If anyone is interested in nominating games to include in the poll for the next SSLs:
  1. send your choices to me via PM, in order of most to least preferred
  2. I'll just pick the nominees from those titles that I receive
  3. I'll give priority to those that are placed higher in the rankings and those that haven't had nominated games included in any of the polls yet
  4. In the event that I still have trouble filling up slots for the poll, I'll just pick the games to include myself.

FYI: I'm currently having trouble with gathering the nominations for the next SSL (either the people I'm waiting on are not coming online or can't think of anything to nominate), so let's just do it this way:

Got a few credits in today, took a while to figure out how the mechanics work but i'm enjoying it now. Must stop running into bullets while over-reaching for items though, it's gone man, just let it go!

Updated the scores on the OP. Only 8 scores so far, but scores are still good until around the end of the week.

I myself have not had a lot of time to play yet, but I'll get one in eventually.

Oh, and people don't forget to vote on the poll ;) It's a two-game race right now, Cho Ren Sha 68k vs Sexy Parodius.

Charge up your attacks to collect items. Watch the bar at the bottom to see the strength of the charge. A level 1 attack will produce level 1 items. A level 8 attack will produce level 8 items. If you do charge up a level 8 attack, this will gradually power-down, producing lower level items while it's doing so.

You complete a set by collecting all 8 items in that set (e.g. food or shoes, which are the easiest to get from the first couple of levels). Completing a set will give you a x2 multiplier on all future items, completing two sets will give you a x3 multiplier, etc.

If your attack power/magic/bombs are at a certain level, then you can obtain secret items from bosses, mid-bosses and some larger enemies.

e.g. lv3 shot and magic, lv5+ charge attack on the first boss will give you a Ruby (100k)

For the stage 2 mid-boss, you need four bombs in stock - a charge attack against it will give you a Legend Sword (100k)

That's more or less the basics. Not really sure what's not to 'get' about it.

I'm guessing the rank increases significantly when you have a high multiplier? I've made it to Stage 5 before, though it was only x2 or x3 for most of that run. I had a x5 multiplier in a recent run and got my ass kicked on Stage 4.

When I said that I don't understand the game, I meant that I don't know how to obtain all the items or how to keep track of everything I've collected. I know that's not clear from what I said, but the score I posted should make it clear that I do understand the basics of the game. Well, at least you weren't being a twat about it, unlike chempop.

I think I got both the Ruby and Legend Sword in my run. That doesn't mean that I understand how to get every item in the game.

Well, there's an item drop list in the Strategy section, if that's any help.

I don't think that lists what exactly makes up sets though.

Not sure if there's a way to keep track of what you've gotten.

Well, it kind of does, e.g. for the first few enemies: Bladed Disk, drops Accessory, i.e. it can drop a lv1 to lv8 Accessory depending on the strength of your charge. Simple item sets can be completed just from popcorn enemies. Small tanks and planes drop Food and Shoes. There are enough of these on the first stage to complete both sets if you time your charges correctly.

Special items require a bit more planning and timing, but most stuff should be in that list. I see it only goes up to Stage 4 though - I think it might be possible to complete all sets by then, though?

EDIT: You can have at least 12 out of 15 sets completed by the end of Stage 4, based on this video:

The Stage Bonus screen will show you the table of contents for each set and are filled in depending on how many items you have in each set. It's also possible to press Start+A and cycle through the sets in-game, though this can be somewhat distracting...

Sorry, I assumed you probably knew the basics but I thought I'd post that anyway just in case other people hadn't figured it out yet. I had a bit of a Eureka moment when I realised, 'Hang on, level 3 attacks produce level 3 items. Why didn't I work that out sooner?'

Of course, after I realised that, I haven't had a decent run since... :)
