Gradius & Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou [Arcade/Famicom/NES]

With Zach Keene's permission I'm gladly going to take over this one (as well as Gradius III & Gaiden, will do that later). The old thread can be found here. Many thanks to Zach for maintaining it for over 10 years!

While the general structure will stay the same, I'm going to expand this one a little bit, namely by adding:

- A table for Nemesis, the arcade game.

- Separate tables for the different types/weapon arrays in Gradius II. I will keep the overall table as well and I'm not going to further divide the table for the shield since that seems a bit excessive. Scores without any known type are only going to appear on the overall table.

- A table for Vulcan Venture. The only difference just might be the extend setting, might investigate that further! I don't expect much activity for it, but I'll split by type, as well. Not going to create a bunch of empty boards for now, though.

I suppose I could also add some boards for non-default difficulties, but I'd personally like to keep it at that. If someone really wants to play on something other than Normal & regular extend intervals (30,000/every 80,000 in Gradius, 50,000/every 100,00 in Nemesis, 20,000/every 150,000 in Gradius II and finally 20,000/every 70,000 in Vulcan Venture) I'm not going to protest against it.

If you are playing Gradius and Gradius II on the PSP, please make sure that "Hit Size" is set to "Normal"!

In any case, please post scores as such:

Have to let this one sink in. If there is one game where I wanted to get in first place, it'd be this one.

...

Loop 5 moai herding doesn't work in the same manner anymore, the upper one spews out a single moai right at the end, thus blocking your way quite efficiently.

Well done! Would love to see a video!

Did you end up getting to use those recovery strategies you've been working on?

Thanks! I'll try to push it a little bit further, I think, but there will be videos (too long for one, I'm afraid, this credit was already 2 hours and 20 minutes long) eventually. I learned quite a lot just from this run and had a few deaths out of unfamiliarity, would be neat to iron those out (I was entirely wrong on "sealing" suicide bullets, for example, there is no such thing in this game, apparently; I sat on top of a ducker during the Club section and got promptly murdered - you will have to cease fire on higher loops no matter what). Another thing that definitely needs adjusting is the moai boss - it's possible to get 100,000 points out of him in every loop but I only get peanuts. There's some way to make him angry in the first loop so that he spits out countless little moai heads, yet I'm not sure how to trigger it. At first I thought it is rank-related, however even with four options (actually tested that out just for this run, played with three options and three speed-ups the rest of the way) it doesn't work. If I could get the safespot to work I would also get a similar amount of points for all the subsequent loops, not only boosting my score, but also granting me extra lives.

Yes, checkpoint recovery came into play, that was the most satisfying part. Mostly in the first stage which is completely understandable due to the massive amount of lava dragons, but also one during the cube section in stage 3, one in the final checkpoint in stage 4 (in loop 5, no less, that was amazing!) and several on Club on various loops. And I usually got every checkpoint down in the first or second attempt, that was very edifying. Moai boss checkpoint recovery also needs some work, outside from that I should be theoretically able to loop the game forever now (if it weren't for exhaustion, of course).

I believe Gradius V is the only Gradius where you can seal suicide bullets.

Totally insane score there, supreme work!

This shall be my run. The best credit I've ever had in anything. I was really drained at the end and died a lot of horrendous deaths in loop 6, but I expected such. Was great to hear one more "YOU NEED SOME PRACTICE!" for good measure. I'm going to divide this into three videos, two loops for each, it'll take a few days, but I want to say it's worth it. :)

I'm not quite going to stop here, however, I really feel like getting the first place for the other types as well, should be fun to discover some more facets! I'll probably upload a video for the last successful loop for each one of those instead of the entire run, what do you guys say?

Phenomenal. When are you getting to the sixth loop of Gradius III?

To bad the score wraps around once you hit 10 mil. Getting a counterstop in a Gradius game would be godly.

Sounds good - I can imagine it'd get brutal encoding+uploading successive multi-loop runs. Maybe a "highlight reel" approach to earlier loops could be useful, if there's stuff you want to showcase from those? Along those lines, if you ever want a clip giffed for easy reference, let me know anytime.

