Funnily enough, the clear I posted above was with the standard wireless controller because I hadn't got a joystick yet. And I used the analog stick at that

I have a joystick now though so no more pad for me. For games with multiple buttons, I really don't like having to use my thumb for all of them. With a standard diamond-shaped 4-button layout on a controller, trying to operate any more than 2 buttons at a time is nearly impossible for me.

However I did watch SuperSoaker360 almost loop Ketsui with a pad not too long ago, which blew my mind.

Using a standard 360 controller myself, but definitely would love to get a quality arcade stick.
I modified a Mayflash Arcade stick with Sanwa parts to use with me PS2 and PC, but still haven't got round to sorting out something for me 360.

I'm not sure having an arcade stick would improve my Deathsmiles scores, but I'd sure like to find out.

I think when they port arcade games to consoles, they make sure the game works well with the standard controllers.
Although saying that, I don't think an analogue stick can give you the same responsive movement you get from a quality micro switched arcade stick.

Use whatever you're comfortable with man, I'm used to a keyboard (flat keys like on a laptop, none of the chunky ones because I feel like it's harder to make quick inputs) and a standard wired Xbox 360 pad. If it makes you feel any better, I have no idea how people play stick.

I made a thread about this a while back when I first started getting into console shmups (at the time, I was transitioning from playing nothing but keyboard controls to playing on a pad). I was very interested in all the feedback after a very close friend of mine actually ended up scoring over 100m on the Japanese 360 version of Raiden Fighters Jet... on a standard wireless Xbox 360 controller's thumbstick.
Anyway, perhaps you could move your discussion there?

Got the Deathsmile Original clear too, with Arcade level restrictions.

Was a bit harder than MBL, Windia is so much weaker in the original. NMNB of Jitterbug was pretty nice though.

It's good to see you're even giving the top Japanese players a run for their money.

I'm thinking about it, but I have a feeling I can get a much higher score than 231bil. Most of that run was messed up anyways with unintended deaths and it's not even an All clear.

Got this game a few months back as my first Cave. Took me a couple months of practice to get Deathsmiles Virtuoso, but did it! I then did it on Score attack mode and am up to 12th on the Leaderboard with a score of 2,884,278,124 All clear Ex on Windia. My highest score playing V.1.1 on play mode was 3.39 billion, but that wasn't even an all clear. I got a score on the MBL 1.1 LB as well that needs to improve Rank #57 34,451,642,456 5-2 boss (Gorge,Ice Palace) Sakura
