Weird. My rom in MAME started going to 5 by default recently. Oh well. Fixed now. The extends are not permanent right?

Thanks, Spadgy! :)

Yeah, since then, not long ago, a little bit before April ended, I actually managed, with some practice, some further improvement in scoring, and looking up techniques in YouTube, to pull off a vastly improved 1cc of Deathsmiles, this time (I did rank 3 on all six stages), w/ one of the "Mystic" extra stages beaten! :D I didn't actually think I'd seriously get this one down before the end of April 30th, but yeah, I managed to pull it off! Here it is, well, the screenshot of it, at least (I have the replay saved, to where I can record that, and put it up on YouTube sometime):

Deathsmiles MBL arranged version 1.1:

PurpleTheGuy - 48,278,017,780 - All EX (Ice Palace) - Sakura

Yeah, I know, the screenshot says PT"X". I got so jittered after that playthrough, that I think I actually clumsily forgot to put in the "G". How clumsy of me, lol. I guess now, I can see, if I can try to get the Canyon Gorge stage down as well, and get that included some time soon in a future playthrough. Also, I really do need to play the other modes more often, I've been putting those off too long now, I must say.

Anyhow, whew, I haven't felt this good, since first beating Mokou and getting that 1st ever "Legendary" (Lunatic) 1cc of PoFV! This is too awesome! What a way to end off April!

This is my highscore in Deathsmiles.

Image

Abandoned Witch (ABT) - 42,659,772 - ALL - Windia - MAME (original version, 2007/10/09)
That is what I've longed for (despite the MAME slowdown in my case).
Apparently the Deathsmiles I and II characters were the children of the former Sedalia members.......
Really. I get my mind into this mindless heart of my own Chronicle, as would let Sarah Hillman said.

Alright, so as I have mentioned earlier, I did try out another mode of Deathsmiles, and this time, I did the Deathsmiles Version 1.1 (360) Arrange mode.

After a few hours of getting used to the slight differences between this mode and the MBL version 1.1 mode, as well as adjusting from using Sakura all the time to using Windia, this 1cc came out! The playthrough was rather messy, and a lot of improvements will be made, no doubt, but it'll do for the 1st real day of playing the Version 1.1 arrange mode. :) Of course, all six stages were done on rank 3.

So, without further ado, I'll post this one up:

Deathsmiles Version 1.1 (360)
PurpleTheGuy - 1,700,365,285 - ALL (No EX) - Windia

Well, looks like I managed to make some improvements on a couple of my runs, so I'll post those two up right now (I apologise for the double post, but I feel more like I'll do a post of this, rather than editing my past posts here) Man, were these runs pretty crazy, especially at the end, whew:

Deathsmiles MBL arranged version 1.1:

PurpleTheGuy - 60,255,345,430 - All EX (Ice Palace) - Sakura
Spoiler

Deathsmiles Version 1.1 (360)

PurpleTheGuy - 2,362,247,235 - ALL (No EX) - Windia

Oh yeah! :D Still got to get the arcade modes down, however, but I'm getting there. Many more improvements can be made for these runs on my part, but for now, this is pretty good. :)

Updated! Nice work people.

Am I right the MAME version is still incomparable to arcade/360 in terms of mixing the score boards?

Nobody playing Deathsmiles at the moment? One of you must have!

EDIT: Turns out there was an update. I'd missed out poor old BRendZ's score from page 20. Sorry mate! Good score too.

Oh, I'll be back, Spadgy, really! I didn't run off or anything, it's just... I've got some old scores of mine I'm going to go settle first concerning some other games, then I'll come back, sooner or later. I know I got some unfinished business with Deathsmiles, indeed!

MBL 360:

CDexWard 409,658,689 ALL (No EX) Sakura 360

It's a poop score but I need to post this to keep me motivated. This was my first clear of any shmup since I returned to playing them after 18 months of not playing at all. And it was a NO MISS run on top of that. :D
Had a couple of bad failed tries last night, though.

Deathsmiles was my first 1cc of a CAVE game, which I got back in November (my goal of getting the 1cc by Halloween unfortunately did not pan out).

Ran in MAME (specifically UME 0.155), with an average speed of 96.64% (so 3.36% slowdown).

Image

Deathsmiles Original version, 2007/10/09
Character: Rosa
Route: C-1 (Rank 3), C-2 (Rank 3), A-1 (Rank 3), B-2 (Rank 1), B-1 (Rank 1), A-2 (Rank 3), Final Stage
Score: 118261504
UME 0.155 input file, if anyone's interested

I just started playing this game (getting into the Halloween spirit?) and was wondering...what "rank" I should choose when I select my stage to have the correct settings that are tracked here?

Game Difficulty should be set to the default, but for the stages pick whatever levels you feel comfortable with.

The Arcade version only let you choose level 1 twice and level 2 twice, but you could pick 3 as much as you wanted and would need to for score. In addition to that, you could only pick level 1 or 2 once for the x-1 and x-2 levels (so if you did Volcano at level 1, which you should never do, always use level 3 Volcano for the extends, you wouldn't be able to level 1 either of the other x-2 levels but could use level 1 for an x-1 if you hadn't used it yet).

Those rules are enforced on Arcade mode, but 360 mode lets you choose 6 level 1s or 6 level 2s if you wanted(And I'm pretty sure even that is accepted here) Optimally, you'd be choosing all level 3 since it's the best scoring, or mixing 3 and 999 for BL. But if you don't like dealing with the suicide bullets, then 2x level 2 4x Level 3 is the way to go while ignoring the extra stage. Picking level 3 five times or going to extra stage will get you death mode 1, doing only Extra stage gets you Death Mode 2 for final stage, and doing both gets you Death Mode 2 for Extra stage and Death Mode 3 for final stage.

For BL, 999 also counts toward Death Mode requirement, and 999 has it active even if you haven't hit 5 stages yet but can be switched off later if you haven't chosen too many 3 or 999 stages yet.

There's no actual reason to choose anything below level 3 outside of avoiding suicide bullets for survival purposes as it'll only hurt your score.

First score in a year and a half?

Haven't been playing very long, but this game seems pretty fun for score. I'll keep working on it. :)

Managed to enter the Ice Palace with ~100k counter this time. Death Mode 3 Castle is really terrifying, though...

Since Spadgy hasn't logged into the forum in months and some of his other high score threads have already been transferred to new stewards, I'll volunteer to take ownership of this one. I'll make a new thread shortly.

It'll take some work to sort everything out, but I want to suggest some improvements for a new thread: split the scores by EX on and off since it makes no sense to combine them, and it would be nice to have separate scoreboards for each character. I think Deathsmiles is popular enough to justify that. It may also be a good idea to track the arcade games in one thread and the console modes in another if you do decide to expand the scoreboards. I dunno.

Thanks for the suggestions! Splitting by EX on/off (at least for vanilla DS) sounds like a great idea. I'd definitely like to split each board by character, too. I'm holding off on making any actual major structural changes to the boards for the moment while I wait for feedback, so if anyone else has any requests for changes they'd like to see made, please share them!

This thread isn't being updated anymore; the latest version is here: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=58071

Also, Deathsmiles Rosa non-EX is a very popular category as you might imagine, so the bar to make that particular table currently sits at around 103m. Good job nonetheless! :)
