Oh dear, Windows 10. 10 is a no man's land where very little runs properly. I don't have it, unfortunately.

Hmm, damn. I'm running Win 10 64-bit, if that's any help; are you on 32-bit?

I haven't tried those; do you think something like AppLocale could help it run? And yeah, it just doesn't start. The screen goes black, then there's a white flash; I can hear the menu background sounds of the demo playthrough, but I can't see anything, and I'm not sure if keypresses register...
I posted this before, and i know you mentioned trying the compatibility settings too, but this is what i did, and worked.

I have Window 10 x64 too, and Blue Wish Resurrection would not run in fullscreen (a black window would show, but quit afterwards).
The fix to this, is to run in compatibility mode with Windows Vista (you could run in Windows XP compatibility mode too, but it forces you to run with administrator privileges, which is a bother).
A similar thing happens with Eden's Edge, in which the game does run, but at 3~4 FPS.
The fix is the same as BWR+, except it will only work in fullscreen mode (in windowed mode, I still get 3~4 FPS).

EDIT: By the way AppLocale doesn't work in Windows 10 anymore (at least i couldn't get it to work). Instead i have Locale Emulator, which does the same thing.
You can find more here.

I should mention that with x.x games, i never needed AppLocale to have them work.
The only ones that didn't work are the old ones that use some Flash-like japanese engine, because i always get an error.

Oh, by the way, have you trying editing the screen.txt file to run the game windowed?

Thanks very much for the tips; I've tried it just running it in Vista, Vista SP1, Vista SP2, and XP + admin, and none work :\. I haven't ticked any of the other compatibility settings. I opened screen.txt, but all I see is this:

http://www.ultimaratioregum.co.uk/game/ ... 04/BWR.png

But I assume the 0, 0 at the top is what needs changing; tried changing the first to 1, that did make it windowed, but still all black. Tried changing the second to 1 also, same thing; tried only changing the latter and got a fullscreen failure again. It doesn't do the white "flash" like it does full-screen, but still no progress. Argh! Are there any third-party tools (akin to Dosbox) I could perhaps try?!

Yes, the first number is windowed/fullscreen and the second is sync to VBlank or 60Hz timer (not important here).

That's pretty odd. Both BWR and BWR+ work pretty well on my computer.

Have you tried running in 16bit mode (ticking the "reduced color mode" to 16bit color in the compatibility tab)?

Probably unnecessary, but is your graphics card driver up to date (although i don't think this should be a problem, but you never know)?

Also, in the executable folder, there should be an "AppLog.txt" file that's created when you run the game. Can you post it (or upload it)?
This is an application initialization log (it logs DirectX initialization, etc), and it might show where the problem occurs...
It's in Shift-JIS encoding, so it might not show properly here, though. You can translate it to english using Google Translate, and then post it here, if you can.

Lastly you can try to disable Anisotropic filtering, VSync and that sort of thing in your graphics card control panel (Catalyst Control Center for ATI cards). Don't know if it will work, but some people report that disabling anti-aliasing here made some old games work...

Good luck.

EDIT:

There's something i use for the first Windows Touhou games (from 6 to 9, i think) to make them work properly.
It's a DirectX8 to DirectX9 converter.
I don't know if it will help you, but from those Touhou games only started to not work properly after upgrading to Windows 10.
I guess Windows 10 doesn't properly support DirectX8 or something (which i think BWR uses).
You can try to use this and see if it works (you don't lose anything anyway).
You can find it here.
You basically extract the d3d8.dll and the enbconverter.ini files into your .exe folder.

Hey!

Sorry I've been absent a bit; I've been away, then back and snowed under with work.

Thanks *so much* for all of these suggestions. I checked Windows Update for new drivers but there weren't any missing that I could see, then went into device manager and updated the graphics card there, but that altered nothing; tried 16 bit mode with every compatibility setting I could see; also tried running in administrator with various settings. The idea about disabling things in the graphics card control panel is interesting, and I tried disabling loads of stuff, but to no avail! I have Intel HD Graphics 4600, and nvidia geforce GT 730m, installed. I also tried copying those files into the BWR folder where the executable is, but again, no dice, sadly :(.

I fear we're running out of ideas! However, I've just uploaded the file, and here it is. Sadly it is very garbled, and I couldn't get any kind of translation tool to work, unfortunately.

