Aero Blasters/Air Buster [Arcade/PCE/MD]

Post by Perikles »

Since Psikyo_Ball doesn't seem to be active any more (I wrote him a message in April, so he should have gotten a notification about that) I'll take over the old thread. It can be found here: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=38780

I know for certain that the US and the JP MD/GEN versions are identical and I'm also pretty sure that there are no differences between the PCE and the TG-16 ports - does someone have information about the arcade original?

In any case, default settings and one credit only.

Please post your scores like this (plus whatever might be important as far as the arcade game is concerned):

Player - Score - Stage - Version

Man, what a relief! I was clownishly thinking it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to get a better score only to get creamed over and over again. First the game starts to act up on me again and just freezes on stage 4 or 5. Then those irritating globes constantly spawn right on top of my ship, thus terminating credits instantly. Last but not least the first part of the final stage proved to be the drudgery it really is: lose a life here and your score is finished. Gotta have full firepower to shoot defenceless blocks. Anyway, I still had a lot of enjoyment doing this. I'm really glad I don't have to be this wary with the game anymore, though. :)

Looks like I'm the Aero Blaster master now! I have a feeling, however, that bosses don't time out even in the arcade version, which would mean that you could milk them forever. Not all that interested to investigate further, though.

What's really shocking is how much harder the 16-bit ports are compared to the arcade original, especially the PCE conversion. How come that the arcade game is the only one to hand out regular extends? Why on earth is that maze with the iron bars such a nightmare on the PCE with the violently shaking screen even though it is a leisurely cruise in its orginal form? Is there a reason why the final boss is such a pushover here and so brutal elsewhere? Those materializing orbs are much worse in other versions, too. Very, very mysterious.

Yes everything flew off the screen when I died (to the big ship that takes lots of hits) so we get some blank clouds. lol

Back when this was new, it was my one new game of the summer. I put in a couple hundred hours at least and could get to the second loop pretty consistently. Took a few days to relearn everything but I remembered quite a bit.

Congratulations on a tough (the toughest as far as I'm concerned, even) 16-bit clear nonetheless! The final stage with its feral screen shifting and moving iron poles is not for the faint of heart - why the good people over at Kaneko thought that they had to make their arcade game much harder when bringing it to the home consoles, I would like to know.

It remains to be seen whether or not this thread will be taken over.

Lost two lives. One life lost on stage-4 (due to rank). One life lost on stage-5 (due to rank again).
