For auto, I want you to just type auto. Only needed if you're using piercing cannon autofire specifically. I don't need to know if you're using normal shot autofire. Note that this is added to ShmupMAME 4.2 as button 2 by default. I want to include this option because it ought to make the CPS-2 game more accessible to people.

List of all Mars Matrix scores from both DC Arcade and CPS-2 sorted by experience count
This seems like it should add some interest to competition especially in the CPS-2 version. So I hope, anyway. I know it's not a perfect comparison, but this gets rid of most of the differences between the DC and AC versions. The only difference left is the OP piercing cannon autofire in the DC version. I'll only add the highest entry from a single player though (there are a few people with both AC and DC scores. I'll just add every score to the list, myself, so no need for anyone else to do anything.

Rob has given up maintaining the Mars Matrix scoreboard, and as such, I am taking it over. I will keep everything the same for now, but do let me know if anyone would be interested in a DC score attack mode table, as well. Old thread can be found here, and is actually a decent resource for Mars Matrix strategy if you read through all of the comments

EDIT 2019.5.18: Prettied up the tables a bit. Maybe I should just create bbcode tables...
2021.6.1: Finally doing bbcode tables. Tried to do my best to track down any videos/pictures that go with the scores. Added a few scores that had been overlooked in the later days of the previous thread.

Arcade: 129,269,493,430 / 1,094,056 / 5 / Ship2 [US]

8) 8) Top 15 Mars Matrix Arcade Player 8) 8)

Kidding aside it's pretty easy to get a twelve digit score with a couple week's practice. If anyone is thinking about getting into this game for score I can offer up a "newbie route" that's helped me break into the game without much frustration.

Next goal for me is a quarter bil which I think I can manage with a slightly improved Stage 3, fewer Stage 4 deaths, and not dying embarrassingly in Stage 5.

Hurray, first new score to update!

I'll let it slide this time, but for future reference, note that the first post has formats for score submission above each score board. They make updating the board much easier, so would appreciate if people would follow them.
they are, as follows:

score - exp - name - ship type (1 or 2) - stage #
the ship type should just be a number, as should the stage (or ALL if you cleared).
example:
165,309,387,210 - 1,218,298 - Square_Air - 2 - 5
adding a [US] or [JP] at the end is fine (preferable, I suppose, though for now I'll continue not requiring it). Also things like bolding or coloring your score are fine, because it won't copy the formatting.

Not much of an improvement, but this seems to hint at good things to come. stages 1-3 were fine. screwed up pretty awful on stage 4 breaking the chain a couple of times in the early stage chain. Wasn't too good of a fountain chain, though also not terrible. Broke the chain twice in stage 5. Actually I think three times but the last one didn't matter that much. I think once I can get a run with successful chains of stages 4 and 5 as well as 1-3 I'll probably break 2 trillion. I don't think I want to stop there though, but I'll see.

EDIT: Added rules for using piercing cannon autofire in the CPS-2 version of the arcade game. Basically, you can do it, just add a field to your score that says "auto." Also added a table that's just every posted score for CPS-2 and DC arcade versions sorted by experience. Hopefully somebody other than me likes this idea, because it was a bit of a PITA to actually do :P

Painfully close, but I think my stage 4 and 5 actually need way more practice before I can succeed.

OMG I finally broke the 2 trillion frontier  I now officially have approximately 2/3 of Rob's score. Annoyingly though, I still haven't managed to pass Randorama even though I also broke the 4 million experience frontier. Better do that before I think about taking a break from MM.

I think I entered stage 3 with around 700k experience, which is good, but I underperformed a bit in stage 3, IIRC. I think I maybe only just got +1900 chain... Well I guess it's not really an underperformance, I haven't been getting many +2000 or more chains recently, but that would have made a big difference. I wonder if my gameplay in stage 3 has gradually deteriorated a little bit or something... IDK. Got solid chains in stage 4, though also not my best (I think it might have been like +1100 and +770 or so... but I can't quite recall). Bit of a lackluster stage 5 chain, but at least I didn't break it, I just screwed up the beginning a bit. First death in stage 4, I think 2 deaths there, 1 in stage 5, and 1 in stage 6, so I was on my last life.

I think I could maybe beat Randorama if I just had a bit better of a showing in stages 3, 4, and 5, but then again I might need to improve my actual route. Candidates for that include extending my stage 2 end chain back a little bit, or optimizing the second battleship in stage 4 a bit. I wish I could more consistently break +2100 chain in stage 3, though. That would be huge. I'm not sure what I'm doing differently when I do that.

