Bloodreign - 363,100 - ROUND 4 - No - Famicom

This version needs love, but it feels slower and easier than it's arcade counterpart. I don't expect this score to stay at the top long.

I remember playing this on one of the PSP Capcom collections. Kinda dig the surreal bugginess (heh) of this game.

I really like this game. Enough to bump the topic with a measly score. Fantastic frantic retro.

Never the less, a fun game indeed, and especially with them hidden items within each stage gives it a good touch...

More or less a fortunate coincidence that I played the arcade version. I was playing the Famicom port the other day which just might have the worst flicker in any shmup altogether (external autofire also doesn't work in the port, you have to mash all the way through...) and decided to give the original another try. I played it some years ago on the PS1 and thought it impossible, just like Gun.Smoke, but I got it down really fast this time, I actually played without prior knowledge from stage 12 onwards. :o I feel that clearing Gun.Smoke helped a lot for both games have a similar theme ("core mechanics over memorization"). It's also interesting how Exed Exes doesn't feel that long whilst playing it despite the daunting duration and repetition.

I feel a bit conflicted when I see their name on FC ports. Their worst like Ikari Warriors do indeed suck balls, but I was genuinely warming up to Kyuukyoku Tiger in spite of its slight glitchiness... then I learned it was by them and suddenly didn't feel quite so enthused. Still feel like picking it up sometime. Killer, killer boxart doesn't hurt. It certainly isn't another FC Ikari (or, unrelated, FC Image Fight). Sorry for the OT Patchy.

Good going Perikles, I'm suddenly motivated to revisit this one in proper now. Only played it very briefly before Gun.Smoke trampled me into shape, but I do recall the similarities!

Autofire seems to work fine here... maybe your controller is too fast?

Man am I just crazy or is this game like, absurdly difficult? I admit I am pretty terrible at these games, but geez, this one just makes me feel bad about myself...

But hey no longer have to be last on the leaderboards, so that's something ^^

Come to think of it that previous score of mines is from like, way back in high school or something. Been like almost 20 years... O_o

Really fun game, and quite intense!

SPM - 1,387,600 - 10 - Yes - MAME (Video)

I don't think I'll push it further, 16 rounds take too long.

I had to use the arcade stick's autofire (idk how to use auto on mameui) and it was too fast for good screen control, so I ended up tapping the button for the most part and using the autofire for specific situations (tougher targets or groups of weak ones).

I've just got back to it through Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium. The emulation is good for the game except for one "tiny" omission: the first extend (at 50k) is missing. Maybe it's set to hard under the hood because lowering the difficulty makes that extend to appear and increasing it removes some other extends, who knows!

Anyway, I didn't notice any differences gameplay/scoring-wise between difficulties and/or roms compared to my last run on MAME, and in my opinion that extend is only important for early progression but not so much later on, so here's my score. I don't think I would've got much further with it, since you get another extend at 100k and one at every multiple of 250k, which netted me a total of 9 extends (plus 2 extra lives on Rounds 4 and 8 ). Damn I lost 14 lives in this run! Definitely I would've lost another one sooner than later XD

SPM - 2,206,000 - 12 - Yes - Switch (Exed Exes)

*I played Exed Exes, which shares the same leaderboard as Savage Bees, but tried both and again, didn't notice any difference.

Doesn't this game have super weird "extend queueing" like 1942?

And yeah I'm just waiting for the 10Ms. I'm shocked noone's 10M'd yet actually, considering all the crazy stuff I've seen posted on this forum lately.

Extend queueing? The game only shows up to 5 extra lives but keeps track of all you've got, if that's what you mean (never played 1942).

I find the game deceptively difficult and getting 10M quite a feat! It'd take 2 and a half hours and the game seems hard to route (I at least play it reactively for the most part). It's also rather repetitive, better for casual runs than dedicated grinding, so not many people would be up for it.

Okay so 1942 has a really fucked up extend system. On top of that, versions of the game before the final known version have an oversight where it's possible to get so many points at once that you blow clean through an extend window and actually break the extend system entirely, preventing you from getting extends for the rest of the game. I just wanted to know if Exed Exes wasn't doing something similar.

Well, we live in an era where people will play Tiger-Heli, a game not nearly as interesting as Exed Exes, for over eight hours just to get a 10M. I'm not sure why or how we live in such an era, but we sure do.

No I don't think that ever happens in this game thankfully. You even get two extends at once when you get 500k points for completing round 16.

Yeah crazy times! I like Tiger Heli but I'd rather play Exed Exes for 10M than being stuck in a 12 min loop for hours! Especially taking into account that it's only 3 static stages with a fixed rank after 3 loops. Actually, I'd rather not play for much more than 1 hour any shmup, period.

(Well... if I were good enough to get 10M in my next run I guess I would keep at it... but I'm not and won't grind to achieve it. I don't have it in me)
