It's a great game too. Unfortunately the JP version is way costlier than the US one. Usual story with the Mega Drive.

^ Love that picture, Hiryuu looks convincingly menacing there which is something I'd like to see more from the protagonists.

Anyway, since I can't think to add any more artists to this thread here are some of my favorite cover arts instead.

I have been saving video-game related images off the 'net since the late '90s. My aim this year (uh, 2013, wow, what a trip) is to actually start sorting some of them out! That's if the sub-zero temperatures in the UK right now don't zap the drives

Shinkiro x 100 for me. I love the detail/realistic approach when it comes to art.

I love the Sega CD Shin Megami Tensei cover. Who drew it? It doesn't look like Kaneko's work.

The PCE one is ace too:

If Sega CD was region free, I'd get that version. It looks pretty cool.

Image

Badass intro too.

Unghhhh how I wish there'd been a Strider III on Naomi or CPS3. So many awesome character designs in both games.

Word. Judge Dreddesque. Not so much a murderface as a judge, jury and executionerface.

That MD Ghouls n' Ghosts box keeps tempting me to grab the cart, it's too friggin' explosive. Strider's does too, come to think of it.

Image

Re-caught my eye recently. Love Shinkawa's work on the first MGS. Also on the late 90s / early 00s KCET tip, my nth replay of the first two Silent Hills reminded me that Takayoshi Sato was a god damn magician.

I like the PS2 version's cover even better. Most eye-catching PS2 cover in store on that side of Ōkami. PAL version, that is. Better layout than NTSC US/C. I think the PAL 'Cube version retains the American layout because Nintendo rather than Namco was the publisher.
Speaking of which, did Namco publish at least one PAL GameCube game? Any idea why I-Ninja didn't come out for the 'Cube in Europe?
P.S. Never mind, apparently they did publish Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos and then some over here.

I never thought Soul Calibur II's art was very good, but whatever floats your boat.

Neat thing about The Super Shinobi II's Japanese manual art is that it depicts Musashi in the same style as the cover, sans his mask. Wish I could find a scan. Japanese MD manuals tend to rock with the full colour high-gloss approach. Contra Hard Corps' explosion of pixels and Yasuomi Umetsu art is like goddamn nerd porn compared to the paltry b&w NTSCU version.

edit: ah, here we go. JP TSSII manual art:

Agreed on Golden Axe. Crying shame about the game.

I never, ever get tired of Last Blade's cover and art design. Talk about a dead art form.

This thread just went into first. Some superb art examples here. Paradigm: some nice SFC choices - there are literally tons of gems in the catalogue when it comes to box art, but I'm too lazy to find them all.

Spectacular. Really like how it foregrounds the all-important mouse amidst everything else blowing up. The clone shadow is stylishly incorporated too. My favourite covers tend to have lots of detail straight from the games, as with Vampire Killer's.

^ That Airforce Delta Strike is one serious cover. I approve.

Also @ Paradigm, think I'm going to have to buy a copy of Spiral Nemesis II b/c I can't stop staring at that box art since you posted it. Truly magnificent.

Click for full res. Uncropped version of Strider Hiryuu 1 + 2 cover art (NTSCJ PS1). fn' crazy levels of crackling intensity, minute detail and vast scale.