Ah! Well that's rather odd, since they are all present in the /bmp folder! Weirdly, though, I can preview them, whereas I couldn't on my Win 7 laptop, though I doubt that means anything. See the folder below:

Boom! New world record in BWR :D. Was a tough battle that took me some time to get, but I can definitely improve it by another ~200k or so, which I'll try to do in the next couple of months; with some more optimal movement on stage 1 another 100k can be found, and I'm sure another 150k can be found across the other four levels by killing some of the tougher enemies closer up. It can definitely be pushed to 47m. Played in Original with Blue Peace (of course). Here's the score:

Here's my analysis/commentary on noteworthy parts of the run on my blog:

It's been a while...just popping in to say hi!

BWR - Original - Blue Peace
Emuser - 47,033,490 - ALL - Guard Off

I completely freaked out in stage 5, I honestly think that 48M is barely possible without mistakes.

Hello, everyone, and hello again, Despatche! :)

I've come here today to submit the score of my 1st Hell Mode ALL! Clear of Blue Wish Resurrection that I got, as of earlier today back at noon! I used Blue Wish for this one! :D

BWR - Hell - Blue Wish
VioletHatPurple - 26,881,170 - ALL! - Guard ON - Video - Screenshot - Replay File

Very pleased to have gotten this one down! This makes Blue Wish Resurrection the 3rd x.x game (with Eden's Edge on Doom Mode and Eden's Aegis on Hell Mode (Wait off) being the other 2 games) where I got the ALL! Clear on the hardest difficulty they each had to offer! :)

Ohmygosh you guys are posting some great runs, I love it. Absolutely ridiculous Original Peace scores! <3

In case you weren't aware Purp, there's a huge score bonus per life remaining at the end of the game if you have Auto Guard turned off. A lot of people playing this probably weren't aware at first when scores were first getting posted, but for competitive scoring you will eventually benefit from turning it off.

Yeah, I've heard about that bit concerning the Auto Guard for some time now. I'm thinking of doing more stuff for Blue Wish Resurrection, and I like to do something with the Auto Guard off. I do have to say this much, though: I can't say I'm too keen on doing Blue Wish Resurrection Hell Mode with the Auto Guard off, at least, for the immediate future, if I had to say so myself, haha. :P

But thanks for letting me know about that, BareKnuckleRoo! I am quite considering doing something on Blue Wish Resurrection with the Auto Guard off. :)

I actually played 'em? Got tired of vsync lag and went full timer. But now I get those annoying blips, grrr.

Resurrection - Heaven - Blue Wish
Despatche - 36,685,880 - ALL - Off (On)

But how, this was garbage! I didn't actually expect this to be #1 so I don't have my replay, sorry. But it's still garbage! I missed like all the cancels and played stage 3/4/5 pretty safe. Someone beat this, please.

Plus - Heaven - Blue Wish
Despatche - 46,624,820 - ALL - Off/Off (On)

Yeah, the market is pretty thoroughly cornered here. But if Emuser can get pretty close to a wait score, anyone can probably do 50M no wait at least, right?

You know what? I disagree with the claim that wait makes the game more unique/interesting. If you turn wait off, you really get to see the differences between the versions. I'm pretty sure boss 3 has less health, Heaven midboss 5 and boss 5 seem slightly harder, all the "special medium" enemies, a bazillion more chests, etc. Maybe Aegis is intended for wait, but Edge and BWR really aren't and you should try to play v1.21/turn it off. If wait enabled wasn't the default setting for BWRP, I would probably ban it. Then again, the original threads would have discouraged it, and people would have used it less anyway.

Also, Hope sucks. Points shmoints, Twinkle is much better to just use on a very basic level. Can't wait for Desire in general, whatever crazy form it takes. Extremely cool layered boss health bars. Good vsync! Two pretty weird new designs? What happened to poor Eclipse?

Oh right, this game has that stage 5 exploit with the bombs. Does Plus still have that?

