I think they give you points though.

If you mean ANY Special Version, I haven't found a big difference. However, some games only have a Special Version for any Carivan modes, like Gunhed and Nexzr. Also, Soldier Blade Special has an "Easy Mode" for both 2min and 5min mode.

Not so sure it was a bug (or at least, not an emu bug). Check out the results from the 1998 Caravan compo. (The one that says Nintendo 64)

I'd love to know what's with the low hit count for the 5 minute mode if the chain system can be exploited like that, though... counterstop equivalent?

Edit - Yes, it's completely possible.

Final Soldier 2min
Ed Oscuro - 685,100

Final Soldier 5min
Ed Oscuro - 2,068,000

I had some aggravation earlier but got a 670K run with it.

Anyhow, my "new" strategy: Get everything I can early on (managed not to get hit the whole run, yay), and then just milk the boss. Killed him with one second left.

On my 670K run, I had 13 seconds on the clock after killing the two bosses, but the stuff I could get with that time left (I was one powerup away from full power, which doesn't really hurt at that point as the stuff that appears next all appears at the top of the screen) isn't very good. The two rows of enemies that appear immediately next bounce outwards on being hit, so I point-blanked the left group, then moved to the center, and then timed out.

The long wait after these boss fights kills me in both Final Soldier and Soldier Blade. I'd rather just milk the bosses, jeez...

Edit for 5min mode:

Heh, I had a run where I had 570K going into the two bosses...which would've made for a nice 2min run.

Anyhow, the three extra minutes felt much easier than the first two minutes. On this clear, I had 21 seconds remaining, and could've increased that lead further, ah well.

Final Soldier 2min
Ed Oscuro - 699,100

I went into the dual bosses with 570,200 points. I probably missed tons of points from the second boss because I was hanging back down the screen once I had triggered the milking (I didn't want to prematurely kill it).

Wow...almost broke 700K there.

By dual boss do you mean the two hoppers?

Which is "the second boss" in 2min mode?

Shoot him until he starts dropping bullets.

Cool, Star Soldier R scores.

I'll be out of town until Monday, away from the text file where I keep the scores, so the lists won't be updated until then. Bit of a shame, I was hoping to get to do some caravan attacking this weekend and reclaim at least few spots. Ah well.

I fucking love it! True to Star Soldiers formula, the faster you kill, the faster they appear to kill more, hell I've already juiced my score to over 2mil on 5min & 960k on 2min, and yet can still think of soooo many ways to improve:D If 2/5min is your thing, its the crack!

On an interesting side note, when powering up, you collect your shield and your spread shot seperately. Once you have shield bits (up to 5/6 cant remember), they sort of charge up like in SS on cube, then you can release them by pressing Y (classic controller) and they'll shoot enemies for a couple secs. What I just figured out though, is that when released, you can actually use the trigger buttons to direct them to attack the L/R side of the screen. Like I said, improvement, improvement, improvement...

The chaining system runs on a combo meter, fairly simple really. It can be a challenge in a couple parts to keep going though, namely when you have to kill an enemy a special way for a bonus - Overall though, just straightforward. To me, the strengths of the game lie in the progression algorithm potential. It's nice to be playing through 2 Min, and you can specifically & claerly note that enemies are showing up earlier than your last runthrough (or later sometimes, argh)

Yet another reason why I want a Wii. Anyways...

=Final Soldier: 2 Minute Attack=
LGB - 590.800
=Final Soldier: 5 Minute Attack=
LGB - 1.561.600

To say I improved a little.
