Arcade: 3 lives, 2 bombs, difficulty 4 for Japan version, difficulty 2 for other versions. All non-Japan arcade versions appear to be identical. Aside from the different difficulty settings, I theorize that the non-Japan arcade versions have slightly different coding (e.g. lower enemy health) like Progear.

Dreamcast: 3 lives, 2 bombs, difficulty 4. The Dreamcast version appears to be the Japanese arcade version but with far less slowdown. Likely, it also has small scoring changes all over the place, but definitely not to the degree of Mars Matrix. There do not appear to be any regional differences in gameplay.

To unlock the Stranger in the Dreamcast version, 1CC the game with any ship on any difficulty. You can also use the "unlock everything" code: go into the Gallery menu and press B, X, Y, B, B, Y, X, B.

Player 2 side reduces health of all enemies slightly and immediately reduces rank on death, at least in the arcade version.

Significant improvement. Rammed the boss without knowing what I was supposed to be doing, derp. This could be a pretty easy 1cc.

Stage 5 is such a bombfest, too focused surviving to nab all those medals! Damn it, entered the TLB fight with an extra life + 2 bombs, managed to get down to just the black ship when that spammy blue radial attack where he jumps everywhere got me. Pretty happy though, I think I can get this 1cc if I bomb a bit less on Stage 5 and avoid that silly death near the end of Stage 6.

Funny, I tried the game once before in an arcade and thought the reflect gimmicky. Now that I know where the hitbox is and can weave through the patterns I love the game.

For the record, I used the Japanese CPS2 version.

Oh my god, I had a 5.5 mil multiplier by stage 4's boss, nomissed stage 5 with 5 bombs in reserve and what do I do? RAM THE STAGE 6 BOSS. ;_; Shame, too, because I only used one bomb in stage 6, and then the medallion ate me in a hurry with its speed bullets.

Edit: Got my 1cc finally! And my first one in MAME too! Except I had a terrible run of stage 5 and basically bombed everywhere so I got less than my hiscore. Fuck.

Image

Fuuuuuuck. I can get a 6 mil multiplier by the stage 3 boss now (thanks mostly to milking the hell out of the stage 1 and 2 bosses as I saw in some superplays), but I keep screwing up and dying in stage 5. I feel dirty getting a 1cc score that's so low when I know I can do better.

Edit: Up to getting a 7 mil multiplier by the time the stage 3 boss appears! If only I can manage a clear with these kind of multipliers.

FUCK YEAH

Image

I am seriously happy with this score, practised my ASS off to get it. Had 9mil multiplier at the start of stage 5, 10 mil mult by the start of stage 5 boss, 12 mil mult at stage6 end, went straight for the kill on TLB (started at 2L0B, ended with 0L0B, I suck at the TLB when it fires speedy shots :( ).

Definite room for improvement though; I bombed the stage 4 boss once and I only had 2 bombs by the time I made it to the stage 5 boss. Still not good at playing stage 4 and 5 for score, either, but I'm very happy with the score all the same. Rank doesn't seem to be too much of an issue, it's more silly mistakes getting in the way when you're being greedy for medals...

A little improvement. Nearly reached that sub-boss ship that annoys you once in a while. Missed the extra live in stage 4 due to a stupid mistake (got tangled in the left side of the screen trying to avoid the bullets from the big tank). Oh, what could have been with that extra life...

Definitely improving atleast. Awesome game, i´m enjoying it inmensely.

It´s been downhill since i last reported a score. Unable to make any advancement, learned stage 4 but then was totally unable to make a decent run, always stupid deaths at the first three stages. Was getting quite infuriated.

Then this run happened. No miss no bomb till stage 5, then it went south as nerves got the hold on me. Not knowing how to navigate the stage didn´t help at all, i have to practice this stage pronto. In one particular moment my brain just had a meltdown, was unable to make any sense of the mass of medals and bullets and ended "collecting" (ramming) a cluster of bullets as if they were medals

My run eneded little after the stranger encounter. But man it was about time to better my score.

Woot, first time i reach stage 6. No missed till stage 4, where i managed to lose two lives in the most stupid fashion. Luckily it allowed me to get the extra live in that stage. Stage 5 was quite hectic, managed to get caught off-guard in lots of bad places and had to bomb much more than i would have liked. Reached boss without lives, and without bombs. Boy was i nervous...had some lucky dodges, but managed to blast that sucker down :D

I had wanted to see wich score i could get if i passed stage 5, and at last i managed it. Now if i could get more consisted and avoid the gazillions of stupid deaths...

ShmupMAME v 4.2 - Japanese Version
BKR - 49872279606390 - ALL - Stuck

As usual, nomissed to the TLB (then died twice -_-), a few more panic bombs than usual in Stage 5, ended with a better score mostly because I knew about the score trick at the spotlight in stage 2. Still, happy with the improvement.

Run's now on Youtube.

Well, I did the unthinkable. Will probably split by character eventually.

All unmarked scores will be assumed to have been made using the USA version.

The game difficulty is pretty much the same on the defaults in both the Japanese or USA versions... if you can beat one you can beat the other, so it's not like scores are totally incomparable. Really, it's like Progear, I have a hard time noticing a major difference between the two. Makes sense to separate 'em.

Splitting scores by character is more important in my opinion though - they play totally differently, have different level orders, and it'd give players a reason to use the weaker guys (Sinnosuke you suck man).

Well, that's the nature of the 8 scale difficulty, really. Sometimes you never notice it, maybe it's never even programmed in, etc. The thing is that Progear has changes that go beyond the simple switch, such as enemies taking less damage. I'm guessing Giga Wing may just have the same.

edit: Now split by characters.

I guess I should put this here. Old score that I didn't post since I thought I'd play the game more but got distracted by something else:

Erppo - 109兆7676億0411万7240 - Ruby - ALL - Shmupmame 4.2

Dumple - 18兆6652億2505万8450 - ALL - MAME 0.153 (gigawing)

First 1CC turned out to be a 1LC - having the extra bombs for the last 2 levels helped.

No change in rank but a minor improvement. I was in the mood for Giga Wing and was messing around with it, and got a slight bump in score. Really disappointed actually, was a no miss up to the black ship and had two bombs in stock. I actually panicked and threw them both one after another, then died once before managing to clear. Would be nice to be able to no-miss the game but not quite yet I'm afraid. :/

Would there be any interest in having tables for the DC version's Score attack mode?

It's a bit different than just having a separate score table for each level. There is a second multiplier that keeps climbing and resets when you bomb or lose a life. Your medal counter gets reset if you lose a life but not if you bomb just like the arcade mode - so it's still worth bombing instead of losing a life (you have infinite lives).

It's also made interesting because you start each level with no powerups and the level's difficulty seems to be start at a rank similar to at least level 3 or 4 of the arcade mode - so it's an interesting challenge to try and no miss each level separately. If you can do that you would be able to cane the arcade mode so it's a good way to practice.

I've managed to no-miss no-bomb level 1 with a score of 43 trillion for example

I wanted to, and the old thread had tables for it, but the thread already looks terrible as is. If an army of people request it, I'll see what I can do.

ShmupMAME v4.2 (Japan) - Ruby/Carmine
Square_Air - 26067074174420 - ALL

Now I guess it's time to finally get back to Mars Matrix.
