Supposedly the rank increase from completing item sets is a bit harsher in Great Mahou Daisakusen than in Dimahoo. I doubt it's a very large difference though, if you can play one well you can probably play the other too.

By the way, I read on some japanese sites that completing sets gives you special powers, like shoes makes you a bit faster, and armor makes you htibox a bit smaller, but I've never heard that before and no idea if it's true.

Well, I got 11M with Grimlen on GMD, but I used save states so it doesn't count.

Then I tried without save states and only got to stage 3, a little over 1M for score, lol. I suck at those things now.

I know how to score on this game more or less, but I just don't trust my reflexes those days anymore. :(

There's a discussion about it here. I doubt it's true, and even if it is it's insignificant enough that you can't really tell from watching superplays.

yeah I don't remember and I think I was searching for shippu information at the time so no idea, but it sounds like a rumor anyway.

And the food items helps your progress towards the grocery shopping minigame.

Having played the game a bunch, I would say for certain it's not true. If it were, the effects are insignificant enough that it wouldn't be worth the programming time.
Dimahoo is a fun game.

Hmmm if it did....

Shoes - increased speed
Food - 1up
Ax - adds wider rapid shot
Sword - adds piercing rapid shot
Amulet - stronger magic shot
Staff - stronger magic/charge attack
Rings - stronger bomb
Armor - smaller hitbox
Shield - magic options absorb bullets (like R-type bits)
Treasure - ???

Dimahoo - Golden
Vludi - 5,436,270 - All - 48 Items - Mame

Golden is a powerhouse, more people should try it.
Anyway not a big fan of this game, I'm too bad for it, prefer the older Mahous.

Sorry, haven't looked at this in over a decade! Was curious if the thread was still here - glad to see somebody's maintaining it.

My high score for Karte was on a Japanese Great Mahou Daisakusen PCB. At the time I didn't know that there was a difference in difficulty between the 2 versions.

I think this is my third attempt at getting into this game, and finally it clicked with me. First stage in particular is highly addictive trying to rack up as many sets as possible.

Dimahoo - Miyamoto
DMC - 10,886,890 - Stage 5 - 88 items - Mame

I chose Miyamoto because his charge weapon stays in a fixed location, so I thought it would easier to be consistent early on. A lot of the others characters have free-roaming charge attack that seems unpredictable in the beginning. The challenge is micro-dodging because he is so damn fast but he seems useful later on as he can macrododge entire clusters of bullets.

Dimahoo is a beautiful, but sadistic game!
The game has absolutely destroyed me the last couple of weeks, and my best so far is end of stage 5.
One of the extreme things is trying to have +4 bombs AND empty bomb meter to get all of the secret items.
For instance, if you take one measly bomb fragment too many or one too few at the end of stage three, you're screwed.
And at the same time as you're avoiding further bomb fragments, you're focusing on collecting the fourth bomb while dodging the midboss attacks and trying to remember what rings, armors, and helmets you need

I'm impressed by all the 50+ scores on the boards, because after getting the chests on stage 4, I recognize it's a lot of practice required for every additional million.
After a break, my next aim is maybe something around 40-50 and maybe a clear.

By the way, it's fun to see that SOF-WTN posts new top scores on twitter on an almost daily basis.
Already counter stopped the game with various characters, still going at it. Impressive dedication! https://twitter.com/sof_wtn