I suspect the higher score from Rando might come from doing the pot trick in stage 3, but it's kind of hard to believe that it would be just that. He might be doing some other scoring tricks or maybe just chaining stage 2 better and thus bringing up the multiplier a higher earlier than I am.

tl;dr: GOD DAMNIT RANDORAMA

got a video which I will make available once I've done some formatting 'n shit

run details: Pretty solid stage 1 and 2, I believe, but with an unfortunate death in stage 2. Good, but not great, stage 3 (I think it was around +2150), very nice stage 4...? I actually don't remember it that well, but no deaths which is big. Stage 5 was surprisingly no miss and good chaining. First time I've ever full chained stage 5 in a full run that was otherwise also successful, lol. Stage 6 had a lot of deaths, but not too shabby. Yeah, good fucking run all things considered.

EDIT: video

Thank you Plasmo. Rob's 3 trillion still seems like an impossible feat though. I'm thinking I might take a break to play some different games for a bit. No doubt I'll come back though, eventually. Nothing else even comes close to MM in quality.

EDIT: going to copy some minimally edited notes from Discord for posterity. Context is that someone asked me about how I could improve from this point. It's basically about what it would take for me to beat Rob's high score.
Spoiler
(warning: huge block of text approaching) Well, I'm already pretty good on stage 4, tbh. I could do better, of course. I kinda fucked up the first chain and had to break a little early, but I still did pretty well. My max for that stage is about 900k, with 700 or 800k being more realistic (Can't remember what I actually got in that run). I'm sure it could be further optimized, but I'm not exactly sure how.
I came up with a non autofire route for the second battle ship a few weeks ago, and I forgot it since, but I don't think it was actually any higher chaining.
It's been a while since I watched Rob's 3 trillion video, so I can't say exactly where he's doing better than me, but I can say that based on the videos that he took down, he's getting about 1 million more than me in stage 3 (note that that's the route I based mine one, so it's wack that he's getting so much more, but those little optimizations really add up. Actually his chain is only higher by about 300 or 400 cubes). There are a few things that I can actually tell that he's doing in that video that I'm not, but the execution barrier seems extremely high. There are other parts where I really don't get how he's getting so many more cubes.
In stage 5 he's getting 2.8 million to my about 1.4 million usually. That's a bigger gap in chain number with him being looks like around 700 to 800 more cubes. I'm also basing my s5 route on that one. I sort of get how that works a little. Basically the stage is all about the bullet cancelling enemies and enemies that shoot bullets. The longer you keep the enemies alive before cancelling their bullets the more gold you can reap from them. This is why I'm not shooting much and mostly using the piercing cannon here. You do have to balance that against actually killing the enemies though, as they're worth a decent number of points, too. Then there's a few high value enemies that give you bonus enemies when you kill them, but I actually do get those much of the time. Can't remember if I'm getting them in this run. So in principle I understand this, but at the same time I still don't see how the gap is as big as it is.
Stage 2 is, of course, the most high IQ stage to chain, but the payoff is not really quite as high as stages 3, 4, and 5. I think if I learned how to link the two chains in the stage (and I do understand it in principle), then I would be pretty close to Rob, actually. In that video, though, he's also chaining through to the boss, which would be pretty difficult. All together it adds up to 1.1 million, and is the hardest stage to chain full stop.
The way that I'd be most likely to be able to dethrone Rob would probably be to equal his stage 3 or stage 5, and get better at one or more of the other stages. It's worth mentioning that building up higher experience earlier in the game is more beneficial, though, because you'll get the benefits of that higher multiplier in more stages. In any case, those possibilities seem nearly impossible, so I'm really not sure. It's definitely something I will do eventually, though.
Also notable that Rob gets more experience in stage 1 and I haven't looked at it for a while but I remember not being able to figure out how he was doing that, either. That would only be a maximum of like 150k more exp or so, though, I think

Updated with AVE's new score. Alas, I fear that the scoreboard index has likely not been updated with this thread, yet ^_^;

Made a few updates to formatting and such. Also added a few scores that got missed in the last thread (Sorry Squire Grooktook and CHI  ) I would encourage people to post scores even if they are bad! Mars Matrix is a wonderful game that just doesn't get enough play  Certainly don't feel like you need to clear to post a score. Mars Matrix ALL is probably one of the harder ones, after all.

