Something does not compute here. :P

But really, great scores you're putting up. I need to get back on Miyamoto when I have the chance, and maybe Golden Bat since I've gotten up to stage 7 with that and want a clear with a Garegga plane.

Haha, thanks! :)
It's just that i know i can perform so much better. My Grasshopper, Shatter Star, Baron and Miyamoto scores are pretty easily improvable.

Looking forward to seeing you post something new on here!

An H should be possible if i can make it to stage 7 with a D,5...

This is a damn nice score for Baron! And congrats on the clear also, it's not an easy one.

How would you rank the difficulty of the clears by character with let's say an A+ score at least? I'm asking because I'm having real trouble with fighting BHMKII with a non-piercing shot that has a bad bomb (e.g. with Baron).

Thanks man!
What's weird with Baron is that scoring is really hard for the first six stages and easy (survival wise too) on the last.
Both Mad Balls are fucking annoying since it requires some heavy RNG luck for scoring.

Hmm A+ survival clear...
Probably in this order.

Bornnam
Miyamoto/Wild Snail
Gain
Silver Sword
Grasshopper
Chitta
Flying Baron

Baron is pretty hard to score with in the first stages and you have to be really confident in your BH2.
The run I posted only had 1 miss on BH2 with a scoring bomb that followed. You have to make sure you damage him during the Vulcan spray on the third phase with all of the non-piercing ships as that is one of the few times when you can actually deal some decent damage what with all of the grenades and destructible bullets.
Rank is usually pretty Damn low though so finishing him and glow squid off shouldn't be a problem. Cleared with two extra lives, lost one from milking medals on the last form.

E,765,790 - ERM - Stage 7 (BH2) - Gain (ABC)

Started learning some Gain. This run would have been close to a G with a clear. Only had an A,9 going into stage 6.
Got terrible RNG at BH2. Clusterfuck pattern on all of the second form.

Haha, thanks! :)

I was kind of torn about if i should've submitted this or not. But i figured it might be fun seeing some progress since this is without a doubt the one ship with the highest potential.
Restarting at the birds is frustrating but i've kind of got it down now and usually get between 2,8-3 mil about 50-75% of the time.
I've been practicing for some 2-3 days now and what's been hardest so far is the strategies used for stage 5 (plays differently than any other ship) and i think BH2 is gonna be a real bitch. Only gone up against him two times so far but unless you've got a lot of extra lives the clusterfuck pattern will screw you over hard.
Would be an entirely different case if he was able to have more than one option shot on screen at the same time. At least when rank is not Bornnam low.

Gonna give this my all whenever i can. I'm starting to get consistent with all of my routes now and so long as i can end stage 5 with a C i should have a good margin to reach the H.

C,287,640 - CloudyMusic - 7 - Gain (C)
(previous score is as "C.M", B.75)

Image

As trite as it is to say after a PB increase, I wasn't at all satisfied with this because this run fell far short of its potential. On that note, here's another run that happened shortly after, probably the most heartbreaking end to a run I've ever experienced in a shmup. I had a full five-bomb stock at this point.

Hopefully I'll be back with something better soon. :)

C,923,950 - CloudyMusic - Stage 7 - Gain (C)

Image

This was a pretty good run for the first five stages, barring a few things. Rank was generally very low. Failed to get homing in stage 6, but kept my medals intact for a while past that. Junky Monkey went pretty well. BH2 definitely could have gone better, but at least I beat him...then I game-overed to the popcorn rush before Glow Squid, as I always feared I would someday.

I'll say that Eaglet's suggestion to start at 10Hz definitely made a difference. No real discernible rank impact due to the screen limit on Gain's options.

Replay here.

I feel almost silly posting this score in a page filled with otherwise amazing runs but it's my personal best and I'm pretty proud of this run, even though I completely destroyed it after the wall. The 1cc is still so far away but I'm confident I'll be able to get it.

EDIT: well I thought beating my pb would be difficult but the next run was quite something:

Late to the party here (sorry) but great work micro!
Are you going for the letter score or just the clear?
Getting to stage 7 those first times is such a huge rush with 6 being the wall that it is.
Let us know if there are any specific parts you're having trouble with and we'll (at least I'll) try to break them down as well as i can. :)

Thanks to both of you! For now my main goal is getting a clear, but I'm continuously trying to improve and solidify my scoring where I can. Right now I'd love to enter the sixth stage with 6+ million every time and thus I'm refining my execution against Mad Ball, but I should also really start scoring against Satanic Surfer instead of speed killing it. After the clear I'd love to get a letter score, maybe with Gain which is one of the coolest ships ever in any STG I've ever played.
Right now I haven't the slightest idea about how to tackle the stage 6 boss (which shouldn't be too hard I think? I just never spent time practising it) and of course Black Heart mark 2 is a huge, scary wall... But to be honest my biggest problem is getting 100% consistent at stage 2, 80% of my restarts are because I fail to keep the medal chain at the beginning with the blimp or when the big tank comes down amidst the stream of planes... It's ridiculous because I have a route I believe is good enough, and I know I can execute it, I'm just not skilled enough to do it every time without staying 100% focused. Playing almost exclusively in the evenings after a long day at university makes this way harder than it should be ahaha

Sounds like some good and realistic goals you have set for yourself! I think by the time you're making it consistently to stage 7 you'll be able to easily score a letter with the Bat though.

Some tips on Mad Ball (already mentioned in the thread, but distilled to a point);
Always wait 5 cycles unless you're very confident in all aspects of the boss (possible to utilize fragment invincibility earlier to kill the outer ring before the fifth cycle).
Ideally you want the boss to move as far down on the screen as possible but for safety's sake; suicide as soon as you see the boss moving downwards when you've waited five cycles. preferably as early in the attack as possible.
Wait to deploy the bomb until when you're hovering over the boss.
If you've timed it correctly you should be able to bomb a second time (for the inner rings) as soon as you've respawned from the suicide and reach at least 3 mil for the third and final suicide.

Junky Monkey is pretty tough but the first two forms should be easy if you've managed to keep homing formation throughout the stage.
Otherwise; on his first static form focus on destroying all of the left side turrets asap and then stick to the mid-right side of the screen while firing at the core and and dodging his bullets.
This way most of the turrets on the right side will be off screen.
For the second static form; kill the two turrets on the left as soon as the form activates and immediately move to the right to kill the other two.
You should be able to macro dodge his big spread with the missiles if your timing and positioning is correct but be prepared for some micro dodging through the spreads. Don't be afraid to bomb if things get out of hand.
Watch out for audio cues for the fast spread. Safe areas are in the middle and a quarter of the way to the side of the screen on either side.
For the final form; first destroy all of his turrets ASAP so he'll pull out both of his arms.
During this form, when you're focusing on milk destroying the arms and turrets he deploys, try to keep yourself about 30% up from the bottom of the screen and about 20 degrees to either side of the core as bullet density seems to be the lowest here in general.

For medals on stage 2; always be mindful of the item drop order. If you know the you've got a medal coming up when you're reaching the blimp you might want to focus on just destroying one medal carrying side of the blimp and killing it ASAP for safety's sake.
Try to kill the big tank ASAP (utilize a small bomb) and again, keep watch on the item drop order as WS ships are slow and you'll need to plan ahead for where the medals will drop in order to reach them.
Either trigger wide formation and stick in the middle to kill all planes and easily grab medals or utilize the option formation button to pick them all off.

I know what you're saying about fatigue.
A cup of something (tea/coffee) helps me keep focus in the beginning at least.
