644,940 - Ed Oscuro - 71% (Autofire ON/6)
Holeee shit, man. I wish I'd put recording on, because most of that was stuff I'd never seen before. I nearly wiped out around the 400K mark, but got two lives in rapid succession there. I ended up dying for good at the blue...circles, still don't know what they do, but now I know there's more rushing (homing!) enemies to watch out for there.
I have split feelings about this one now. I tried a few plays with autofire off (I have it set to a rate of 6, but that's still plenty fast to speedkill many things) and there's no comparison in the difficulty. Many things which were difficult before are just laughable with it on. It is a shame that the powerup attack is useless (but there's always Hellfire). There's no inbetween with this one - either you're abusing the fire rate and not getting the "FULL SHMUP" experience, or you're getting carpal tunnel syndrome and still getting your ass handed back.
On the plus side, there's some really cool things in here, like the tearing-away tiles and the gravity (wind?) boss - I didn't die once there, but that was pretty impressive, even given how easy it was to figure out what to do. On the other hand, I get caught up by some things which I shouldn't be - some big bosses go down without a fight, while random homing popcorn kills me. It is also pretty laughable how many enemies just waltz onscreen with no backup to be picked off in orderly fashion - even without autofire, every "pair" wave of enemies (all three of them), where popcorn comes onto the screen from both sides, was killed by simply parking in the dead middle of the screen with the max powerup level. On a related note, nice Centipede reference in there! The area percentage also suggests there's not much more until the loop, which is also a shame. Fastest Toaplan loop ever, if that's true; I swear the average Tatsujin-Ou level is half as long as my entire play time here. It's a nice change of pace from Tatsujin at least. Overall, I'm surprised by how little memorization was needed once I got past the typical Tatsujin stuff near the opening.

I wonder if anyone has cleared it just by tapping the button back in the day. If yes this guy must be one hell of a Takahashi Meijin double.
Yes we multilooped it for 4 or 5 hours one day in the arcade, on a 2 Player game. We ran the fire buttons like on Track n'Field and never suffered any carpel tunnel fortunately.
Does the game get harder for 2P?
