It's a bonus enemy. You need to quickly kill all those guys really fast to get it to appear. That's why I used the overdrive there and slashed them all up really quick.

The extra guy is worth 20,000 points, so it's ideal to save the overdrive for him, but I get really sick of messing up on the guys before him and missing out, or getting hit because I'm in a hurry.

How exactly does the game penalize score for taking a hit in terms of experience and stuff?

It didn't even look like you lost anything for it since armor left doesn't factor into clear bonus.

But, as if I didn't already hate this game's scoring system already.

I think it affects rank when you get hit in a level. I could be wrong on that. And juding from his 70k comment...0-hit 100k - 1-hit 50k - 2-hit 30k...70k lost.

Of course not getting hit and beating a level won't get you an s-rank. That i don't like. it seems to be weapon paths used for each level.

MrM - are you still first? Also, what is the 10th place score? I'd check myself but, again, my shit freezes everytime i access the boards.

I was still first when I checked this morning (for once). I think 10th is around 14.8 million or so.

Getting hit once will limit your rank to an A no matter what. That's a loss of 50,000 points. To guarantee an S rank you need to pick up at least 4 weapons in a level, no miss, and destroy a specific amount of enemies for each level.

If you get hit twice but pick up a lot of weapons and destroy a lot of enemies you can still get a B (30,000 points), otherwise you'll end up with a C (10,000 points). Same with only picking up 3 weapons limits you to an A.

Picking up weapons also gives you a tiny amount of experience for that weapon as well as a boost to your overdrive meter.

One thing I wish they changed is the final bonus for getting weapons to 1 dan. 200-300 thousand points should have been enough.

It seems the freezing leaderboards have something to do with your save file. They work on a fresh save file but after some time they freeze.
So if you want to check the leaderboards you can log in with another gamertag and start the game with a fresh save file.

I did try removing my save file but I still get the freezing. It must be something in the cache at this point, as I have removed the game and save files. I tried putting the game on a USB and loading it up that way, but no dice. Oh well.

Hard
MrMonkeyMan - 15,399,110 - ALL(9mil) - P1

Wasted my overdose on the stage 6 boss because I wanted to see if you could save it for the final boss. You can't.

I love that I can play this full screen now. The last attack on the stage 6 boss is a little scary though, now that you can't see the bullets coming from the side.

Bring on the side vower scores :p The TLB is pretty tough, I'd imagine it taking a while until people get Hard mode clears.

edit:

Side Vower - Normal

Zaarock - 3,608,060 - Stage 6 - P1

Also nvm what I said about hard mode, I noticed you can do stage 7 in practice mode even if you haven't beat it now. That last attack is pretty cheap still :d

1cc'd side vower normal already

Side Vower - Normal

Zaarock - 11,110,050 - ALL(6mil) - P1

No-missed the stage 6 boss on my first time getting to it in a real run. Only 6 weapons at 1dan and I missed the multiplier on a bunch of bosses, so crappy score. Had 4 lives in stock at the end though. Laser went 3dan, rocket 2dan cause I went all out in taking the strongest weapons for st6 boss, heh.

I think I already like this more than the main game, but my weapon route is pretty bad atm, will have to see how a proper route plays out. Fighting stage 1 and 2 bosses might be a pain in the ass without side :?

Thanks. It didn't feel that hard because I was already used to every weapons benefits and the weapon switching mechanics. And most of the challenge is in the bosses, which can be made much easier with the right weapons.

Side Vower - Normal

Zaarock - 13,513,850 - ALL(8mil) - P1

So close to 9mil end bonus.. I underestimated how long it takes to level up the bomb so I ended up not using the sword on st5 boss. Otherwise was a pretty fun run, I got to stage 5 with one life and managed to no-miss everything after that :)

BTW, is it just me or is the stage 5 song taken from somewhere? I get a big sense of deja vu when listening to it (and it's super catchy)

So are weapons levels preserved if you ditch the weapon and then reacquire it or do you have to work your way back up again?

laser 3dan, rocket 2dan I think. Lost first place on the leaderboard in the middle of this run though :( Someone got a little over 15mil.

Hardest part of the game for me is Stage 4 boss. I altered my route a bit so I fight it with direction, works pretty well. Takes care of those really annoying popcorns coming from below in the stage too.

Any chance of a video from you?

I only had the time to play this a couple times yet but it feels the Vower side has much more 'randomness' in it's gameplay.

Nah, I don't have a capture card or anything.. if the game had a replay feature I could borrow a video camera or something but even then, I probably won't be playing this for score as seriously as MMM.
We can always play co-op though! I wonder how it would work if the other player kills himself. Could also try going for co-op 1cc's, which is fun.

Sure, there is more stuff flying around :p
The boss attacks are often randomized, as are the enemy mechs in stage 4 (which might end up being annoying)

Side Vower - Hard

Zaarock - 13,050,100 - ALL(7mil) - P1

Made an easy to play route ignoring bomb and vulcan. Turned out to be pretty easy! I think I'll try and have direction for stage 5 on expert to make me save even more lives.

Hard/expert seems to have more differences here than in the main game too, love it. Stage 5 boss spawns even more cubes for milking in expert.

I'm dropping points all over the place. The stage 3 boss is going to be a pain in the ass to get a high multiplier on all 3 robots at once.

MMM, what are you looking at as a theoretical score maximum for Side Vower?
