i have a score for salamander:

2,100,000ish 3-5 arcade

Sadly it was set around 1987 so i don't have an exact record of the score. The third loop of this game is a nightmare, i've seen one individual get to the 4th loop but i don't think i could ever achieve that. Is this score permissable or do we need something more exact? Playing on MAME and PSX in recent years i've achieved about 1,600,000 somewhere around 3-1 but the third loop requires some dedicated practice to do well.

Well, if you really want to be nice you can play it again on psx and post the exact score, or dig your best from memorycard or mame highscore file, as you probably would be on top anyway.

But this will do :)

ok, finally managed to buy the PCB so after a few practice games i have a new official score:

2,190,100 3-5

I was rather lucky to get so far on the third loop, but as usual stage 5 slaughtered me goodly.

yes, it doesn't appear very often. This one was sold on ebay and is the first i've seen there. I was determined to make this board mine and so i was about to place a large bid at the end of the auction and was horrifed when my computer freaked out before i could bid and so i missed it! The board went for a stupidly cheap £50, but it was won by someone i know so i offered £100 (about $175 US) to take it straight off him, which is what the board usually sells for i think. If you're wanting to buy it i think Sven666 might have one.

Salamander
DEL - 1,501,500 - 3-3 - Arcade

Lifeforce
Also Loop 3-3 - psx

Again I'm the mirror image of Mulletgeezer. My Salamander score is from 1987. Our scores on a number of the older shooters are similar eg. Twin Cobra.
My Lifeforce score was on the old Shmups boards. I have no other record of it.

I think you can dig it out from internet archive ; all you need to is type www.shmups.com and click "take me back"; but you got to dig the score out yourself! But it is there for sure ;)

Yay, now I got an excuse to play little bit of salamander again \O/

Getting close now!

Practising 2nd loop may not be bad idea; it can be a real pain in the arse.

I'll dust off my copy once you get past me.. ;)

Salamander and Salamander 2 are some of my fav. shooters. I'm a bit out of practice in Salamander 2, but here is my score for Salamander 2.

302,100

Asteroid Stage raped me a bit.

EDIT: I'm doing this on MAME with a keyboard.

I wouldn't mind if you'd provide me with level info -but I suppose this was 1-5 since you talked about asteroids.

I had another go on this game today, but could only get to 1-6. Maybe if I practise a bit. I noticed that powerups can stock you quite a bit of extra points so its worth gobbling them up even if you dont need them.

Okay, I'll remember the level number from here on out. Yeah, collecting every powerup can really boost your score, but all the speed ups make it difficult to control if you don't have a controller or a stick.

Salamander 2

Loop 1, stage Final (7)

Score- 588700

I was lucky enough to kill the golem at the beginning thanks to the Superplay video. However, stages 5 and 6 took most of my lives, and the intro to stage 7 left me with none. I think I lasted about 2 minutes on the boss. This run was more luck than skill.

Well done. I'm practising now too, but I keep daying stupid deaths as well.

My best score actually was over 768'000, but if my memory serves me correct, I did it with more lives so I disqualified it out myself. The top score I got there now is what I got with 3 lives.

Hi, I was away for a while.

PlasmaBlood, the winner is you - I must confess that I don't have enough patience to try and one life this. The player-killing stage 5 and 6 are especially frustrating :)

Salamander 612,400 PSX 1-6

I was to the point I was so fearful of losing a ship, I was dodging my own missiles. Ah well, 4th place is better than no place at all.

As well this may have been a luck run as Salamander normally kicks my ass.

Salamander Version D MAME Plus! with shot autofire (setting 6), and missile mapped to the shot button.

Ed Oscuro - 470,500 - 1-4 - MAME

I see the game's appeal, but the execution...

The big issue here now is whether the PSP version is different enough to be warranted into its own scoreboard?

As far I understand they are just like PS1 versions.. but I havent played them enough to be sure.

Opinions, anyone?
