Game Boy Gradius/Nemesis AND Interstellar Assault

Post by spadgy »

This thread covers Nemesis (the first Game Boy Gradius) and its sequel, Gradius: Interstellar Assault, (sometimes called Nemesis 2).

Image Image

So, first table is for the classic GB Gradius, (not the GBA one), also called Nemesis/Ultra Nemesis. It might not be the most fashionable Gradius, but it’s really good fun, cheap to pick-up, easily available, and quick to get into, so come on – get involved!

And then next is it's the sequel, Gradius Interstellar Assault. This game was also called simply 'Gradius II' when it was included in the PAL Konami GB Collection Vol. 4 and the JPN Konami GB Collection Vol. 3.

NEMESIS: All defaults please. Difficulty set level to "1". (If you do 2, list your score separately – we could start a second table). Lives = 2. Auto-fire is okay.

GRADIUS: INTERSTELLAR ASSAULT: All Defaults. That basically means 'normal' difficulty. Autofire's fine.

Score format: Name - Stage (X-X) - score

Here's my pathetic first submitted score from the previous thread as an example:
Spadgy - 1-4 - 148,500

Please mention which game you're submitting for!

LAST UPDATE: Auguest 28th, 2014

And finally:

Here lives the predominant thread for the discussion of Nemesis, including some great info and bonus level tips by Galaxian...

• Also (thanks to Galaxian for the link) there's some great level maps for Nemesis available...

And here seems the place to be talking up Interstellar Assault...

Thanks to Cthulhu for the previous thread.

Well - I might be the first person to post in my own thread, but I just got to level five on the bus home...

Spadgy - Stage 5 - 167,500

Now I just have to wait patiently for myself to update the thread...

Ed Oscuro - Stage 5 - 135,400

Played on a beat-up old Game Boy Color with a squeaky d-pad and a fire button that doesn't always register presses...didn't remember where the secret stage (in stage 4) was so I didn't use that either.

My first play of the game since probably 2005...and I got further than before! I don't think I ever got to Stage 5 before, though I got very close in '05. This time I made it without dying, and then promptly lost all my lives.

Well, just upped my score again (on the toilet at work if you must know!). If I keep improving every day I'll stagger the updates a bit.

spadgy - Stage 5 - 187,200

Like Ed Oscuro, I cruised to stage five, quite away in this time, and then just lost all my lives in one spot. I can advise playing this on a GBA SP, so you can stretch out the screen size and enjoy some front/back light...

EDIT - OK, I got onto the second loop, so actually got a decent score...

spadgy - stage 9 - 330,110

Won't be beating that for a while yet, so I'll be leaving it to all of you!

Spadgy, you mentioned adding Interstellar Assault to this high-score thread. If you do, I have a high score-

Galaxius - Stage 33 - 875,400

6th loop, 3rd stage.

I went back and revisited Interstellar Assault, and found an infinite milk on the fourth boss. I hope it doesn't ruin the scoring competition.

I put it together with a couple of other IA vids and uploaded in my Gradius Youtube page-

Here's my shitty Nemesis score:

AWJ - Stage 9 - 293,800

Are there any other bonus warps besides the one in Stage 2? Castlevania Adventure had a hidden room in each stage...

Updated! That ain't shitty AWJ. I too ended things pretty close to where you did, pretty much down to excitement at finally scoring OK...

And what be these warps you talk about?

Like your maps that is awesome. Hmm... the milking trick? I'm sure as it's pretty slow and laborious maybe we can just say lets all be honest and not do it? I mean – we all play the game for fun, and it’s not the most fun point milking trick...

I’m going to trust you all! It’s not like I’m a Twin Galaxies ref, so no need for video submissions

And yes... I understand it’s likely once in a while people might whack that re-spawning enemy once or twice before realising they’re milking. Just all be good with it OK!

It's just that tricks like that are so rare in Gradius, since almost every boss will timeout.

Technicality! That gives you more of a reason to not milk, right?

Ed Oscuro - Stage 7 - 204,500

Didn't bother trying to find the secret level. First (and only) play of the day, hooray progress! First time I've beaten this thing's first loop, too.

Right - only actually spent a very short while on Insterstellar Assault - it's a lot more like a real Gradius than GB Nemesis, and a fair bit trickier. Definately one you need to learn a little more than it's predecessor. This score is pathetic, but it get's one more on the second table!

Spadgy - 56,400 - Stage 2

Stage two! What a pile of crap I am so far!

EDIT: Spadgy - 700,900 - Stage 3

Bloody hell - I've only just beat boss for the first time. This is a toughy!

Gradius
Ed Oscuro - Stage ? - 366,800

Did this one a few days ago on vacation, same cartridge and same squeaky GBC as before. Gotta pick up a GBA SP sometime for playing this on.

It's a good feeling when you get to the bone stage in the second loop with 8 (at least) lives left. It's not a good feeling when you lose them all there, however.

Gotta try this one again, I can do better.

By the by, that was my second play where I'd triggered all the secret stages. It's kinda sad that I miss those bosses all the time now, heh (although I don't miss the swarm).

Gradius (Nemesis)
Ed Oscuro - Stage 5, loop 3 - 576,800

It's aggravating to rack up 21 lives and then blow them all at the second checkpoint of the last level in the loop...if I had been able to keep my nerves together I'd probably still be playing, haha

Will have to keep playing this to see if I can crack a million.

Gradius: Intersteller Assault

Damocles - 151,700 - Loop 2, Level 1

Nemesis

Damocles - 380,400 - Loop 2, Level 5

Ok...I'll admit...I get bored after the first loop...

Gradius (Nemesis)
Ed Oscuro - Stage 5, loop 4 - 754,300

Got stuck on the first part of the final level this time. I screwed up on the second hidden level in that loop - crashed out after picking up just a few point bonuses.

If this game had no hidden levels it would be much harder (and my games would end much more quickly). As it is, recovery from death is pretty much the most important skill in the game.

I am going to hold off on adding any more scores until I clear the fourth loop, which should bring the 1mil mark into reach.

New number one!

My score is without a single visit to a secret level. Maybe I need to come back to Nemesis with those secret levels...

It might be worthwhile to have a scoreboard set up without secret level visits. It'd make things much harder. I know I'd give it a shot.

I haven't seen the bosses for stages 2 and 4 for a while, and the stage 4 boss in particular has that painful enemy rush section before the boss proper.

Nemesis (1)
347,900 - Stage 9 (2-4)

My first clear in this game as well, just played it a couple of times. Due to the many extra items and few bullets I think it's not such an achievement though, but a VERY nice game! I really dig the graphics & perfectly translated sound.
