I'm glad you're taking over the thread! I played a bit of my PS2 port to get a little activity on the board. Can you remind me what's the "Original" mode for PS2? I assume you mean Tag mode?

welcome to board!
About original mode:
Randorama wrote:0.1 SOME NOTES ABOUT THE PS2 PORT

The PS2 port has been published in late March of 2005 and, unlike the arcade version, lacks a Tate mode. This means that the original game was produced in tate orientation (vertical screen), whereas the the PS2 port has two modes: "arcade" (you leave your tv in horizontal position and the screen is vertically oriented, with big lateral screen-fillers) or the "original" mode (yoko mode, i.e. horizontal resolution with vertical scrolling, like the precedent titles, with small side-fillers to properly fill the screen). It is debatable on why Takumi didn't put the "complete Tate option, of course: at any case, the original mode is highly suggested, as the level design has been clearly thought with yoko mode in mind. Most of the enemies will come from the side, like the two other giga wings, and there's no chance for unseen enemies to snipe at you.
Seems which player gets some advantages playing in this mode.

Thanks for clarifying! Now you just gotta fix the OP title type and we're set

I had forgotten about the monitor changes. TBH I think i might like the Original screen orientation better. Since that part of the faq isn't 100% clear, on the PS2 it seems to be

Arcade: narrow vert orientation, screen pans back and forth horizontally
Original: same vertical orientation, with the screen widened with minimal (no?) scrolling

I had originally kept it in Arcade because I thought "Original" based on that wording might be a 'wobble' mode, but now that I tried it out I think I might prefer Original for the larger play space. I can definitely see ships like Robin being far more effective (in fact, based on a few test runs I can say definitely so) because her speed is far more suited to the wider play area. I was still going about with Eagle and not having too bad of a time of it though. I'll plink away at both and see what happens!

Make sure that in the original mode, the screen is wider without scrolling. You can see everything on the screen at once, making things easier.

Got this score early in later week in a different PC (from friend), that I was playing before it was adding too much lag in commands.

887,0777,7343,09927810 - Third_strike - ALL - Robin - taito Type X

I will play this game again when I get a less laggier PC to play.

Managed to get a Taito Type-X version running on my PC, so I can also do a little PC practice on top of the PS2.

Wish I could have gotten further into stage 4, but a best is a best!

Additionally, I decided to put some work into the PS2 Original Mode, as well. It definitely feels different!

If you insist! I new PB for the Taito Type X arcade version! First time making it to stage 5 (and surviving the stage 4 boss). Now that I'm reaching this point, I am looking at your scores and wondering if there's any way for the Eagle to catch up! I'm glad you are separating scores by ship!

I'll continue to work on PS2 Original Mode as I find time and play. Maybe my next post will be a PS2 Original score?? Gotta fill up these leaderboards!

TAITO Type X

138,6529,7955,08136460 - EmperorIng - 5 - TypeX - Eagle

So far I think Stage 4 might be my favorite of the bunch. It's so chaotic and fun, bullets all over the screen. The boss is a real standout as well, just insane patterns + flying all over the screen.

Messing around with the ps2 port last night, so I thought I'd post a score
Been in a huge Giga Wing mood as of late, mostly with GW2 though.

I really wish there were some replays of the Eagle I could watch, and see how some other players tackle the game. It's kind of an unwieldy ship so I understand why there wouldn't be as much.

Why is noboby going with Grouse? I just recently started playing this again (tried it a few times with my friends when it came out on PS2) and I must say I have a lot of fun with all the ships. I usually find my favorite pretty quickly, but here I can see myself playing with pretty much any of them and have a great time. :D

I don't really know. I should do it and snag an easy community record, lol. In general I don't like the Stuck-type ships in the series (Stuck in GW1, Ralugo in GW2). Every ship is pretty viable even if the Robin is probably the clear winner due to its speed and not going to accidentally kill something before you want to like what can happen with the Eagle or Hawk.

Okay, I'm going to do this, I'm going to enter with my scoring in this game. Not because it's my goal (which is a "plain" 1CC and I will stop playing it when I have achieved that) but because I figure some lower scores will be fun to add as well! :) After the first night with the game my highscore is as follows:

92,3643,9151,40250920 - NOS - 4 - Type X - Hawk

124,5063,4076,80652610 - NOS - 5 - PS2 - Robin - Arcade

Died just before the boss. I need at least one bomb to clear that one and I usually clear the last stage just fine so I have a feeling the 1CC isn't far away now!

I tried the Eagle just for fun. This ship is pretty slow, but the missiles work.

167,7075,4840,37341860 - Third_strike - ALL - Eagle - taito Type X

I'm thinking about removing the PS2 modes to make it easier to update the tables, as the PS2's original mode is practically another game and gives advantages in survival and score, while the PS2's arcade mode is really messed and a bad choice since there is the version of Taito Type X available.

I think that would be a good idea. It's unfortunately quite confusing with the different PS2 modes (and to keep track of them).

Congratulations on the clear! I would like to clear with the Eagle too, for some reason I picked that ship as my "main."

Yeah, someone else can take over PS2 scores if they really want as part of their own thread. Ideally, with the greater availability of Taito Type X games now, people should really be encouraged to play that version over the mangled PS2 port. At least until someone comes along and finally releases a proper compilation port of the Giga Wing arcade games.

Congrats on the clear!

And thanks guys, this clear was really fast to my patterns!
I was so lazy about play latter weeks, but hope which this game bring my desire back again.

Pretty sure which you can if you want, just watch out to don't be trapped by Eagle's low speed after a reflect.

That's a bit of a surprise to me. For some reason, ever since I got the clear on PS2 original over one and a half decade ago, I was always under the impression that it was exactly the same as the original arcade version [well except for the low frame-rate].

I actually only played the other version(typeX) of the game once after that (briefly for a credit or so). And that was only few years ago. I certainly felt that the game seemed to be harder (at least to some extent) than I remembered. So probably this was the reason.

Did this Eagle run earlier this month, it shouldn't be so hard to beat that score now.
Third_strike - 365,1446,9281,07890340 - ALL - Eagle

Grouse is a very strange ship, I made this run to fill the table. Killing later bosses with this ship is a pain. But this ship is better at dodging more complex patterns.

In PS2 you can activate reflect force without stop shooting (easier and faster killings in key points), your ship feels a way faster (it is better to catch medals) and enemies shoot bullets in higher frequency (more bullets to reflect). In original PS2 you still get the advantage of full screen to see enemies that would otherwise be off-screen plus the fact that they keep shooting when they shouldn't be.

I didn't score as well as I'd like but I'm understanding that I should try to shoot as little as possible and let big enemies stay onscreen for as long as you can. Stage 5 is just chaos though.
