Been using Reimu mostly.

What character is best for beginners and/or just trying to survive for as long as possible?

Try Yumemi. I could get to Stage 8 with her, though her higher speed is kinda annoying.

EDIT: I have lost matches to overshooting movements with her a bit too frequently in my limited time of trying her out, though if you have no problem with the movement speed or perhabs even benefit from it then try her.

Also, she has slower charge speed which can definitely be a problem but her charge shot is very powerful.

yumemi (the most bottom choice) is the strongest character. the crosses she uses wreck the AI and early deaths happen almost every time with enough boss summons

reimu is the 2nd strongest choice. the big ying yang balls screw with the AI for some reason, alas to a lesser extent than yumemi's crosses

a good deal of PoDD is knowing what you do, as opposed to mad dodging skill. knowledge in this game is very important

I don't think I know what I'm doing. Or why I can't get past stage 3 no matter what I do.

stage 1 (forgot who, probably Kana): around 700k
stage 2 (Mima): around 1500k
stage 3 (Kotohime): around 2100k
stage 4 (Elen iirc): around 3000k (was disappointed that I didn't get an extend at 3000k)
stage 5 (Rikako): last life, game over

the only extends you get in this game are at 10m and 20m. you don't get anything past that. that's 4 lives for 9 stages. this is stingier than most CAVE shooters w

Another game over. One day I will clear this and get a PB. But today is not that day. Today I will post another game over.

Yumemi is a bully.

I got this a day or two ago. Died in stage 5 to Ellen, IIRC. Posting since the emulator is being an asshole and I might not find time to improve it.

I seem to have the most success with Mima.

I still don't know half of what's going on.

Better read that gameplay article again on touhouwiki

the touhouwiki article is full of shit. I wouldn't take what it says at face value. if you have any question you feel need to be addressed, it would probably make more sense to ask more experienced players. zil, chum and I know a good deal about PoDD, and I'm pretty sure that we can cover the most important questions better than the wiki.

How do bosses appear over your opponent other than charging a boss spell? :?:

Gaining 51,200 spell points will cause you to summon a boss.

Probably the one you're most comfortable chaining with. I find it way easier to keep a chain with Reimu than with anyone else, because of her charge speed and the charge shot coverage. It is also good for destroying those fireballs, which seem to give a large amount of points, because every time I hit a bunch of them it's like a free boss attack.

It's not only at 51,200 SP that you gain a boss attack, though, is it? There are instances where the screen freezes for like five seconds with just boss attacks being sent back and forth.

Edit: or maybe Chum means every 51,200 SP, just occurred to me.

You can't summon more than one boss at once. What happens is that your opponent reflects your boss, and you reflect your opponent's boss back. You need more spellpoints to reflect a boss (I think it's twice as much), but after that, it's a free reflect, so once both you and you opponent reach roughly 100k, you just summon bosses back and forth until one of you loses out. Another thing is that if you have your boss out and reach 300k spellpoints, you use a panic attack, which is, as far as I understand, a free level 3. The way the game handles these panic attacks is very odd, since you seem to get them at random after the first 300k threshold. I sometimes get one at 400k, too. Sometimes not. I can't really explain why though.

I feel like the discussion thread might be more suitable for those kinda questions w

Again my hopes and dreams shattered by Yumemi.
Or rather, by a hideous nightmare! There should be a character that has Yumemi and Chiyuri as early bosses and some of the fun opponents as final bosses. The fuckers I have the least fun with are the ones that you have to survive the longest. :?

Guessing there was more slowdown back in the day? But it just would not be Lunatic then, would it?

tbh, I feel like there's enough slowdown already. Hate the brief pauses + screen flash when boss attacks are unleashed, half my deaths must come from when that happen.
I really came to like this stuff though, it's way more fast paced and tighter than it seems at first glance.
