Memories of Speed King

Post by Skykid »

Not the shitty Playstation port of course.

I have fleeting memories of Konami's arcade Speed King, being lucky enough to play it a few times as a kid and watch the attract sequence over and over when I was out of cash.
I remember the game being mindblowingly impressive and the aesthetic was to die for, but I can find barely anything on it searching the net these days.

I can't even find a cabinet picture, just handful of screens and a bit of development back story that ties in with Snatcher.

Does anyone have any images of the cabinet, or even better, any vids of the original footage? I'd love to see a bit more of this again.

Thanks for the help.

No, that's not it. :o

It's amazing hardly anyone seems to know this, I suppose the cabinet was at a bit of a premium for most arcade vendors.

It's a 1995 arcade title that got an awful Playstation port. It's a futuristic racing game set in Snatcher's Neo Kobe city, and I remember it having incredible graphics.

I'd love to see the cabinet again or even some decent footage of the game, but it doesn't look like I'm going to have much luck. Even the flyer links on system 16 are dead. :(

I also saw the arcade machine I think and the ps port, I played that alot. great game for the time.
You offcourse do need to play with the negcon if you want any fun at all.

hey, maybe it´s emulated?

There was even a kind of sequel announced but cancelled

Vic Viper - Arcade (Unreleased)
Vic Viper was a 3D arcade racing game in development in 1995. It was shown in an issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, however, apparently Konami cancelled the game quietly. It looks to be a bit like F-Zero or Wipeout, as you pilot hovering ships over a race track. It's widely believed that this was meant to be a variation on one of Konami's other racing game, Speed King, which was ported to the Playstation in Japan.

:palm:

Being called Road Rage may have been the issue there.

That's not the right cabinet though, that's some fancy simulator version. The version of Speed King I played was a sit down cabinet. The housing was still huge, but it was red and resembled the main vehicle in the game. If you can find a picture of that google wizard, I'll be impressed! :)

Somebody did bring in a Road Rage cab to the 2010 CAX show set on Free Play. I thought it was an odd arcade racing game myself due to the odd sounding game title. I did give a spin just to see what it was like.

That's pretty cool, what did the cabinet look like (or was it the hydraulic rig in the flyer cools posted?)

Lol, this isn't going too well.

Ignoring the fact the quality of this video is awful, I'm positive (despite being billed as Road Rage on Playstation, which doesn't exist) that this is footage from the arcade version.

Would still love to see a picture of the original cab tho. :(

You're right about the Playstation port, it's atrocious, but wrong about the arcade game. It was Snatcher's Neo Kobe 2046 in the flesh, look at the screens. It had really incredible graphics (for the time at least) and even though you spent a lot of time being smashed around, it was really fast and sucked you right in. It had really wide roads and really awesome dystopian design work. Definitely the coolest futuristic arcade racer I can remember, just wish I could see more of it. :(

Here's a link I found:
http://junkerhq.net/MiscScans/SpeedKing/info/

It's got some pics that aren't on the system16 site.

Hmm I guess that video I linked WAS 18-wheeler! Sorry! :) I just saw whizzy lights and figured it was the same thing

Yeah, already seen that page man, unfortunately they're all screens of the shocking PSX port - not even the same game. I appreciate you looking for me though, but we may as well call it a day, I can't find anything on Google.

Some more info´s
http://snesorama.us/board/showthread.php?t=13374
http://www.gamestone.co.uk/gradius/came ... e_2045.php
http://translate.google.de/translate?hl ... _KOBE_2045
Secret ships? wtf!
anyway, with the negcon it is a blast and you´ll be zipping through the curves. not the best game ever, but I played it alot.
You might want to google on the Japanese name "スピードキング"
In theory there might be an official konami webpage which is probably offline, but perhaps in "way back machine" it can be partially viewed!

Yep, I already knew about the secret ships and stuff. The NegCon is preferable and helps marginally, but the PSX port is still horrendous, no two ways about it. :(
Thanks for the google hint, I'll see what I can find.

Here you go:

Unfortunately there's only a small zoomed in picture of the sit down cab, but at least it's something.

EDIT: Sorry I couldn't get it a bit sharper

Hey dude, thanks for that. :o
It's a shame you don't have a scanner, but it's something still.

I actually think the 'sit down' pic you mention there is actually an open view of the same simulator pod, or a cross-section. I swear the actual sit down cab was red, but until I find proof I'm not going to know if I'm imagining it.

Thanks again!

I know this got bumped and probably not relevant anymore, but I did a YouTube search and found this video of it from AOU 1995: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO0ECwjgxzA

For 1995 the fidelity is actually rather impressive. Given how bad the PS1 port looks by comparison I imagine it would've been better off with a PS2 or even an Xbox conversion.

Late to the party, but that's actually the sequel to 18 wheeler, King of Route 66.
