank about the entire series ATM.

Whenever I'm feeling a bit blue, or in this case, absolutely useless at a particular series, I go back and read his posts. It's like reverse psychology.

A genuine treasure of our community. He has at least two or three absolute corkers - this one should go in the Oxford dictionary, and a teacher training manual or three:

All love to you DTP, if you ever see this! You are one of a rarefied class, along with this thread's own Edmond The Mad - you may not have knocked that brick wall down, but by God and all that is holy, you gave it a damn good thrashing!

Give me ten DTPs or Edmonds over one cheating fuck, that's what I always say. Image

So it's been about a week! How many of you brave, foolish souls have set your hearts on being TrouserPlanked?

I started out on the "true experience" difficulty, Legend, but after hours of failure and a difficulty reduction, I got sick of tearing my hair out and restarted a new file on one step lower, Knight difficulty. Granted, a difficulty reduction is offered after 15 or so deaths on any level, but I was getting upset at seeing DIFFICULTY REDUCTION plastered over my screen results. I have my pride.

If you choose Difficulty Reduction on Legend, the game will ease up but you will still only have 2 checkpoints (mid stage, pre-boss) and two hits. Which is fine, but again, I want to beat the levels without that crutch for now.

I am honestly enjoying myself far more on Knight, where Arthur is granted 3 hit-points (some random pieces of armor still hanging on after the first hit!) and the checkpoints are more plentiful (reminding me of the original Makaimura which had checkpoints fairly regularly). The deaths still come regularly but I feel less disheartened since I am not repeating half the stage just to grind a new challenge. I feel like the number of checkpoints here should have been an option on Legend - for as long as these levels are, having only two is excessive.

And these levels are longer and more involved than any arcade level in the series. I haven't played Goku but players compare them more to that game's sprawling affairs. They are linear of course but they are marathon challenges in and of themselves, with less of the impetus being a "1cc" of all the levels and more about surviving each level as its own contained course. The game encourages you to treat each level this way, counting the number of deaths, the times checkpoints were used, time, and ranking you on an individual stage level. Thus you are meant to go through the stages (which also have unlockable shortcuts) and get better and better, dying less and less, presumably.

And of course, the permanently unlockable magic (and tokens to buy magic spells) which hammer home the console nature of the game. I haven't yet figured if the game is balanced around the magic or not (maybe on Legend?). Sometimes in the heat of things I get by on just my reflexes but magic spells definitely give you some much needed offensive power and defensive breathing room, with a long charge time being the trade-off. The medusa spell is surprisingly effective, shutting out a wave of zako enemies for a goodly long time (giving you a chance to take out the trash).

Proud moment yesterday was managing to beat stage 3 with less than 10 deaths:
Image

If i had collected one more errant point item I would have had a personal best. AFAIK there aren't online rankings which is a shame!

I'm enjoying myself quite a bit even if the game is emphatically not arcade structured. The heart is there in any event. There are some delightfully trollish moments that make me despair, but also those moments when things finally go my way (captured: Get Behind me, Satan!).

djmikehaggar & I have been taking the punishment on Legend. We just cleared stage 2 earlier tonight. The difficulty is unbelievable...spending anywhere from 2-5 hours per checkpoint. My stats so far are 152 deaths on stage 1A and 82 deaths for stage 2A. I took a quick peek into stage 3 and good lord...

Coming off of the frustration with Ghouls, I have to say I'm not really feeling this at the moment. There's hard, then there's plain vicious.

Having said that, there are a couple of things that don't help. The walking speed is too slow - you actually move faster when jumping, which seems a mad oversight.

Also, there's something 'off' about the amount of time before spawning enemies can be damaged, and how quickly they spawn. It fells like they spawn quicker and are invincible for slightly longer than your throwing action freezes you in place - meaning that if you've already launched a shot, and one chooses to spawn directly under you, you're hit. Which can happen quite often due to the increased enemy numbers.

Any good replay of Ghouls/Dai MD 2-ALL for scrubs like me? I'm still afraid of Dai's RNG party so preferrably Ghouls.

What's interesting about the Arthur's movement in Resurrection is that it feels nearly identical to the original AC Makaimura. Even the pronounced arm-swing running animation is like a high-res and more smoothly animated version of the old game. Same with jumping. I've been playing them back-to-back and they feel incredibly similar.

The Legend mode of this game feels far more difficult than any previous entry, but so far the RNG feels about the same: with a good enough strategy you can handle whatever the RNG throws at you most of the time.
