This started out as a minigame on the Gunners Broom DVD in 2000 and the final update came in 2003.
2 Minute Mode is unlocked by destroying the end boss in 4 Minute Mode
EXTRA mode is toggled by entering a password at the title screen. You're given the password after scoring at least 80,000 points in 2 Minute Mode or 120,000 points in 4 Minute Mode (HINT: there's a big clue on this page!) Congrats to Gespenst for being the first to unlock it

and to change ship and laser colours enter the following names in Name Entry:

REN (Purple/Black)
CAROL (Red/Red)

Yeah, almost had that Extra mode.
But I think this game's more like risk-reward game if you want to play it for score (i.e you're encouraged to ram through transport ships since they score the most).

What's Extra Mode like?

It's basically the same (either 2 or 4 minutes mode), but with more variety of enemies (and less transport ships) to blow. For example, the 4 minute mode will throw in the boss ship at the very beginning. With ridiculous amount of other enemies, as well as transport ships. I died at the first 30 seconds due to ridiculous carnage :\

The scoring system's pretty different now, each enemy only score 1 point (regardless of type, fortunately there are more popcorns than medium/large enemies, although the barrier ships are truly annoying). Collision damage appears to be doubled as well.
