Some fixes, just realized this game does player sides, etc. God, please let there not be Raizing button differences.

Considering adding a field for the multiplier, like Mars Matrix. Would anyone be interested in that? It's not as "necessary" in GW as in MM, but it'd still be nice to have I think.

I might just make a new topic for Score Attack, if I ever do. That would let me split by character, and both threads would just plain look better. Only thing is, nobody really played Score Attack even when the game was popular. If anyone wants to submit Score Attack stuff here to build interest, I wouldn't mind, but I can't add a section for it just yet. If anyone wants to start a board for it themselves, I wouldn't really mind that either.

To be completely honest, I kinda wish arcade GW never existed and there was just the DC version. It's a great port, and it'd make my job way easier. Takumi's DC ports seem like strict upgrades over the arcade versions, similar to Gunspike.

Would also like to open a difficulty 8 section or topic in the future. If I do, I will probably make that a separate topic.

What's the difference between player sides?

No idea so far, I'm just trying to avoid anything resembling the Raiden situation. If it's annoying, I can remove it. Assuming everyone just used 1P side, I think I can safely assume that...

Enemies are slightly weaker when playing 2P side (or you're slightly more powerful). It definitely makes a difference when milking the "orbs" on the train stage (see 5:40 in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgPieC_Z1Uw).

I guess also it's possible to get better boss-times for stage 5 and 6 than on 1P side. I'm pretty sure it's the same for both Japan board and other versions. My score was 2P-side, and definitely Third_strike's too.

According to TANINI's Giga Wing guide, it's because some enemies are weaker on the 2P side. I don't know why this is a benefit, though. Here's the guide:

Fuck.

Acknowledged. Thanks for the guide.

Willing to bet it works exactly the same in the Dreamcast version.

Dreamcast - Jap. Version

Stuck in the Widerstand

bottino - 25兆4915億2731万5000 - ALL - 1P

An old score of mine.

I plan to revisit this great game in the near future in order to improve my paltry score, but I want to acquire more experience within the danmaku sub-genre first.

Probably will use a different ship as well, just to spice up things a little bit.

Battletoad - 71兆8633億0473万2680 - ALL - 2P - ShmupMAME v4.2

Nice little improvement over my 8 (?) year old score. I still love this game!

Video will be uploaded in the next days.

So here's the Isha replay:
https://youtu.be/i6QCNTKh0Qo

And a Ruby score for the fun of it:

Arcade version (JAP) - Ruby
Battletoad - 52兆0276億6840万9560 - ALL - 2P - ShmupMAME v4.2

I basically wanted to pick Ruby when replaying Giga Wing, but now I remember how much I disliked her stage order. Can't handle/milk the lava boss when it's stage 3. Still fun to play, her firepower is awesome.

Been forever since I played any shmups but took a stab at this one.

Arcade version
US board
Ruby in the Carmine
T-hawk - 32兆1214億2656万2430 - 7 - 1P - Mame 0.177

I figured I'd be happy if I could just full-combo the first 5 stages and not worry if I died on 6. Then put together that miracle run, with no deaths all through stage 5! Although used a ton of bombs on that stage and boss (only 1 left). I never even reached stage 6 on the first credit before, but somehow got all the way through it, with liberal use of bombs again, got through it with 0 lives and 0 bombs left. Stage 7 kicked my ass but I got to see the true ending. Multiplier came to 10.6 million, nothing spectacular by the standards around here but I'll take it.

10 million multiplier really isn't bad, you can build on that. My recent PB had "only" 20 million by the beginning of stage 7 and in most runs it was a bit lower.

Pulled off the full 1cc!

Image

Arcade version
US board
Ruby in the Carmine
T-hawk - 52兆3966億2271万3850 - All - 2P - ShmupMAME v4.2

I switched to the 2P side and ShmupMame after seeing the discussions here. ShmupMame did feel just a tick more responsive, and I think I noticed less bullets and rank around stages 4-5 though not sure.

Got through stage 5 using only one bomb on the stage and one on the boss. Then got through all of stage 6 without dying, liberally spending bombs the whole way. Did die twice on stage 7 but kept bombing at any sign of danger and got all the way through! There's actually very little score bonus for that (all the other boss breaks are multiplied by time remaining but stage 7 has no timer), only really for remaining bombs, my score went from 48兆 after stage 6 only to 52兆 after stage 7, but the payoff of the 1cc is the real prize. Multiplier came to 15.5 million; improvements from my last 10m run were on the train stage boss (got its big circular fireball attack a second time for 600k), the gunboat boss, the 100-value orbs at the 1up spot in stage 4 (didn't know how to do that before), and finally full-comboing stage 6.
