Re: STGT'12 Week 3: Salamander 2
Thanks a lot. Placing the Options inside the Golem really did the trick. You don't even need to bomb then.BareknuckleRoo wrote:http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... 18#p824218
Basically, get 2 fully powered options at the start of the level, then grab laser/ripple + missile and manuever them so they're inside the tail segment. Autofire away and if it gets near the middle of the screen, option bomb it to finish it quickly.
Oh, found a video of this.
And I am pretty certain the Golem only dies if a certain amount of damage is inflicted before a certain time. I definitely pumped more into him before with some 3-4 option bombs and he just did not die.
Of course killing the Golem has implications on my score:

Re: STGT'12 Week 3: Salamander 2
which versions of mame are you guys successfully,
*savestating this game
*playback of inp of this game
the first i've only tried once-> hang, might been one time occurence thou..
playback of inp -> Floating point exception... on 0.139 ,
0.14X doesn't simulate this game at full speed on my comp (unless it's an option that might fix that)
my first cred went to 170k-ish.. and now i'm stuck at trying to learn to tech the first ..

Finally looped this sucker. First death was at stage 5 boss, rank from the popcorn there is nasty if you've no-missed up to that point. Turned into a mess after the final boss, barely made it to Stage 2-2 and was flailing miserably to the point where I couldn't manage to grab any speedups or options. I even fucked up entering my initials. ;_;

Version 0.106 runs it at full speed for some reason.Yazphier wrote:0.14X doesn't simulate this game at full speed on my comp (unless it's an option that might fix that)

Got a couple more runs in before I sent my copy to a buddy to use for the week, since i'm out of town.
Finally got the mid-boss stage 1 bonus - 1 out of 30 That vid. makes it seem much easier than it is, at least from my experience.
culdad78 - 412,450 - 1-6 (boss) - SAT-J
That'll be my final :/ No doubt I could have done much more, but is what it is. Was finally becoming a more aggressive scorer w/my options on stages 2 and 3.

... this will probably be improved
savestates seems to work as normal, (must been an odd chance it didn't)..
but i still can't .inp playback at all in this game, which is kinda sad... .. well, it seems to work on newer version, but those ain't at full speed.. :/
noticed that it seems that the "recording" stops to early (like instantly)...

and so do .139 for me, i was more wondering about the other questions, really :XBareknuckleRoo wrote:Version 0.106 runs it at full speed for some reason.

Re: STGT'12 Week 3: Salamander 2
it appears the newer mame versions can cope when i play in windowed mode and use like 4/5th of my screen ...
...or swich down my desktop resolution before start playing..
anyone want to confirm that (?)

Re: STGT'12 Week 3: Salamander 2
If you pause at any point while you're recording, that will instantly mess up the replay (cause it to be cut off at the point you paused).
With any version of MAME, the readme recommends you delete the .cfg and NVRAM for the game before you record (and before you playback a .inp), so make sure you're doing that. You can make a .bat file to delete both when you're recording fairly easily (unless there's an even easier method I'm not aware of). If it's still desynching on playback, then it could just be Salamander 2 isn't supported well enough for recording?

I've been using mame to record my plays all the time, it's just this game, however, as stated above, it works in newer versions, and the bad slowdown seems to dissapear if i force a windowresize.. so problem is kinda solved..BareknuckleRoo wrote:If you pause at any point while you're recording, that will instantly mess up the replay (cause it to be cut off at the point you paused).

And the enraging thing is that I lost 2 lives due to some technical problem. At the beginning of the stage, something weird happened and my ship just steered down uncontrollably. Removing focus from the window helped, but I had already died twice, of course...
Concerning the Brain Golem it really is piss easy to kill it once you got it down.
You need two full sized options. Then place yourself quite near to it, next to the middle of the screen, and go down just enough to not get hit by its lower end. Your options should now be deeply sunk into it. Fire constantly and it will die before you need to dodge a single bullet. Make a savestate just when it appears and practice.
Personally, I have much bigger problems reliably setting up the thing about having two options because I am too clumsy to not fly into a bullet at least every second time...
Re: STGT'12 Week 3: Salamander 2
When you get a stuck key input problem, typically you need to tap the key again. Haven't had it happen with MAME though, just FPSes. Alt-Tabbing is often a cause of this, but if it happens within MAME try alt-tabbing out to tap that direction if you can't fix it otherwise.
Also look at the in-game binds to make sure that you only have each input mapped once. Sometimes MAME is set up with lots of buttons for ease of use but most people don't need it.

More people beating my score probably just because of the brain golem. Some of these would beat it without it though.
