Re: All my YT videos - Outrunners - 3/14
Something changed in Sega's graphical approach to the Super Scaler games around the time of Turbo OutRun. I can't put my finger on it but I went from feeling the early classics were damn near perfect to having none of the "modern" ones gel for me at all. Stronger hardware and effects or not, all the later ones and especially Power Drift/Rad Mobile just seemed amateurish to me in their look. Not even sure if it's technical or from the art style.
I sure wish I could see the magic of some of the big ones.

I'd agree with Turbo Outrun (very grey and grimy) and Rad Mobile (also), but Power Drift was an absolute riot, if nowhere near as technically polished as OutRun, and OutRunners I feel is the absolute pinnacle of Sega's sprite-scalers. They'd reigned in the excess of Power Drift, improved the OutRun handling model, and the entire thing just screams FUN. For me personally, it's the one game I've been waiting on a home conversion of ever since playing it in the arcades (no, MD doesn't count), and it's a damn shame that it seems unlikely ever to happen.

Those are my top three super scalers as well. I sunk the most time in Super Hang On, probably due to it being the most challenging of the bunch, though I prefer Outrun's aesthetics just a little bit more. All three are pretty much perfect.BareKnuckleRoo wrote:I'd argue this too. There's some stuff contenders like Super Hang-On and the original Outrun, but Outrunners has incredibly polished, thoughtful design, it's hard not to enjoy it. It was also the start of Outrun's shift to static traffic on courses instead of randomized traffic, something that continued to Outrun 2 and I think was for the best.