Whoa, that doujin BBS is cool, it's got a replay uploader and everything. Guess I'll submit there sometime? Depends on if I die to these hurricanes. Check it out, it's got lots of cool stuff:

I'M BACK

I have finally built the determination to throw my face at this game again and grind until I got something that I was aiming for. I was 700K away from hitting the 40M extend, if I want to improve at this point it's going to take serious stage select practice and lots of comparisons between runs to see where I can improve at all. I made some small mistakes in this run but nothing to the extent of 700K that I'm aware of currently.

Thank you sir!

Yea 2018 was largely involved with not really shmupping hardly at all, but I finally had a blast coming back to this game again. I'll definitely be pushing to hit the 40M extend but I couldn't say how long it will take to reach that point if it is possible. Once that happens, BWR+ Original will pretty much be dead. I might dabble more with Hell scoring afterward since I never did give that much of a try.

A long overdue goal, I think BWR+ Original is finally done. I literally trembled for a solid 10 minutes after this was over. Several nerve racking close calls and I'm amazed I survived to the end without getting hit in some places. A lot of runs were spent ramming a bullet trying to get an optimal cancel and being a moment too soon and dying for it.

Thanks again,

After insane amounts of grinding in a short period of time lately, I learned a number of things that no one seemed to try before such as bombing the swarm near the end of stage 5. A few notes of interest of some stuff I've learned since my replay two weeks ago:

*Stage 1 in general is a real PITA to optimize. Stage 1 boss is for some reason the hardest boss to optimize in this game. It's actually the only boss with destructible parts, there are actually better strats for slightly more points I didn't use but the effort to reward ratio is so stupid that it isn't worth going for so I just did the easier thing. I never sat down and realized how annoying it is to fully optimize which involves hugging the center with homing shot and not actually destroying it's side pods until the 2nd phase then destroying them both at key times.
*Near the end of stage 3 with the final bullet cancel ship in the middle is actually way easier than I would've ever imagined if you just let go of homing shot for a couple moments.
*Speedkilling the bullet cancel at the end of the cliff on stage 2 and getting the final ingot chest asap is a fair chunk more profitable than holding homing shot for tick points.
*Optimizing stage 5 isn't quite as bad as someone might think, there are a few parts such as the dual ingot turrets at the beginning that take some practice, but it felt pretty incredible to just sit down and really learn how to improve this stage. I spent about 4 hours just grinding and testing and keeping tallies of gem counts at certain points in stage practice this weekend. The last thing I never learned is the first big ship bullet cancel before the swarm, if you kill it while it flys away and some other enemies are also shooting, you'll get a bigger bullet cancel but you have to keep this thing alive for a while and is pretty hard, for how hard it is the reward isn't too high and wasn't necessary for me to actually get to the illusive 40M mark.
*The swarm at the end of stage 5 if you use a weak bomb right when the fast enemies come flying in and then point blank a lot of stuff while you're still invincible, you'll net way more points than what the bomb is worth at the end stage tally.
*This also lead me to realize the way points are awarded in the end, with the immediate point gains from gems obtained from bombing plus how they get added to your counter too, you practically lose nothing in the end tally bombing the stage 5 boss when there's lots of bullets on screen. Really you lose a few 1000 points per bomb but at the point I was way too scared of messing up. 2nd phase of the stage 5 boss you don't want to bomb if you can help it to time the bullet cancel when it's attacks begin to repeat however.

There are definitely improvements possible of several hundred thousand points, but to be honest until someone else comes along that beats my score, there's not any real point for me to go back and try to optimize more. I played Hell for a couple hours earlier but I just wasn't having as much fun as I would be doing all the usual Original strats. Hell half defeats the whole point blanking aspect thanks to revenge bullets and some stuff becomes too hard so you just have to play it like a normal survival game. I thought there'd be room to incorporate some scoring tricks but some stuff doesn't seem possible like it would be in Original. For as long as I've played this game, deep down inside I lied to myself even during the STGWeekly episode where I considered my 60M Wish score a perfect run. Deep down I knew that Peace would be the only ship that I would ultimately say that about some day, but I put off using it for reasons I don't quite understand. Now though I feel like I've reached the pinnacle of this game and there's nothing left for me to do. I think this is where I put down the flag and consider myself victorious over BWR+.

EDIT: A pastebin of notes related to my 67M run for reference: https://pastebin.com/hqVbDKb4
If anyone needs clarification or details on a more specific thing, let me know.

Nothing special. Auto-guard still a crutch for me.
