Radiant Silvergun (ARC/SAT/XBLA) 2013

Post by Zaarock »

Image
Radiant Silvergun (1998) is Treasure's first shmup, and the predecessor to even more famed Ikaruga, both produced and directed by Hiroshi Iuchi. the primary inspiration for Silvergun is stated to be Image Fight(1988) by IREM. the game features a multi-weapon system that often encourages tactical weapon choices and positioning over the usual shooting and dodging. It's disliked by many players for mechanics that tie scoring to survival, and liked by equally as many for its audiovisual flare and epic(though somewhat JRPG-ish) feel.

Today the game finds itself on three platforms: Sega's ST-V arcade hardware, Sega Saturn, and Xbox Live Arcade. Let the traffic light chaining begin!

Some replays and some patterns are old but in total is about 39.5M.
On my last hiscore, stage 5 was 16.2M witch is the best I can do.

This is crazy :
- scratch the smallest pink bullet and ennemy
- shoot every ennemy, even if it is not part of a chain, to get points and weapon bonuses
- kill each boss with homing plasma at min power to maximize weapon bonuses
- get a full 100.000 chain on that stage 5 where I cant even see the color of the turrets
- kill Xiga by simply holding A+B, manipulating the stick with your feet ?

Who thought some guy can achieve this level of perfection ? Congrats

I've uploaded for you my best run recorded (39.2).
Unfortunately, I've made 2 big mistakes on stage 2C and 2E. about 200k miss.
Stage 3, 4, 5 & 6 are very clean.

I was encouraged to post this here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p21uXwZjWXQ

Code: Select all

Saturn version, Arcade mode, Stage 2 route
pja - 6,282,420 - ALL - A20 B13 C19
This was played on an emulator (Mednafen 1.26.1).

I was going for the clear, and not much for score though - this does happen to be my top score, but I had some runs close to 1CC that were worse by 1mil (missing the big chain in Stage 2) - it wouldn't be even top 20 on my own leaderboard :P

Glad I can finally add a clear here! I've wanted to 1cc this game for years, even owning the Saturn copy and putting dozens of hours onto it. However I could never quite clinch it, making it to stage 5 at best. However, I started the last two weeks experimenting with mednafen, which has some pretty good response time (apparently 3 frames of lag, if the Steam port thread is to be believed), which makes it very responsive, and maybe the best way to play the "arcade" version on PC. With save-states and a few dedicated nights of practice, I did what I couldn't do over 5 years of on-and-off practice. Though I suppose those dozens of hours meant I had internalized and memorized a lot of the game already.

This run was almost a no-miss too! I died right during the Stone-Like's final volley, which was very disappointing.

Pretty amazing video all around, that stage 5 chain is seriously nuts, I don't know how you can process all that visual clutter and still make it out alive. Big congratulations my man.

I've been using the video for a few hints and strategies to take on the stage 4 route myself. I don't think I'll be able to do any chaining in stage 5 past the first half of the stage however. I also know I can know easily beat my 2 route score above with a little extra application and effort (stage 4, no question, there is just so much more to gain in that route, maybe I should adjust my goals to 10 million).

My first clear of Radiant Silvergun, a game I wanted to clear for a long time so felt damn nice. Always assumed it to be more difficult than it is.

Watched some educative runs by Mark MSX, STG, EmperorIng, Jaimers, and Ben -- just so cool to see the different approaches to this game.

Yes, stage 5 chaining separates the wheat from the chaff.