I've been trying to relearn this game and decided to do it without any piercing cannon auto-fire this time, which is really not much of a stretch, as I was only using it in a handful of places anyway. That goal has been pretty successful, actually, but overall I am amazed by how much my skills have atrophied over the past 3 years  I think a 3cc has been my best performance so far. What really seems to be the issue (much more than the auto-fire) is that I don't have nearly as good of an innate sense of how to time things any more. One thing that is kind of cool, though, is that I'm learning new things that I never noticed before that will probably improve my consistency if I can ever get back to where I was.

However, rust can't stop me from posting my first CPS2 score, where I didn't even manage to make it past the S5 boss  It's actually a half-way decent score because I chained S3 really well and did okay in 1, 2, and 4. S5 was a dumpster fire, though

Arcade [JP]
515,045,018,000 - 3,921,806 - LordHypnos - 2 - 5

Miscellaneous notes (that probably won't make any sense to anyone):
Spoiler
  • The plan is to counterstop, but... it's a long way off. It's looking like my route won't get me to the counterstop unless I get maybe 4.7 million XP (maybe 4.6) (This is actually quite intriguing, as many people have counterstopped with much less than that. Maybe it's the pot trick? Mars Matrix scoring is more than just chaining even though that's what I've always focused on) If I can get up to 5.25 million XP, I can counterstop before the final boss (might actually take less than this, I know Rob did it without clearing with only 5 mill). I don't really think 5.25 million is realistic, even if it's theoretically possible, but 4.7 is, I think. With 4.5ish, I couldn't do it even when I made a concerted effort to shoot down more enemies than usual.
  • WTF is with the gold cube waterfall? Sometimes I get a +2200 chain, sometimes I get a +1900 chain. I think I usually get a +2100 chain. Not really sure what tiny little difference is doing this, but it makes a pretty big difference to XP. I wonder if I could figure out some way to consistently chain to the end? That could get me like +2500 maybe even. That section is hard, but I also only have the most vague routing possible, there.
  • End of S1 is also kind of weird. For a while I was consistently getting +830 or so, but now I'm usually getting like +770 to +800. I do think this is mostly a case of shield timing, but it also has to do with accuracy. I found that trying to hit a single enemy with all the bullets is usually the most effective, but perhaps not sufficient in itself.
  • Beginning of S3, for a while I was getting like +400 before the second mosquito attack pretty reliably and still recharging in time, but it's kind of degenerated to like +375 (?) more recently.
  • Haven't really figured out what makes the difference between a +1700 and a +1800 chain in S5 yet.
  • End of S1 boss: I'm pretty sure this is almost entirely shield timing, but seems to be a lot of variability in this last mosquito attack, probably +295 to +350. I will say that, way back when, I used to almost always get under 300 and these days I usually get like +315 or so, so clearly I'm doing something right.
  • During the end of the first wave of enemies, killing the ones in the top right will give you bonus enemies even if you let some others escape
  • Getting too close to the final enemy in the 3rd wave of enemies in S1 seals some or all of it's bullets, however you won't be able to grab all of it's bullets if you stay too far back, so there is a balance to be struck with that. It's possible that this makes aiming for getting 3 enemies in this wave more optimal than all 5 (which is nearly impossible without auto-fire), because you will be a little further back usually, but maybe not. The blue ship is quite fast, after all. In any case this can be a substantial difference in XP, particularly if you do poorly elsewhere in the stage. It all adds up.
  • Figured out a more consistent way to link the second (?) and third (?) segments of the S3 chain
  • Diagonal movement maybe seems to usually get better results when using normal shot to milk the waterfall (TBH this one is pretty dubious)

Was thinking about waiting to submit this until Calice Cup is over, but it's not really my style. Playing in Retroarch with the FBNeo core.

There's a video here, but I am hoping to get it uploaded and published to my own YouTube when I get a chance.

Congrats on the counter stop and the great EXP, and thanks for the video!

I presume you're going for Rob's EXP count next? :)

It's certainly on the list of goals, hahaha. Pretty intimidating one though

Not even a clear, dang! Very impressive.

I'm also glad you can confirm Retroarch as an emulator for this game. Overall CPS2 games run well in it (played Progear in it, and it always felt great), but there have definitely been some games that seem to have issues with Retroarch's run-ahead.

Thanks! And, yeah, luckily cps2 emulation seems to be really good these days.
