Ikaruga [NEW]

Post by Blinge »

Hi everyone, welcome to the new hi score thread for Ikaruga.

Huge thankyou to Zakk for running the thread thus far! The old thread worked just fine so I'll be doing it in almost the same format.

Submit scores in this format:

- Game version - Difficulty - Name - Score - Stage - Max Chain (if known)

Indicate if you're using prototype mode please.

On the offchance that people aren't aware:

Scores submitted are to be played on the game's default settings - 3 lives, no continues, default extend settings.

DC = Dreamcast
GC = Gamecube
PC = Steam release which is out soon! so maybe we'll see an influx of pc players.

Old thread locked and such Blinge. And to clarify, does the score board above in this thread include scores from the last thread that were posted but never added to the old thread's score-board?

And good work on asking for the images. When I run score boards I'd never absolutely insist on it (for example, if a member has already submitted plenty of times with photos, or they really don't have a way of getting the image), but especially if it's a very high score, it's great to get one. It's your thread, of course, so you;re welcome to insist upon it.

And thanks so much to blunge for taking this one on! Hopefully once people see that we again have a regularly updated Ikaruga high-score thread, hopefully people will start playing and submitting scores again!

Updated. Cheers Ciox!

I'm now accepting scores from the Steam release, and putting them in the same table as Dreamcast and Gamecube. This is after reading the Steam version thread; the general consensus is that scoring is faithful to the original.
Please speak up if there's any evidence to the contrary.

Not an april fools, I'm having a scorepost for Ikaruga!

DC - Normal - Plasmo - 30,679,080 - A - 184

Image

Highlights:
-Chainbreak in chapter 1 costing me 300k.
-Flew into a wall in 3-1.
-Random chainbreak in 4-3.
-111c in chapter 5 is a damn rare chain. No idea how I've managed that one.

But yeah, took back the german Ikaruga highscore after 10 years or so. A winner is me.

PC - Normal - Mastermx - 14,143,090 - 5 - 87

This run went reasonably well, lost at that crystal thing at the end. Never seen it's patterns before and it really caught me off guard.

I know I can do better than this, but I might take a break from Ikaruga for a while. Ikaruga is not your normal shmup, what I love most about shmups is dodging, and the polarity system in this game confuses the bejeezuz out of me. The best part of Ikaruga for me, is fighting Tageri. Beating Tageri feels just so damn good! It is by far the best boss battle in the game. I would advise anyone playing this game to atleast feel the pleasure of such a well designed boss. Too bad I can't say this for bosses 3 and 4, who just drive me up the wall with frustration.

GET OUT :x

Nah really man, you're so close. If you keep doing full runs you'll get good enough at your route to either beat the final boss or have enough lives to carry you to that 1cc! keep at it YO

I've added a Dot Eater section from ACSeraph's suggestion over at the Operation Quickening thread so we can all suck (enemy bullets) at Ikaruga together..
..It's definitely not so i can shove myself in at top spot initially =P

Decided to do some Dot Eater due to the new board and that it really doesn't matter what version you're playing for that category(I was on 360, it's on the 360 Dot Eater leaderboard)

360- Dot Eater Normal- Enigma- 617,300 -Stage 3

I have some previous experience with Dot Eater, so it wasn't too long to get this. I haven't practiced stage 3, 4, or 5 with Dot Eater, so it was obviously a disaster. Didn't die in the first 2 stages. Could have gotten a little higher if I wasn't a wuss in stage 2 by sticking to the safespots and doing multiple in between the boxes stuff instead.

Maybe I should actually practice the later stages and maybe the first 2 so I don't lose as many points.

And just got a Dot Eater on Stage 3 in single stage select. Now if only I could do it without missing twice or even once, but that speed section. Still, maybe I could do a Stage 4 run soon, though I don't know if I could get past stage 4 for a while since that is ridiculous without shooting, or even in general. I may have to actually look up a replay for Dot Eater stage 4 and 3. 4 for the whole stage and 3 for the speed section.

only 74 Dot Eater clears of stage 3 on 360 leaderboard. Okay, let's check stage 4's, only 19. Stage 5, only 24 entires. Not sure what stages the All Stages leaderboard ones reach, but obviously only 19 of those could have even possibly been past Stage 4 if even that. Of course, I'm not sure how many people may have tried this on other versions, but I guess those stage clear statistics say something about the difficulty. Stage 1 and 2 have too many for it to be worth checking. That's for Normal difficulty, it was like 2 clears and 3 clears for stage 4 and 5 on Hard.

Edit:

360- Dot Eater Normal - Enigma- 721,900- Stage 3

Made a stupid mistake on stage 2 boss. Also made a mistake early stage 3, but that probably gained me more points than I lost because odds are I wouldn't have gotten to stage 3 midboss or boss anyway to get more points.

First Easy 1cc. I always mess up the last pattern of the crystal so the only reason I cleared was because I got a surprise extend off of Tageri. I would like to push past 20M but I think I need to hit S ranks on all stages first.

Thank you Blinge your words of encouragement, helped me achieve that 1cc. Unfortunately my score was not higher, it was a couple hundred points short.

Messed up many chains in that run. Tbh I can only chain stages 1, 2 and 5. And some parts of 3 and 4. Guess I'll have to learn to chain lol.

Got 30,7mill with a million chainbreaks and one death in the very last second of the TLB. I won't even bother.

It's not that this game is particularly difficult or anything. Please give me a satisfying highscore for once! :x

So yelling at the shmup gods does help! Check this out:

DC - Normal - Plasmo - 32,201,780 - A - 206

Image

Stage-by-stage breakdown:

Ch1: 3,977,170 - 125c (missed one chain)
Ch2: 5,967,450 - 193c
Ch3: 6,345,000 - 206c (one very stupid death at the boss)
Ch4: 6,683,740 - 148c (one rather costly chainbreak)
Ch5: 5,653,620 - 114c

So while I can surely improve this score, I'm quite happy for now. Despite the death everything else went alright.

My method of dealing with uzura is to bring each section down to as little hp as possible, and then to start releasing like crazy. It works most of the time.

Do what mastermx does but focus on one colour,
for instance I'll go black and try and take out all the white ones, switching fast and sitting directly in front of each turret so i wont be hit by the other ones.
By the time the last white turret is destroyed, the black ones will be on low/mid health, a couple of full charges will destroy them and you should already be at max gauge.
This will be when the boss is firing the full streams so you can sit in white and just hammer the release/missile button. Make sure you're still dodging the black shots though!

If you're not feeling confident, let the wheel go through another cycle before taking out the last white, so you can get one more round of safe damage on the black turrets.

Of course, this is far from optimal for scoring - usually it leaves about 54 on the clock

I guess I might be done with Easy. Maybe. At least this was pretty much the run I was after. Messed up the end of st1 a bit and a chain break at st2. Death at the last second, but that was exactly what I always expected would happen so I'm not disappointed.

I could reach 29M with these routes but that would require an almost perfect run.
