Yes, seriously. In one of my credits I lost seven lives in 2-2.
The loop requires the maximum bomb bonus for survival as well, otherwise you'll be blowing through bombs and lives rather quickly.

At some point I was going to practice enough so I could reach 2nd loop, but now I don't have the slightest interest anymore

Yeah, your score resets as well (so no infinite scoring abuse). Now I know why it's called progear.

Is "fixed gunner" allowed? I was playing around with that, though I don't really see a difference. I'll try again if it's cheating.

It was more than that, actually, but since I can't break that whatever the lowest high score is, I have to take periodic screencaps that, in taking them, ruin my game and make me lose

Surrender is a good idea.
I like the soundtrack in RFJ better in mame, because when you use save states the soundtrack is new all the time.

In my experience your score doesn't reset. But the gem loss is so much it's not beneficial to try and milk the stage as you'll never make the points back.

I'd like to know as well, as I'm playing with fixed (press both buttons at gunner select) mode too.

Oh and yeah, I'm still having trouble to reach the first extend

I'm too anal with bombs.
