Released by Toaplan a year before the seminal Batsugun defined manic shooters, Dogyuun is a proto-Cave effort which also shares similarities with Raizing's Mahou Daisakusen and Armed Police Batrider. No sound emulation is available on mame, so buy the PCB or listen to some beats while you play.

Strategy basics can be found here and more detailed info can be found reading through some of the posts from the high scorers in this thread. Replay of the previous top score by Ruldra is on youtube here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please post in format: score - name - Stage (loop reached)-(stage reached).

Quote:
01. 12,277,930 - Dragoforce - Stage 3-2
02. 3,320,580 - Ruldra - Stage 2-1
03. 2,493,500 - Gwürz! - Stage 1-9
04. 1,736,430 - CHI - Stage 1-6

14. 0,491,800 - mr_m0nks - Stage 1-3
15. 0,342,190 - roadrunner - Stage 1-3

All scores welcome no matter how good or bad.

Please use defaults, only 1 credit and the Japanese region setting - this can be done by pressing tab while playing Dogyuun in mame and then selecting the dip switch menu.

I will give it another shot on monday.

Did not blow my socks off at all when I played it some months ago for the first time, but we will see. The lack of a spreadshot is just frustrating yet the graphics/sound are well done.
Nice to have, but it doesn't reach usual Toaplan quality regarding gameplay :/

It's Awesome!!! Probably my favourite Toaplan game - the bosses are excellent, deaths are easily recovered from, and the (Joker Jun?) graphics are quality. The lack of a spread shot is slightly odd and enemies do like to swarm kamikaze the side of your ship, but if you combine the blue laser with the blue speed-up thing (which also gives 2 side lasers) you get decent protection.

Just to get started:
902,020 - Ruldra - Stage 1-4

I looked around the net for a bit and found the soundtrack in MP3 format. Get it here.

The ingame score board has a stage display which is quite odd, if anyone can shed light on this it would be much appreciated.

From what I've seen, the first number is the stage you reached, and the second one is how far you got in that stage. A 5-1 means you died right at the start of stage 5, while a 5-9 means you died at the boss.

And yeah, this game is pure awesomeness :D

Nice one Ruldra, much appreciated :D

1,604,210 - freddiebamboo - Stage 1-6

Scoring better on the speed stage and I'm catching most 5K power ups now, but the stage 6 boss is murder without a speed-up. This pretty much means if I die anytime in the second half of the stage I'll be in for a sharp exit as the only speed-up on stage 6 seems to be at the checkpoint just before the mid boss.

Well, guess what: capturing an enemy and keeping it gives you 10 points every 0.2 seconds. Not sure if it's worth the trouble though, as it takes a long time to reach 5000 points and you could just pick up one of those powerups for the same bonus.

I was wondering what the benefits were, good detective skills.

Have you seen Gemant's post in the strategy thread where he lists the WR as 60 mil 4-ALL? I'm sure we must be missing something here, as even going through the entire 4 loops with a capture, which sounds unbearable minus a speed-up or even the crap bomb, will not give you that jump in score (it would also mean missing out on the speed-up 5K pick up which happens once or perhaps twice a stage).

Maybe there is a bonus for clearing the loop?

I noticed that the bonus you get from capturing enemies on the 2nd loop increases a lot; it must increase even more on the following loops. If one could play the whole game with a capture, the bonus would be insanely big. Maybe enough to reach 60mil.

It's not too hard to test it out. Just turn on invulnerability on the dipswitches and do that.

Okay, just played all 4 loops. Random observations:

- The higher the loop, the more points you get from enemies. The 4th loop is absolutely crazy in that regard, they give you way too much points. I started the loop with 28 millions and cleared it with 71 millions

- On the 3rd loop and onwards, the golden statues won't appear on that high speed stage anymore. Weapon pods appear instead.

- The stage 5 boss doesn't time out. If somehow you can handle his attacks, then you can milk him forever and break the game

Wow, distance seems to be the best way to score then in the game. How hard are the loops?

I noticed that the blocking platforms could be milked, but I had no idea the boss wouldn't time out. I can't imagine it would be worth it though, as it would take far too long to get a decent haul of points from him and its attacks are not easy enough to making lasting for an extended amount of time a pleasurable experience. The stage 6 boss on the other hand has a never ending stream of spam coming from both corridors which could be exploitable. Just surviving that boss normally is very hard though, I can't imagine staying alive for long enough to gain anything from it.

Seeing as the game scores so highly in the 4th loop, the only way to truly gain anything from milking would be to do it there I suppose. If the WR is slightly over 60 mil, that player definitely didn't do any milking and maybe didn't even go for a captured enemy instead of a speed-up.

---------------------------

I did a bit of practice last night and have a few tips:

-Switching to the orange laser (NOT the purple one, which appears to be the worst weapon in the game) for some levels is advisable. Stage 4 (first half) and the second half of stage 6 are made significantly easier this way. From what I've practiced in save states, some later levels are also easier using orange as well. You do need to switch back to blue however for bosses as orange does absolutely sod all damage to them. Oddly, most of stage 2 is easier with the green laser, but stage 2 is pretty easy anyway so whether you can be bothered with the switch is another matter.

-For the speed run stage 3, collecting any power up that isn't blue can seriously mess up your credit. Make sure you only pick up the blue power ups when they are flashing light blue as they will always have a fade to dark before they change to purple or flash again. Safety is the best way here and it is better to avoid a stack of power ups than dodge right through the middle of them collecting stars.

