My favourites:
The Revenge of Shinobi
Alien Soldier
Super Fantasy Zone
Phantasy Star IV
TF III
Gleylancer
Stage 1 track of the revenge of Shinobi is very chill and such a nice introduction to the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ekCndckJfU
Soltype of Alien Soldier is a great head nodding tune while you run through the train: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URQjOkEzdYw

Puggsy, probably. CD version might be a bit better, though.

It's a toss up between Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes, and Gauntlet IV for me. SoR2 and Gunstar need no explanation really, tons of great tunes in them. Gauntlet IV is a standout for me due to sounding nothing at all like a Genesis game. The instrumentation in it is exceptionally good, and while the soundtrack's kinda small, what's there is amazing. I'd argue it sounds like one of the most technically proficient soundtracks on the system.

Those are some sweet choices. I've got to look up those individual songs, I don't know any track names really, but all those games have super soundtracks. Like you I usually preferred Mega Drive FM / PSG over the Super Nintendo sound.KimagureMachibuse wrote:The Super Nintendo may have its fairshare of good music terms of music however i much prefer the music composions of music on the Sega Genesis that combine the use of FM and PSG by a long shot.

Herzog Zwei and Undead Line were the first to come to mind when considering my favorites.
recently got the Mega Drive Last Action Heroes CDs from Amazon Japan, always knew Pulseman had a great soundtrack, but holy moley Ristar is up there as one of the best.
The Mega Drive renditions of B-Univ's Virtual Racing soundtrack are certainly worth a mention.
Everyone loves Castlevania music, right?
Landstalker OST I'm not going to listen to by itself but isn't that some of most well scored BGM of all time. I know Kan Naito talked about the cinema influence on his creative vision and this soundtrack by Motoaki Takenouchi is the most cinematic Mega Drive score I can think of, perhaps next to Soul Star.
Also by Takenouchi, Jewel Master has a phenomenal soundtrack.
Bad Omen
Time Dominator
Vapor Trail
All the Phantasy Star games
Revenge of Shinobi and all the Streets of Rage. 2. 3.
and never played it and just listening now or the first time, Y's III Wow, that's a great one!
