Fantasy Zone (plus: No Shop Challenge)

Post by Andi »

Scores are from the arcade version (Saturn Sega Ages version would be fine too). I might start tables for other versions if someone shows some interest. Format is NAME - SCORE - LEVEL. Autofire scores are now kept seperately.

If you are feeling like a particular bad ass, go ahead and try the No Shop Challenge. As the name implies, you may not purchase any items from the shop. There will be a seperate table kept for this. Format is NAME - SCORE - LEVEL.

Fantasy Zone Arcade:
1) Kaiser - 8,480,600 - 3-3
2) Andi - 137,900 - 6
3)
With Autofire:
1) incognoscente - 12,880,700 - 3-2
2) saucykobold - 11,516,660 - 3-3
3) zinger - 5,361,200 - 2-2
4) GaijinPunch - 3,533,780 - 2-1
5) RFP - 1,720,280 - 2-2
6) Andi - 1,339,700 - 2-3
7)

Fantasy Zone No Shop Challenge:
1) incognoscente - 146,820 - 5
2) Skyline - 124,450 - 4
3) Andi - 117,240 - 5
4) Skyline - 89,740 - 3
5) Bloodreign - 81,300 - 3
6) Kagami HiME - 74,980 - 3
7) Ed Obscuro - 69,480 - 3
8)
With Autofire:
1) saucykobold - 255,720 - 8
2) incognoscente - 163,080 - 6
3) Kagami HiME - 129,980 - 5
4) RFP - 109,980 - 4
5)

PCE:
1)

PCE No Shop Challenge:
1)
With Autofire:
1) incognoscente - 399,900 - 8
2) Sonic R - 196,100 - 7
3)

Bumping topic with a new update. Hopefully I'll outdo my current mediocre scores soon.

RFP - 214 440 - R.8 - MAME (AUTO)

Maybe it takes the fun/challenge out of things but once I saw the replays from the Sega Saturn version, it's obvious that auto-fire was afoot.

The enemies eventually flood areas if a stage is taken too long to beat.

Bloodreign - 39,460 (MAME) Area 2 NO SHOP

Updated! Thanks for the heads up Bloodreign!

I didn't use autofire on my high score (it can be turned off in the options), but since there are only two scores right now, I'm not going to split the tables into autofire on and off.

Bloodreign: Yes. At first I thought that maybe just chilling in level one and killing the enemies over and over might be a way to break the no shop challenge and get really cheap high scores, unfortunately, you get overrun really fast. It's tough.

No shop use.

Tabas (stage 2) 35,060 (this play anyway, had a few quick deaths at the end and was too frustrated to go on). Played Set 2 in MAME.

God, I hate floaty games. Worst thing about Defender, too.

Shit Ed, I'm at my parents house this week, but when I get home and in front of my Saturn...oh shit, your score is going down.

Maybe. If I'm lucky.

No Shop

Andi - 117,240 - 5 - no autofire

Hopefully that will keep me on top for a while. Round 5 is a nightmare with no shop. The spawners takes so long to kill, meanwhile the screen is practically filled with bullets.

I also updated my regular mode score very slightly.

No Shop Stage 2 - 49,500

An improvement for sure, but those enemies, graaah.

Edit: 81,300 stage 3 NO SHOP

My arms are now officially worn out.

Skyline - 89,740 - Round 3 - No Shop

Need to spread out my shots a little more on Round 3's Boss, as opposed to concentrating on destroying one beam cannon at a time.

I destroy them one or two cannons at a time and seem to have good luck. I start at the top using the drop bombs to kill all the way down to the last two cannons, then I take little potshots at those until they're destroyed. It works pretty well. If you're having lots of trouble, you might try it.

Change your strategy on him, destroy the lower ones at least to the center cannon, then just bomb rest of cannons from top

Thanks for the input. Ended up using pretty much only the bombs on the Round 3 Boss this time around.

incognoscente - 7,031,380 - 11 - autofire
MAME: Fantasy Zone (set 2, unprotected)

On the loop all extra lives, gold, and weapons are removed. You can keep your speedups at least :)

End of loop bonus is a hefty (gold * 10) + (lives * 1,000,000).

Nicely done.

Nice work man. Nice work. So, basically, when you clear the game, your score in like tenfold. That's dope.

If we get one more score with autofire, I'll start another board for it.

Score Up:
incognoscente - 12,880,700 - 18 - autofire
MAME: Fantasy Zone (set 2, unprotected)

1-life clear of first 2 loops, died on second stage of third loop. (Embarassing.)

No Shop:
incognoscente - 163,080 - 6 - autofire

A correction: lives and gold are converted into points at the end of a loop, but weapons remain.

Would scores be acceptable from Turbo Grafx 16 Fantasy Zone?

Maybe. How authentic to the arcade version is it? I'm not too big of a stickler, but there won't be much of a sense of competition if people are playing vastly differenty versions of the game. Any know the differences between the versions?

I found some you tube clips of arcade Fantasy Zone and it seems that the Turbo Grafx version is pretty spot on.

I have a score (no shop) to submit but I used rapid fire and it makes the games MUCH more manageable.

EDIT:
Anyways I'll post my score:

No Shop
Sonic R - 196,100 - 7 - autofire (TG-16)

I cannot defeat the stage 7 boss without speed ups :( He moves too fast when he is almost die.

Some of the differences I spotted:
  • PCE version's enemy and bullet speeds are overall slower than the arcade release.
  • PCE version starts the player with extra lives.
  • Opa Opa's base movement speed is increased.
  • Enemies are much less likely to shoot in the PCE version and stage difficulty takes longer to increase.
  • Popporz (Stage 5 boss) has different shooting behavior. [This seems to be a problem of all conversions, including the PS2 version.]
  • Coin system is a little off. I would need to spend more time to discern exactly how it is working.
  • IDA-2 (stage 7 boss) has fewer hitpoints and cannot jump as far.
  • Final boss's 5th pod behavior is modified.
PCE/TG-16 version is overall easier, especially in the no shop challenge. eg:

No Shop:
incognoscente - 399,900 - 8 - autofire
Fantasy Zone, TG-16 version via MagicEngine.

This was my first time playing this version. Died on the final attack of the final boss.

Sonic R: Know precisely when IDA-2 can take damage and when it can't. Keep shooting during the entire encounter, but lob bombs to hit the boss right when it can take damage. This will allow you to take it down a little faster and is practically required when looping the arcade version.

Thanks for tip :D
I'll have to give it another go.

I've never play the arcade Fantasy Zone and play the SMS version many years ago. The TG-16 is pretty much the only one I know  There is not much difference in challenge from no shop and shopping to me other than buying speed ups - only thing I buy anyway.
Maybe a different table or even a separate thread for TG-16/PCE?

I've now split up autofire and regular mode scores. I mean, it's cool if you don't have any balls and want to play with autofire - no one will judge you. But you'll now be banished to your own table.

Kidding. Keep the scores coming. Autofire or not.

No Shop, No Autofire:
incognoscente - 146,820 - 5
MAME: Fantasy Zone (set 2, unprotected)

I wish I could do a normal clear sans autofire, but I'm very out of practice with the joystick.