-If you are having trouble on the stage 4 boss, playing a patient avoidance game is the best way. 99% of deaths occur because he traps you at the bottom of the screen either with his claws, or the green 3 way shot catches you as you dodge to the side to get out of the way of his trap. Everytime you see him move slightly towards you just hit the speed up and move to the top corner of the screen until he comes back up. The 3 way shot also glows for a second before it comes out so you should never get trapped if you pay close attention to him.

I've uploaded a Mame plus! 0.125 input (touch over 1.6 mil) that uses most of the above tactics here:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YYAIJI2J

Finishes on 1-6, but some very avoidable deaths. I normally have 2 lives to lose at the stage 6 boss...

Ok, I took you up on this. ;) Put in a credit just now, thanks Ruldra for the music. I messed up a bunch with the bonus but hey this was the first time I touched the game all year. 8)

1,071,200 - Enhasa - Stage 1-4

I like this game but my favorite Toaplan would have to be V-V. And yeah, the way you use your laser to defend yourself from the sides reminds me vaguely of a vertical Metal Black.

BTW, one last thing I just have to mention. freddie, I just love your avatar. It's an album cover for one of the Special Herbs right? I'm a big MF Doom fan. :)

Yeah, I like Doom and I had one of his Special Herbs covers as an avatar several years ago and now I just kinda rotate through 3 of them every 6 months or so. I was actually listening to his new album while playing this over the weekend, not sure if I like it yet, but his stuff always takes me a while to warm to.

And cheers for putting up a score :)

Hey freddie, I watched your replay and noticed that bosses were dying much faster in your run than they usually do when I'm playing. Then I noticed you're playing Europe version.

Try playing Japan version and you'll see they last much longer there.

I've only every seen the dogyuun rom and the Korean clone. I've tried going into the dip switch settings, but I couldn't find a region change and the difficulty was set to normal. Is there a Japanese rom?

Ah, just remembered to go into the tab menu instead of the F2 menu and changed it there. I thought it played the same, but I only played a quick credit up to stage 3 as I'm off to work soon. I'll update the score board requesting people change the region to Japan and I'll bang out a score on the Jp version when I get back from work mate

Okay, played it for a few credits and it seems like this game is really ass-kicking in any meaning. First score over 1m:

1,019,100 - ave - Stage 1-3

I died on the boss with that boomerang things although I even had a pretty long fight with him.

Do you guys play with the two-player gimmick? I used to play like that but always died several times on the speed stage. Now I played with the single ship for the first time and immediately got the score above.

BTW: I'd love to reach the last stage. What happens there is just outstanding, Toaplan really deserves kudos for putting such brilliant ideas into a 1992 shooter.

Yep... happy to see this thread!
Dogyuun is my favorite Toaplan, besides Outzone & Truxton 2.
This pcb (jp) is fully resident in my cab!
Here's my best score (done few months ago):

2,270,010 - Gwürz! - Stage 1-8

ImageImage

Despite hundreds of credits I don't know scoring secrets, but:
-I mainly use blue laser w/ speed-up option.
-I switch with the orange laser for the 4th boss (and gives me the 1up/100,000pts bonus when dead). Safe spot: when you've destroyed the claws, go to the top corner of the screen and let the homing weapon do his job!
-I use the purple one for the 5th & 6th bosses.
-...and the bomb for the 7th!

And I've noticed some differences between Jp & Southeast Asia versions of pcb's:

I'd say it's a bit cheap because it's overpowered and needs 2 credits (so not for the scoreboard obviously) to play. It is one of the few shooters that is made with some thought of 2 people actually playing the game however. Good to see you've come round to the game though! Thanks for taking the time to put up a score mate.

Thats a good score there Gwurtz! - as far as western players go, to my knowledge only DEL and possibly incognoscente (judging by his strat postings, I assume he has looped this) have gotten better scores on this game, although a few other London Casino dinosaurs may have done it also

Thats a nice trick to exploit the lack of range on the stage 4 boss there Gwürz!.

How do you get the 1up so early though? I've only ever seen the extra life come after the stage 7 boss, but that is based from one save stated play that I played through the entire loop - I've not managed to beat the stage 6 boss on an actual run yet, but I've never received the extra life bonus on any of the first 5 bosses.

Also, I agree with purple for the 6th boss, I've been practicing that boss recently and purple does seem to have some advantages despite it being awful during stages. It clears the spam quite well and it hits the boss when you need to hide up in the top corner.

-----------------

Scoreboard updated, but from now on only the Japan region is allowed unless anyone can give a good reason not to do it - the JP version is certainly not easier, so we might as well use that.

Thanx freddiebamboo.

The 1up bonus appears when you kill the 4th boss with orange laser...it doesn't work with other weapons.

Thanks for the tips, they really make those bosses a lot easier.

1,745,010 - Ruldra - Stage 1-7

I'm doing some steady progress, in almost every run I get farther ahead. It won't be long until I clear the 1st loop.

By the way, the 8th boss is incredibly easy with the green weapon. It destroy those spinning things pretty fast, and you can use the speed-up to dodge the bullets from his hands (stay in one corner, rush to the other when he fires). Piece of cake =p

EDIT: Hello first place.

Why don't you just credit-feed through it to see everything? The end of Dogyuun is a really unique experience in gameplay, I think this has not been done in a shooter before and after. Not very tricky, but really effectful.

I had 1,1 something the other day, but I couldn't get myself motivated to go for more.

If you wish, I'll record an INP and post it here next time I play. Normally I make it to the 8th boss.

And since Gwurz is closing in, I'd better post my (slightly) improved score:
