Grats Ransom, I do suggest figuring out the tough parts of the loop. It's really satisfying to get through the tough parts. The latter part of stage 2 is intense, breaking through the cell wall into the zub rush. And stage 3 requires careful positioning and bullet herding at times. I like the laser a little bit more for stage 3. A very tough and unforgiving loop, but fun, too.

I don't know if I'm going to keep playing it. I'm pretty happy about clearing it in 24 hours from the first time I played it (yes, I seriously hadn't played the arcade version of Gradius before two days ago). I think I'll just be content with the first loop clear and move on to Gradius II (which I know is going to kick my nuts up into my rib cage)... or go back to working on Raiden. CHOICES. =D And thanks for the heads up about limiting my options; I couldn't have finished 1-7 without that!

Thanks Aquas. Yeah the second loop can be tricky and there are way more unexpected deaths due to the suicide bullets. I actually find the hardest part to be the first two levels though, since you have to get off to a good start in 2-1 to power up properly and the section at the end of 2-2 is a bit of a make-or-break moment. I've managed to make it to 3-1 once, but the enemies are slightly faster and I messed up right at the start.

Just a question, but is Vulcan Venture okay if I change the extend setting to Gradius II's extend setting of 30k and every 80k? Or are there other differences between the 2 versions that would make it not an option?

I would like to switch over to playing this on MAME as I don't care for playing it much on PSP. But I can only seem to get the Vulcan Venture one to work and not the Gradius II one.

But I won't be submitting anything for a while anyway as I'll be playing other stuff. Gotta figure out as much of Gokujyuo Parodius as I can for this week.

The most recent version of Gradius II (gradius2.zip) gives extends at 20k and every 150k. You can't replicate this in Vulcan Venture, unfortunately.

Using external autofire is cheatign in NES gradius. HOWEVER....

There's a way to get autofire ingame by wrapping the power meter when your 1000s digit is proper. THis lasts for the rest of your life after you do it.

There's also a way to get a 10k bonus by wrapping the power meter when it's at a different number which i forget. the info was in Nintendo Power.

I definitely want to improve on this run, I just completely underestimated the second loop ha ha.

Does it matter what screen settings are used for the SAT port? Also, is difficulty 3 (normal) equal to the arcade default settings?
Thanks.

Gradius:

chum - 309,600 - 2-2 - MAME

I started playing this today, happy to finally have cleared a Gradius, a series that i find so difficult. Wanted to try to clear the second loop as well, but seeing as how only one person on the score board has done it, maybe not.

A highlight from 1-7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqYpKplt6PQ (Warning: I'm a little loud... just excited and having fun)

NES Gradius II

Is anybody else getting 20+ free lives from one of the later bosses? I think it's some kind of speedkill bonus but it seems weird and out of place.

Is boss milking a legit tactic in this one?

Is it just me or is the boss rush an excellent checkpoint milk? I wouldn't dare to use it because I can't survive the powerup spam consistently.

Pretty sure you checkpoint at the boss you were at after the rush unlike the Gradius III Boss Rush.

Played on Gradius Collection with arcade original settings. I one-missed up to the second loop boss rush, where I lost all my lives to the Zub rush and Gau.
