1943 - 2,053,510 - Stage 12 - MAME

I got 1 astronaut on this run - are they entirely random or is there a way to trigger them?? Need to practice the latter stages in this game and aim for clear. :)

1943 The battle of Midway is quite difficult for me, the last stage I can not overcome it, I hope someday get 1cc in this great game.

Just noticed that no 'weapon select' scores are allowed for 43 - is it really that contentious? Scores on MARP certainly use it, and the inputs are even printed on the instruction sheet in the cab at HEY.

Killed by a wave of planes that appeared after I destroyed the carrier and automatically did a loop which landed me right into them, bye-bye bonus.
Also, one player mentioned on MARP scoreboard that bullets are faster in Euro version, which seems to be true, you can really notice it in stage 7, I think certain planes also move faster.

That was a really good run(sadly no cosmonauts though), until i missed the fuel tank from red planes and then shot POW out of the screen in naval stage.

Had someone told me a while ago I'd actually sit down with those two games and clear them, I wouldn't have believed it. Imagine my enjoyment to find out I actually got rather decent scores on top of that, apparently. Ha!

Possibly the most brutally accurate depiction of war in a shmup. Within mere moments of turning on the game I lose the will to carry on and begin to long for a time when I wasn't playing 1942. Fascinating.

Unfortunately, there isn't any sound (I'll have to research why OBS wasn't able to capture the sounds).

I had started playing this game in early January 2022 and put in about 1245 minutes (about 20 hours and 45 minutes) in the game, finally achieving a 1CC.

I was playing on an Xbox 360 controller. My preference for this game would have been to use a joystick (this would have allowed me to increased my fire rate while reducing the fatigue on my fingers), but my joystick (SF4 TE stick) seems to tilt a certain direction without properly returning back to neutral. I'll have to fix that, some day.

In my previous runs, I was trying to prioritize points slightly over survival, but after not being able to achieve a 1CC, I decided to prioritize survival over speed. It is one of the reasons why there were planes and items that I potentially could have got to, but didn't, due to playing it safe(r).

There were some silly deaths on this run, but overall, I am relatively satisfied. I know I can do better in terms of scoring, but barring some contest or event for this game, I don't have any plans or incentive on picking this game up again.

For those wondering, around the 2nd point farming stage (25th to the last level) as well as after finishing the game, I was checking the Bookkeeping information to determine how many attempts I had made on the game (105) and how much time I had been currently playing for.

My 1942 score:
PEG - 11,771,960 - ALL - Autofire on - ShmupMame 4.2 (ROM=Rev B)

https://youtu.be/m7ZYcMI67cI

Game is a real slog to finish, especially brutal that it stops handling out extends at some point, at least it did in this run...no idea why that is or if that's normal.

SPM - 1,145,480 - 23 - MAME (Rev B)

I like this game quite a bit in short bursts, and every now and then play it for just 1 "loop" starting from the 1st/8th/16th/24th stage until I beat the next boss (or 2 bosses). But anything longer than half an hour feels too long and repetitive for what it offers. Too bad some interesting enemies only appear in later stages and most people won't see them (that's why I created 4 save states for casual runs).

But today I felt like giving the game a try on one credit from the beginning and this was the result. I feel like I could get the 1CC with a bit more practice but this run was already too long... I'm fine with my casual runs

Got the clear!! And apparently a new record on the board! Just by a handful of points but still...

I used 6Hz and 20Hz but also tapped/mashed a lot during the run. I think it's dangerous to shoot at a fixed rate in this game.
