Trying to play this (arcade ver.). I wanna know if it's worth it to just remain stationary without transforming as long as possible to increase the point counter, or if you get more overall by moving around and shooting everything you can.

If the former is true than I must say this has the worst shmup scoring system ever.

Idling doesn't give you that much. As far as I can tell, the best thing to do is simply to mix some idling in with normal play.

MODE -Sega Saturn

SYSTEM/GAME - Sega Saturn (JAP)~Original Store Copy (I paid 250$ for that game.)

NAME - THUNDER FORCE 222

SCORE/STAGE/RANK -2,179,735- ALL - "S" Rank

DIFFICULTY -MANIAC-

Here is the link to my Youtube video for confirmation. The OST is ARRANGED for the most part. I used some voice tracks from "Air Gallet" during the game, you'll notice I added the "Congratulations On Completing Stage 1-6". Since the voice tracks only went to Stage 6 in Air Gallet, I created a different Stage clear saying for 7 and 8. It fits the scenes. Some of the dialogue I created, I had to use single words to form a whole sentence. That was a pain to record, but worth it. Here is a track listing of my OST:

OPENING "Buster Gear" -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.)
SELECT "Select" -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.)
STAGE CLEAR "Stage Clear" -Since this track isn't available on any CD/OST, I had to go into the Arcade Ver. Sound test menu and play the track and record it with .WAV record option on FB Alpha, then make 8 different tracks with the Stage Clear voice from Air Gallet.

Stage 1 "Cyber Fleet" -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.) ~ BOSS "Boiled Kraken" -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.)

Stage 2 "Full Metal Goddess; From "BROKEN THUNDER" DOUJIN Version, not the one on Broken Thunder;project Thunder Force VI" ~ BOSS "Crybringer" -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.)

Stage 3 "Phases 1-1; PHILOSOMA (Self-Arranged; I added a guitar slide in the middle where I think it should've had one) ~ BOSS "W.A.O." -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.)

Stage 4 "Cosmo Babylon;ARRANGED Ver. From "ABSOLUTE AREA;project Thunder Force VI (Self-Arranged; I cut the begining short to flow with the level) ~ BOSS "Blue Dragon; SORCERIAN -ARRANGED BY S.S.H.

Stage 5 "Countdown; -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.) (Self-Arranged; I added a guitar slide as the track goes into full swing. IT DESPERATELY needed one there.)

Stage 6 "Black Rain;ARRANGED by S.S.H. (Self-Arranged; I cut the track to flow with the level better and fit the scene where I cut it at, which is 13:40, and there is alot of dialogue I created to fit the scene/level) ~ BOSS "Evil Destroyer (Thunder Force IV);ARRANGED by F.K."

Stage 7 "Night Sweeper; -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.) (Self-Arranged; Added Voice tracks in begining and timed the dialogue to end just as the main riff in the track and enemies show up...It's perfect) ~ BOSS "Boiled Kraken" -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.)

Stage 8 "Battleship (Thunder Force IV); ARRANGED from 'BEST OF THUNDER FORCE" (Self-Arranged; voice tracks in begining.) ~ BOSS "HYPER DUEL" -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.)

Staff Roll "Negative Energy" -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.)Name Entry "Congratulations!" -Hyper Duel OST (Saturn Ver.)

If there is any questions on as to WHY I die on purpose on Stage 4 BOSS - "BG-00 BLACK ANGEL" - It's because to obtain the best possible amount of coins in Stage 5 with Keith, you NEED to have his gun level on 2. His "SHIP" gun on 2 is more powerful than fully powered up, and his missiles are weak, unlike at full power. This set-up allows Keith to open the boxes in 6 shots and not fully destroy them with his missiles. It took awhile to create a good patteren where I could get the most coin bonuses. In this run I milk it pretty good, but you'll see where I kinda mess up the pattern and I miss the final coin. THIS STAGE IS WHERE YOU MAKE YOUR SCORE. Full meter bonus isn't that important, when measured against the amount of score te coins give. I have to use meter to have a good run on this stage.

Lastly, this run was the CLOSEST I have ever come to achieving a "NO MISS" run.

If there are any questions WHY I died on Purpose on STAGE 4 BOSS...it's because I need to have Keith on GUN level 2, to optimize the coin bonus milking on Stage 5, and as there is no score penalty for dying....

What difficulty were you on? What did you miss to lose your "S" Rank?

I have absolutely no idea of what influences "rank", so I don't know what I missed.

