I'll jump in. Haven't played too much of this game, but I just got it for Saturn, so it's time. Pretty fun. All I knew of this game was that it was inspiration for Yagawa to create Garegga. How many stages are there in this game?

Ed Oscuro - 78,120 - 3 - 1P - EAH - MAME Plus 0.130u2r4145-20090329

Autofire on, setting of 4

I was getting ready to start playing this game the day before this thread showed up - nice coincidence. I'm starting to get the hang of it - the powerup drop ships always used to cause my trouble, but aside from the first group (which I use a bomb on) I can usually get them all pretty easily.

Rather poor and primitive game, but here it is....

7 stages. The stage 2 theme plays for stage 5 and 6.

The 2nd stage BGM is the best thing in the whole game. :)

Practice (i.e. from a savestate):

Ed Oscuro - 139,130 - 3 - 1P - EAH - MAME Plus 0.130u2r4145-20090329
Autofire setting 4 again.

Got this from forcing a no-bomb run from a savestate at the beginning of level 2 (the buzzy blue airships). Argh, trying to do a max points run of this game would be somewhat nightmarish, since you have to wait for every little ship and thing to be released, shoot off all wings before hitting the fuselage, et.c

And of course the bulk of the score, aside from just shooting shit, seems to be in the no bomb bonus, if this current score is any indication.

Well, I kinda 1CC'd it - i got to the last boss and missed the four shots and just suicided, so I ended without passing the game, but also had something like 9 lives in reserve! (had 9 lives before the last stage, got some crazy 200+K bonus for lives) Weird. What am I supposed to do with the four bullets? Shoot him when the shield stops moving?

drboom - 839,630 - ???(end boss) - 1p - drb - Saturn

EDIT: Went back and played another credit and took that sucker out. I guess all you need to do is hit him once with one of the four shots.

drboom - 892,750 - ALL - 1p - drb - Saturn

One question about this: Isn't the Saturn version of Gun Frontier meant to be easier than the arcade? The second extend is definitely different

It has to be. I never scored that well on the arcade version.

Arcade extend settings are +1 at 20K, and then +1 at every 80K after (100K, 180K, 260K, etc).

Whether the Saturn version is truly easier is something that could be researched.

I heard or read somewhere that the rapid fire in the Saturn version does make the game easier.

I missed 20k. (didn't get one of the ships during a couple phases of my checkpoint milking)

Garegga owes more to Zanac than this piece of shit.

Also, Saturn version has a different rank system (survival time, instead of shots missed.) It should be on a separate table for this reason.
so long and tanks for all the spacefish

<Megalixir> now that i know garegga is faggot central i can disregard it entirely

Autofire setting 4 again.

Got through a bunch of stuff I didn't see before in Stage 3, but died at the circle planes rush. If I just sat there and autofired at em I probably could've made it. Pretty darn good play until the second half of the third stage, although I panic-bombed the second boss because I was letting the small ships paint me into a corner.

One thing about the game is bugging me - are parts of the scenery supposed to jiggle around like that? Look at some big thing on the ground (like the fire left from one of the big tanks at the first stage) when moving back and forth. Also, collision detection seems off at times. Doesn't help that the ship is super slow.

Could have gotten 620k, but I suicided a millisecond too late.

Ladies and gentlemen, the extremely retarded checkpoint milking trick.

Oops the extends are the same after all, when i read your initial post i thought it said the second extend was at 80k

Is the version of Gun Frontier thats on Taito Legends 2 acceptable for this thread? If so I'll post a score asap
