3 lives, extends at 20K and every 80K, Medium difficulty. Saturn version gets its own board. As with every other game in MAME, there's less slowdown, so good luck.

Played on Taito Memories Vol. 2.
This is so much harder than the Saturn version. Also the autofire from my turbo controller wasn't ideal but alas!

I'm amazed you even made it past stage 4. stage 5 and its checkpoints are sheer torture.

Mad props!

I'll replay the Saturn version next to see more objectively how it compares with the PS2

Thanks Emph and chempop.
Just made my first million, lousy run so can do much better.
First run was at 500k in last level with all lives and 3 full bombs blasting the flying squirrels....then I lost my cool and crashed and burned...

Thanks. :)
Im far from done though, latest run I really wasted 4 lives cos of being lazy and a life at the end bonus is 30k points.
One death felt legit though, I was in the middle of the stage 5 factory surrounded by bullets, had blasted off a middle size bomb so everything almost stood still, so during a few seconds I could really inspect the bullet carpet and think "hm, no way out".
Unreal situation.... :?

That's the best, one of the wildest situations in the genre, pretty much exclusive to this game. Gonna echo Kollision, pretty amazing work you're putting in.

Thanks Trap15.

Im also practicing at lunch at work (Mame) and in Mame the slowdown is not correctly emulated.
The pcb can grind to an almost complete stop when there are lots of bullets together with a large bomb, but in mame it keeps on running quite smooth.

Yeah, the game becomes more fun for every time I play it. Cruising through and no bombing stage 4 is a breeze.

Jeez, that was too close for comfort. Reached the fifth stage with all lives, left it with the last. Humiliating! Might try to remedy that at one point, but then again there's an unseemly and rather sad amount of checkpoint milking to be had in this game, anyway...

Cool run.
In stage 5 after the first cliff, if you are at max power you can stay at the top of the screen with autofire to easy clean out the green planes, watch out for some lonely stray bullet.

:o
That is extremely useful to know, thank you very much for your advice (and the kind words)! Those guys are not nice at all, a few runs ended right then and there.

Out of curiosity: are there many spots where bombing yields a lot of points? One time when I used a bomb I noticed that my bullets were apparently hitting an invisible target for a massive boost in score, I'm sure there are lots of secrets in this game. I do know of the checkpoint with all the large blue aircrafts in stage 2, of course, I assume you try to squeeze as much score out of it as possible and then proceed through the rest of the game with your last life (at that point)? How does one achieve almost 2.8m points in this game (as per the WR)? It sure is interesting to ponder about the score potential in this game.

Yeah, lots of secret places to bomb.
I have not found out yet how to reach 2.8 Mill. I did a practice run with savestates in Mame and reached 1.8 Mill.

At the blue planes I can get close to 800k, then another 100k at the squirrels in stage 5.

Places to remember are:
Bomb first cliff on stage 1 to get 10k.
Checkpoint milk the blue planes in stage 2 to get around 800k. (Maybe more?)
Milk blue helis at stage 2 BOSS, especially good if at high rank.
Bomb crop circle in stage 4 for 10k.
Destroy the tank in stage 4 when it has crashed into the bank to get a full bomb. (MAX power up.)
Bomb first forest to the left in stage 5 to release the squirrels (Garegga flamingo style) bomb the squirrels with circle motion bombs to cash in.
In stage 5, when you have destroyed one wing on the big planes, wait for it to shoot the spread projectile, shoot the spread projectile before it detonates to get 10k. (Still testing this.)
Stage 5 boss, when it dies it fires a spread projectile, do the same as above.

...I think I am missing something in stage 3...

After 600k in score the rank in this game really shines. :P

Nice. :)

I also found a superplay with score over 2mill on the pcb.
No special tricks, just some really skillful milking of the blue planes in stage 2 and the long canyon stretch in stage 5.

2nd credit of super baby mode-- idk what they were thinking with this port, but the difficulty is way too much of an 180 compared to the arcade version. Maybe one day I'll tackle the Arcade: Real War ver.
