there's no gradius in this game except for the powerup bar, which is better than gradius's.
edit: "checkpoints" and "losing your stuff when you die" is not gradius, not even technically
If you have a powerup active on the selection meter, on dying it'll be bumped back to the Speed Up slot. Basically you get a free powerup and nothing else. Just like Gradius!
You're right though, it's really not like Gradius. There are some ideas here and there (uh, the floating continents in stage 2, at a stretch, might seem like maze navigation from a Gradius or Salamander title) but it's standing on its own. The enemy placement (especially those big bouncing things, not to mention floods of popcorn that beg for the laser spread) really reminds me of other Toaplan titles. (This should probably go back to the Strategy talk page on Shmups Chat, though.)