Okay, to achieve "S" rank you must perfect all 8 stages. You must not miss a single enemy. This will give you a Score Bonus at the end of each stage. Missing even one enemy, will lose you the stage bonus and your "S" Rank. Having full overweapon or helpers "Stock" have no effect on the rank, nor does dying, with the exception of using a continue -which you should not do- just enemies. You do not get a bonus for lives stocked up or lives lost, which is a nice gesture from Technosoft. In fact, you HAVE to die with Keith Spader on Black Angel (ST4 Boss) to get the most from the bonus crates in Stage 5 (See My Vid) Play on Maniac is my advice.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plHTLGi5XC4 -This is My Gameplay on MANIAC with BG-01. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH_IcwM_lqo--This Is Icarus' play on NORMAL with BG-02.---ENJOY!

Where do the other points come from? I got perfects on all the stages but I'm still way off the 2.27million. I hear there's a trick on stage 5 to get more orbs? Or is it just a matter of finishing all the stages with the drone helper bonus?

Honestly, for stage 5 it depends on who you are using to milk the bonus coins to the max. If you are a Keith player and want to maximize the amount of coins that appear, you HAVE to die before entering the stage...I do it during the Black Angel battle. You have to have your weapon up to Lvl.2 and no more than that. This is because Keith's Lvl.2 shot when in Ship mode is more powerful than when it is at MAX Lvl. (4), and his missiles are low powered at 2, so as to not destroy a crate that you just opened to start producing coins. 1 button press at Lvl.2 is the precise amount of shots to open up a crate, without destroying it. At MAX lvl. you simply cannot maximize your coin production to boost your score. You also must find the pattern to open the crates in, how many you can let them produce before you destroy that specific crate and move on to the next. Whatever you do though, DO NOT miss destroying a single crate, even if you messed up on the amount that it was supposed to produce, as you will not receive the Perfect Bonus at the end...when in doubt, USE THAT METER!!! Most of the time, you want to have 100%, or close to it, of your meter for the end stage bonus, but in stage 5, the trade-off for more coins and the perfect bonus is far more important than the amount of meter you will end up with, therfore, the trade-off is good. Usually, I end up with about 50% meter at the end of stage 5...which, when all things considered and the sheer amount of points I accumulated is worth it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plHTLGi5XC4 ---Watch from 10:53 to 12:12...maybe this will help a bit. I am on MASTER though...and in Saturn mode.

I've read that the collection of helper options doesn't increase rank, but I made multiple runs skipping quite a few of them and I
found myself no missing until the final stage several times. Definitely something I've never pulled off before.

Very good scores but you are also very far away from the world record in arcade mode, which leaves the description on Youtube as quite irritating.

it's a good score even without that label of "WR". Why not take it for what it is.

I will just repost my youtube comment here.
I think that score of 2.9 mil is suspicious to say the least since theoretical maximum points is 2.8mil
and bosses self destruct after a minute so you cant milk anything.
If a TASer can prove that even 2.85 mil is possible i will eat my hat.
Bonuses
-----------------------
Clear - 360,000
Stock - 190,000
Perfect - 240,000
Special - 400,000
-----------------------
total: - 1,190,000

Enemies
-----------------------
st1 ~56,000
st2 ~90,000
st3 ~85,000
st4 ~164,000
st5 ~ 48,000 + gems
st6 ~156,000
st7 ~202,000
st8 ~76,000
-----------------------
total: ~877,000

Idling
-----------------------
single game is around 25 min = 1500sec
1 sec = 60 points
1500*60 = 90,000 (idling all game)
500*60 = 30,000 (idling 1/3 of the game)
-----------------------
total: - 30,000

Lets add:
1,190,000+877,000+30000=2,097,000 points

STG Hall of Records 2,913,144 points
Theoretical max(no gems) 2,097,000 points

The difference is 816,144 so lets calculate how many gems that is:
816144 / 19 crates = 42954 points per crate
42954 / 10000 = 4 gems per crate

*first crate drops low value gems thus 19 crates
*each destroyed crate is worth 2.400 points

Unless there is video recording of someone dropping 12 gems on a single screen and getting perfect on stage 5,
this entry from the STG Hall of Records should be considered not valid.

Saying that something is impossible only because you don't know how it was done is the easy way out. You will probably not figure it out this way.

However, if you have figured out how to get 2.8m already you are not that far off. Look further and I'm sure you can reach the Japanese scores.

The WR player isn't the only person with the knowledge on how to achieve scores this high btw. There are dozens of other players around. In fact, the very first score submission for Hyper Duel in February of 1994 already started at 2.6m.

If you feel absolutely lost with this game, you can always try asking the WR holder. He's still around and can maybe help you out too.

Good luck!