Regardless, congrats on nailing that run! Truly, you embody that little smiley's ineffable passion like few others can. Image

You guys truly are the best, thank you so much! :D Videos are up now: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3. Lots of rambling in the video descriptions as per usual.
Shepardus wrote:When are you getting to the sixth loop of Gradius III?
I did that last year. Image All kidding aside: while getting more loops in the first game and Gaiden is a more interesting project for me I'm still interested in pushing III AC further. It's unfortunately very inaccessible when it comes to that, for several reasons:

- It's the only game in the main series (perhaps even the entire series, but I haven't played some of the MSX/Gameboy/... titles) where you start each subsequent loop with whatever you got equipped from the loop before that. This sounds like a good deed at first, but then you realise that you have to make it to the first stage with all options no matter what. The problem is that a) getting past that ungodly regenerating cell wall with all four options is extremely awkward and b) if you granted yourself the wrong amount of options at the wrong time you get an option thief right at that section which will immediately kill the credit. Making it past the tunnel at the end is also not quite trivial.

- The crystal stage tests your patience. Truth be told: unless you get extraordinarily unlucky you've a reliable chance to get past it due to all the extra lives you'll have amassed at that point - for as long as you can play it right. Chances are you start to crumble after a few deaths, and high loop recovery in this stage is very challenging.

- Bubble stage can kill runs in a fraction of a second. Truly impossible checkpoint recovery with lots of aggravating hit detection, blazing fast bubbles and suicide bullets don't coalesce well.

I'll keep in mind if it ever becomes pertinent, thanks! :)

Gradius - Arcade

Perikles - 3,732,200 - 9-4 - MAME

Hm, hm, hm! Wanted to terminate the credit after dying a few times in 1-7 (...), luckily persevered. Got cowardly after a while because my stage 1 volcano positioning is not so safe after all and I wasn't sure how to handle the high loop rock behaviour. Fell apart in loop 9, recovered in the first three stages and got crushed by one of the most disgusting checkpoints in Gradius history. I think I'll leave it at that for now.

Run is up: Part 1, Part 2. Usual observations/reflexions/harangues in the video descriptions. I specifically want to mention loop 8 where I accidentally max out the speed which has some interesting effects on option spacing.

Great job, Vludi, I knew you would prevail. :) I'll go back to Gradius II soon, as well, and I'm certainly also going to pick type 1 (type 2/3 seem like inferior versions of 1/4, respectively), probably with the shield for variety. Always had a soft spot for this classic selection!

Gradius - Famicom

Image

Perikles - 9,999,990 - 15-ALL

Had an irresistible urge to get some 8-bit Gradius action today. Activated a fourth speed-up by accident in loop 5 only to find out that it's extraordinarily useful for some swift option placements to take out moais and the hatches in the final stage. This time I methodically handled checkpoint recovery, I died almost everywhere at some point in time, but never lost too many lives in the process.

I also have to praise the quality of this port once more. It's very rewarding to loop the game several times due to its tweaks in terms of scoring (get points for power-up capsules, skip the fourth stage and get a substantial reward for doing so, bigger enemies are generally worth a lot, you'll get 100,000 points at the end of a loop) and I think they made a fantastic effort with the stages where they had to cut the vertical scrolling. Turrets are in adequatly mean positions and fire ceaselessly from loop 4 onwards, so you have to take appropriate measures. The rapid-fire laser is also genuinely fun to use, cuts through enemies like they're out of papier-mâché. Double is arguably better here than it is in the arcade game (especially in the moai & final stage) since the laser doesn't have the huge hitbox anymore, although it's not nearly as strong as it is in the PCE port.

On another Gradius-related note: finally got myself a Wii and a Wii points card so that I can play Gradius ReBirth! Can't wait for this stuff to arrive (I also will have to see if I need another controller, I do have a Gamecube controller here but don't like it very much). I'm such a Gradius fanboy.

Only 101k more points and a stage further, although I do think I've gotten to the end of 7 before. Nearly beat Covered Core although its a longer battle with ripple laser. I believe the loop is in sight if I can stick with it for now.

Just a suggestion, do you mind to separate the scores between II AC and x68k? Though the gameplay are mostly same, x68k version has few enemy AI alterations and extend intervals (20k/every 70k).

Old score from last October. Didn't post it because I was waiting to get a clear first, but it turns out I cleared with a lower score than this. I might have gotten a (slightly) higher score than this but didn't save it because I wasn't keeping track of my non-clear scores. Motion to rank stage over score! :P

Impossible! Wish we can do that in the Arcade Version.
At this rate, I won’t be interested into shmups anymore. I am no longer going to be active in this forum from now on. I am more interested into Kemono Friends, rhythm games, D4DJ, Puzzle Games, Hololive, and Pretty Cure.

Farewell.

10 million has been achieved in both Gradius I and II arcade:
Gradius I (apparently this game keeps counting past 10 million)
Gradius II (this also keeps counting after 10 million but can't display more than seven digits)
